How did the Greytstarks sneak past the Twins?

"That's quite all right, I'm sure my future brother in law bears me no ill will."
Doubt began to gnaw at Alfred nonetheless. They had been expecting Greystark for almost a year.

The aide bowed before leaving Lord Frey, and rushed towards the main gate of the castle to tell Ulfric it was safe to allow the Greystarks into the castle.

Far indeed! I felt as if I could use a bit of fresh southern air. I grew up south of the Neck and I miss it sometimes. My brother is also at Kings Landing handling things so it fell unto me to find some new trade partners! Which also attests to my purpose here.

Rhalion approached the gate smiling. When he seen his friends face upon approaching he was only slightly put on guard, then decided that's what the men around him were for. Rhalion was a smart young man, with the deep voice of his father, but hearty. Though he is quite aware of battle and loss, the thought of it does not daunt him the way it does other men. He is indeed blissfully ignorant to what dangers court held. He was his fathers son, and held little truth back in conversation. Something that he may regret one day.

He smiled, and bowed his head politely.

Lord Lefford. I have come to the magnificent castle that is the golden tooth to put a few affairs in order.

Ulfric stood up from his sword and half turned to his men as he heard the aide excusing his way through the guard. The aide said a few words to Ulfric before being sent off with a nod. Ulfric turned back to the Greystark lord.

"My Lord is currently speaking with a Lannister envoy about Westerlands affairs and thus cannot immediately see you, my Lord. You and your party are welcome to some refreshments while you wait: your horses will be tended to in the stables."

Ulfric waved the guard aside and shouted to open the gates. The assembled troops shuffled to either side of the road as the doors swung open with loud creaks. Ulfric walked ahead of the Greystark party as they moved through the archway, followed by the throng of castle guards who returned to their duties or, in many cases, their beds: Ulfric had roused the off-duty guardsmen to ensure he had enough manpower to win a fight if it came to it. As they entered the Courtyard the Frey party were already mounted and leaving the stables, while the Lannister retainers observed the new arrivals through the windows of the guardhouse where they were being fed.

"By all means, Tygett, what news do you bring?" Harmund replied, hoping he might be able to glean more information about this murder investigation. Ulfric quietly re-entered the Great Hall, taking up his previous position next to the door by one of the guards. He gave Harmund a nod to signal everything had been taken care of.

Rhalion continued to smile, Take your time! It was a long ride I'm sure we can wait a bit longer. Those refreshments however would be most welcome. My men have done a fine job protecting me on the way and deserve it. And your name Ser? I am the younger brother to Lord Kilgore Greystark, Rhalion. I say this because although my fathers name may have been well known around the Kingdoms, few enough know who his heir is, let alone his second son.

Rhalion said while on the way through the arches. His eyes wandered around once they passed through the gate.
Well that was a diplomatic enough meeting. My skins crawling... They seem pleasant enough, though clearly veiled. Are those Frey colors over there?

"Ser Ulfric, in command of Lord Lefford's guard, my Lord." replied Ulfric as he escorted the party through the castle grounds,"Your horseman introduced you at the gate as you approached."

The party dismounted and had their horses taken to the stables for water while the men were taken into the guardhouse for some food and wine. Rhalion was taken into the keep where he was shown to a small annex down the corridor from the Great Hall: a fire burned in the hearth and there were couches nearby. A modest table with several chairs sat at the side of the room by a large window overlooking the valley below.

"If you would like to wait here, my Lord, while I have a servant bring you some food and good wine," said Ulfric as he opened the door before Rhalion, "I will return for you as soon as Lord Lefford has concluded his business with the Lannister envoy."

Ulfric departed the Lord's company and returned to the Great Hall. A servant arrived a few minutes later with some wine and a silver plate of cold meats, fruits and cheese for Lord Rhalion, before excusing herself and leaving Rhalion alone in the annex.

[ooc: unsure if you intended anything with the Freys, feel free to rewind time a bit into the Courtyard if you fancy, or bring more people to the annex]

OOC- I got this broseph lol

Rhalion turned too the servants and asked politely, Please, and they know better, no wine for them. Or ale, they will drink simple water.

Rhalion said just before being escorted away. Many of the men groaned but joked as well.
As he was being seated, Rhalion was grateful for food.
Thank you Ser Ulfric, your courtesy is appreciated. I do have need however of water, not wine. Also, if you would, the Lannisters are friends of my house, if you could please pay my respect to the envoy that he may communicate them to his Lord

OOC- ill let Sev decide if my guy gets out there in time to speak with him

As the Freys were making their way out the gate, Alfred ordered for them to halt.

"There, I espy Greystark banners. Let us greet them before continuing homeward."

The group set off at a trot and cantered in front of the Greystark party as they made their way into Goldentooth

"Well this is a surprise, I suppose with Lord Waldo's movements south the Twins have opened the floodgates of the King's Road! Greetings, my friends."

Tygett paced as he spoke, thinking deeply.

Well, firstly, my father has commanded me to raise the levies of the west. Before I issue such a command, I wish to know if your men are prepared for such a thing.

Harmund worried where this conversation would go, but kept up his friendly demenour. Raymar, who had been listening with mild boredom up to this point, perked up when talk of a mobilisation started.

"The arms of House Lefford are ever ready for the call, Tygett. You need only give the word and I will have my host gathered at this fortress with all haste, and I can be ready to march in a matter of days. To where do we march, if I may ask? It was my understanding that the invasion of Cracklaw would be met by the hosts of the Crownlands, or perhaps the Riverlands and Vale. Surely they do not call on Westerlands arms?" probed Harmund, worried that the mobilisation could be for darker purposes, but confident that his well-known love of military sciences would ensure the question seemed natural coming from a man like himself.

He sighed, looking down at the floor before back up at his host.

Alas, the regent has seen fit to call our entire levy to act as a reserve against these eastern fools. 100,000 men... Wasted on guard duty. A sham, of course, but we cannot refuse the orders of The King.

Harmund considered the statement. It was true that maintaining a strategic reserve was sensible, and the King would know that, but it seemed unnecessarily costly to have it mobilised in the field when the hosts of the Crownlands, Vale and Riverlands were all mighty in their own right: just how large was this Essosi invasion? Perhaps it was far larger than Harmund realised.

"It is settled then, the Levy will be raised." said Harmund to Tygett, before shouting over a scribe and pressing his seal onto a parchment after the order had been written, "The arms of Golden Tooth will be ready for war in 2 or 3 days, Lord Tygett. The vast majority of my subjects live in or near the town below the castle, making mobilisation relatively swift. Shall I march anywhere or await instructions with my forces?"

He chuckled, evidently pleased with the efficiency of lord Lefford.

Awaiting instructions is all that is to be required. Until the order is given, making sure your levies are ready to march is all that is required.

Harmund nodded his agreement, "They shall be ready, Lord Tygett. I will await word from House Lannister."

By now the castle had burst into activity: scribes were copying the mobilisation order and aides were rushing finished copies to the raven tower for transportation to all the towns and villages in the valley. Below, in the valley, town bells could be heard ringing as riders from the castle arrived in the town square calling for all the men-at-arms to report to the muster field outside the town for war. The store rooms of the castle were alive with guards, men-at-arms and organisational personnel loading wagons with tents and war equipment for transport to the mustering point. Over the coming 3 days columns of men from up and down the valley would join the ever growing army outside the town's small western wall.

The inns and whorehouses of Goldentooth Town made their average yearly incomes in a week. Young soldiers taking their pleasures in case they never came back, old soldiers drinking with old friends from past campaigns, and nobility young and old filling up the warm inn bedchambers, staving off sleeping in the tents for as long as they could. Mine owners could be heard voicing their complaints as the town blacksmiths produced swords, polearms and arrowheads to equip the throngs of soldiers, and the shrines donation boxes overflowed with superstitious men hoping a few coins to the Gods would preserve them in the coming campaign.

[ooc: assuming Gandalf's done with me, then]

Harmund rose from his seat in the Great Hall and proceeded down the corridor to the room where Lord Rhalion had been seated. Ulfric, close behind, waited outside the door while Harmund joined Rhalion at the table where he'd finished his meal and was enjoying the view while drinking his water. After pouring himself some wine from the untouched jug, he spoke.

"My apologies, Lord Greystark. I had important business with the Lannisters: it appears the King has ordered the Westerlands armies into the field to act as a reserve against the Essosi invasion. The castle is making ready for this as we speak," he said, referring to the commotion clearly audible outside the room, "What can I do for you?"

[ooc: Ah, my apologies. Well, Harmund has ordered the mobilisation as Tygett requested, so if Tygett has any further reason for being here then you can proceed with that. I'll delete my post to Rhalion if Tygett has more to say.]

    OOC: it's fine, continue

IC: Tygett stays for a day or two to witness the mobilisation, before leaving for Casterly rock, satisfied.

Surprise indeed! How do you fare Lord Alfred! Rhalion said pleasantly surprised by their presence. To Rhalion it only meant one thing, there was lessbconflict of interest long term in regards to trade.
