Default Hey, I'd like to Help

I'd like to help if you guys are in need of anything. I am very much interested in learning how to code for Medieval 2 Total War and would do anything that you guys asked of me. I have no modding experience but maybe I can contribute in some other way or maybe even learn a little from you guys please let me know if there is anything I can do for the mod and the community

And so it's a sad fact of life, that the majority of baby threads never reach adulthood in this harsh and unforgiving world.

Let's watch, in silence and respect for mother nature, how this baby thread is preyed upon by a hungry moderator.

Edit: Sorry Imperator, I've been watching too many animal documentaries

If you can help me on any of the three subjects stated in this thread, I'll give you a cookie.

Of course, that is only if research is your thing. If so, and you prove yourself very useful, who knows, you might get promoted. After all, I got myself from map research applicant to head of research in a month or so. It all comes down to how much dedication you show. I'm not cracking down upon you (while I might do on others with the same question, as Raven mentions) because the way you formulate your request: "anything I can do for the mod and the community", which tells you might well be a dedicated fellow. If you're interested, then good luck with the research.

Hey Landil, I appreciate the quick response. I would prefer doing something on the modding side simply because I have never done any historical research and quite frankly wouldn't really know where or how to start. That being said, if that is all that DOTS needs at the moment I am up for giving it a try. Perhaps you could give me a few pointers on how to get my research going, I am sure that once I have a good start one thing will lead to another and I will get you the information you require quite easily.

Sorry, I'd prefer to do research on the Holy Roman Empire or Italy if possible

If you want you can also do research on regions other than the HRE, Italy or Spain. For example, you might know more about your own country and if your native language is one other than Dutch, English or German you will be able to read things that I can't (easily) read. If you still stick to either the HRE or Italy, I would prefer if you work on Italy, because I already have someone working on the HRE.

    As for advise:
    • Follow the guidelines that I give in the first post of the research threads, this will make sure you don't give redundant information.
    • As for what research looks like, see this post (that I made before I joined the team) for an example of how I work.
    • When doing map research, try doing it region by region. For example, you research Tuscany: you first survey the entire region, you make sure you know what towns and fortresses existed there in the Middle Ages, from big cities to small castles. Then, this phase of 'broad' research done, you go indepth: you look into the political, economic and cultural importance of each of those places you have found to have existed back then, and rank them by it. You then send your findings to me, as detailed as possible.

This may seem like a daunting task, and indeed to some extent it is, but if you truly are dedicated (and you have the necessary time) then you can do it. Indeed, I myself have reviewed whole regions in a matter of one or two days of persistent study, though as a historical demographer I have the knowledge and experience necessary to pull that of. It doesn't matter if you do it in a slower pace, nor if you make mistakes. I will review everything you've researched anyway, but if you've done your work well, it will save me a lot of time.

I am sorry but with school and everything there is no way I would have the time to do research that in-depth. I'm sorry Landil, but if that is your standard for research then I can honestly say that I will not meet it at this time.

That is the depth of research I advise you to do, not necessarily demand of you. In fact, I'm currently in the same position: I don't have the time required to do the research I want. But any small bit of research is welcome, as I say in each of the opening posts of the research threads: "And remember: anything is useful, no matter how little it is!" For example, you could just do some research on a single city and post the results, then move on to another city whenever you have the time for it. Of course, it's all your choice.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't miss that opportunity.

Ah the time I spend on crap like this... the mod could be out by now XD

Okay, okay! I'm going back to work on the bloody mod....

    But like Landil said:
We are always in need of talented individuals, or fools and buffons like myself who have ample time to spend on the mod.

Remember: small trickles of water turn into an ocean.
That is one of our key policies when we hire the inexpensive child labourers we have working on the code - the more sweat and tears they put into the mod, the better the experience!

Do you have positions available for those with no modding ability or any amount of useful historical knowledge?

Yes, if you're willing to do some hard work to obtain and share useful historical knowledge!

Indeed! Doing research for the mod does not require having any knowledge on the subject prior to it (though it is an obvious bonus). The only thing that is truly required is dedication.

To be honest, it is quite a letdown (though not totally unexpected) that there has been so little response to my request for help with the historical research. While of course I would love to see more people that are able to sink loads of time and energy into this like I myself have done, I realise that those people are a rare occurance. That is why I have stated time and time again that I don't mind how small the contributions are, as long as they follow the guidelines set for them, so that they are useful to me.

So if you are willing to contribute, please go ahead and remember to do it at whatever pace you like!

I remember you used to have a large spreadsheet full of characters and items ect that anyone with a spare hour or two could contribute to. Is there anything like that still going because my free time will basically just be the odd hour here and there and I don't want to have anyone relying on me to get something in when I don't manage to?

As far as I know, most of that has been finished (though I'm not entirely sure). The PSF research is one of the biggest obstacles remaining and one of the few that you or anyone else can readily help with, especially because I will most likely not have the time to properly work on it for the next few months because I unfortunately must set my priorities elsewhere (i.e. not on DotS). So you don't need to be concerned about having to meet any deadlines or other demands from me, as there won't be any for quite a while. As I said in my previous post: you can do it at any pace you like. If you need my help to get started, or anywhere along the road for that matter, I will be there (it's not like I won't involve myself with DotS at all, I'm simply on an official hiatus at the moment to focus on other things).

Hey man, sorry about that, I had two midterms and a paper due...last weeks been hell for me. I will certainly consider the option, I would very much like to contribute to the mod and it is certainly attractive of an offer considering I can do so at my own pace. If that is still the case, let me know and I will try and get started
