Loving this show, though I'm a bit bewildered by the Saxons' appearance.

Did they purposely choose skinny, under-developed ectomorphs with hardly a shade of stubble on their faces? For crying out loud, I have a deskjob, eat too unhealthy and spend way too little time exercising and I have 20 pounds of muscle (and about 40 pounds in general) on them. It makes the Viking victory rather meh, even considering they were outnumbered.
It seems to be a rather silly trope to use muscular paragons of testosterone for one side and portray the others as wimpy, emasculated and ineffective peasants; in such a fairly down to earth series.

Maybe they were just a levy, or an unseasoned troop of fresh recruits, but then their equipment doesn't make sense from what little I know of the period.

Every Viking raider was a warrior. Most of the saxon fighting force was composed of the fyrd, which is all men capable of bearing arms. Not owning arms or proficient of their usage, but capable of bearing arms.
P.S. You cannot compare the average person of the Dark age with a modern person. You eat enough, are disease- and parasite-free. This alone gives you an advantage over them. The Norsemen enjoyed a better diet, out of necessity(grain does not grow on rocks) and they were better warriors due to their culture.

Northumbria had been significantly weakened, though not conquered, in wars with Mercia and the Picts around this time, or a few years prior to the Viking landings. I think it's reasonable to assume they might have had an abundance of good equipment but few skilled soldiers to use it. Whether the producers tried to show this I have no idea, but showing young inexperienced troops as part of a local militia is probably pretty accurate.

I guess explanations like that make sense, or could make sense historically. But I doubt it's why the actual casting agents went for the physical disparity.

Anyway, it's a fairly minor point and I'm not going to let it ruin the show for me.

So wasn't it possible to simply challenge the "Earl" to a fight and bash his skull in front of the whole viking town ? I thought they had such "customs" back than.

Man I want to see this, but it's not shown on history in Belgium as far as I know.

Judging from what you guys are saying, I'm buying this on blu ray as soon as it comes out

EDIT: You can watch it on the website of History, this show is the best thing my eyes laid sight on since HBO's Rome!

If History makes more of this I might not cancel my subscription after all

aw damnit, been enjoying the web releases. Getting a new ep a week ahead was great, but as of this AM no ep 5.

It was/is only going to be episodes 1-4 released early. I am glad, because I was getting tired of a friend badgering me about wanting to wait weekly.


Anyway, finally caught up. Glad that there is a chance for more. It is a great show.

I like it this way. Means I don't have to avoid the internet until I get around to watching it online or actually watch it when it airs...I'm getting really tired of getting online and people posting spoilers all over the damn place...It used to be I had to only avoid IMDB and Youtube...Now I can't even avoid them on Facebook or Yahoo...
