Nikitin hotels have mixer taps in this country as a rule. I say this as someone who used to travel the country and stayed in my fair share of depressingly familiar hotel rooms.

Check that out, Premier Inn, the biggest chain in the UK and look at the tour. Mixer taps on the sink, mixer taps on the bath. Furthermore I'm amazed you think people would care enough to carry one in a suitcase. I'm not intentionally trying to put a downer on it, well I guess I am but trying to do it nicely so those words are intended to soften this unsuccessfully I suspect: man that is a terribly founded idea based on a misconception that A. People care that much about taps and B. That the UK doesn't use them and people would care so much as presented in A as to carry an appliance around.

I prefer the double tap system, though I've used both.

It's not a serious idea aimed at producing a product, but just a simple assignment we have 2 do. We actually thought of the idea because 2 people in our group have been in England, and both were greatly annoyed at the double-sinks when they were staying at the hotel. Thanks 4 the input, though.

PS: Don't worry, I am glad for any relevant criticism (like that most English hotels use mixed taps). No offence is taken whatsoever.

Installing serious taps isn't a problem compared to having something stick to existing taps. My curiosity was rather because I wanted to see if it was a technical project or just to evaluate different customer "needs".

Carrying a tap mixer would probably be a lot more work than just washing your hands in cold water like I do in England .

Reminds me a bit of a business case for "ethical porn" we discussed at a business development course.

To do this though, we need to know what other people think of our idea (this is where you come in).

In Norway we almost exclusively use mixed taps. However, in the UK double-taps (one for cold and one for warm water) are used. To us it seems unnecessarily difficult, so we thought maybe the UK has a large market for a simple device which connects the two taps into one and mixes the warm and cold water, thus cheaply & easily making it possible to wash ones hands in a comfortable temperature. So in that case, could you please take the time to answer 3 questions?

    1) Are you Brits comfortable with your double-tap system?

    2) Would you consider buying our device if it was released on the market?

    3) Are there any obvious problems with our idea? The only problem we see is that most UK people can afford to install a mixed-tap system.

PS: Moderators: I thought since this was a technology-thread I could post it here, but feel free to move it if you absolutely think this is the wrong place.
Do yourself a favour, abandon this project immediately and stop wasting your time. You clearly haven't done your research at all: mixed taps are already available in the UK, many of us already have them: almost all modern bathrooms have mixed taps and any self-respecting quality hotel or restaurant does too. Its not like we've never heard of them, the only reason we don't all have them by now is because we don't have the money.

Besides there are plenty of advantages: drinking water is always going to be better coming from a cold tap, in a mixed tap you'd have to run the tap for ages to flush out the warm water in the pipes. It's perfectly easy to regulate the temperature with two taps if you want to splash some water on your face: you just cup your hands, and take half hot water and half cold water, and voila. Plus it saves on electricity bills, since I doubt mixed taps are very energy efficient.

In fact the only reasoning you are using seems to be that 'foreigners don't like the British system'. Why would we care about what foreigners think? If someone was actually doing this they would be laughed out of the country, a foreign company coming along and saying 'we don't like your country's way of doing things, so do it our way instead'. Britain was the world's largest ever empire, do you seriously think we are so stupid as to sit here using something which annoys us every day of our lives and not thinking to change it?

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

    Great thread!

It's got my thinking, and I can't remember the last time I lived somewhere with seperate hot/cold taps. I think the last place I lived in that didn't have mixed taps was in 1992, and that was a large Victorian terraced house in central London.... (and yes I weep when I think what it's worth now versus what my parents sold it for).

Circa how many British sinks actually use mixed taps? Can somebody answer this question? In our group two people were on vacation there, and both were faced with frustrating and inpractical double-taps at the hotels they were staying. From the internet, we also got the impression that a large part of British sinks use the double-tap.

In case you didn't read the OP, we are doing this for our university assignment (obviously we won't start a company on this basis).

No, not unless they use a weird pressure in the UK. It takes approximately 3 seconds to flush out the warm water here. And even then, there is nothing wrong with drinking warm water - it's just heated drinking-water. Bacteria cannot develop in the water anyway due to too short time and presence of disinfectants like chloride.

Well, since new buildings are still built with the inferior double-tap system, yeah. It's primarily a matter of tradition, I guess.

Were your friends staying in youth hostels? I would have thought that most hotels would have mixer taps, certainly the cheap national chains.

I can't even remember what the taps are like in my sink so it obviously doesn't worry me that much.

USA is like you probably know the white blob below Canada, is it not even remotely the size of the British Empire.

USA is more consolidated and benefits from the fact that we nowadays can travel around the world in a single day. But the British Empire is the largest empire in history

It was Copperknicker II’s fault for saying this:

After that any response is fair game.
I never knew the Individual with the Metallic Undergarments the Second was a militant nationalist before. Surprising.

You've got to watch Sphere like a hawk for this kind of stuff. I watch him all the time, even when he doesn't know I am there.
