Henry looked at the old man strangly, he wasnt the person he was expecting.

"The Archbishop wishes to see Lord Carlisle urgently... However I see he isnt here. Could you be so kind as to tell him this message when he arrives? And do you know when he will be back?"

    Lord Carlisle... yes...

The steward's mind was obviously elsewhere, the man barely even noticed when a messenger entered and pulled on his sleeve.

Walter, the baron has returned with the Wardens, he is coming from the stables now to speak with you.

Roger was excited to get back after the years away in the borderlands, but he was curious as to what had caught Carlisle's attention. Leaving the horses to the stable boys, he followed the Baron.

Henry was rather excited to talk to Lord Carlisle rather than this old man. However he felt somewhat intimidated by the sudden influx of people.

"My Lord, the Archbishop requires your presence urgently. We can go to see him whenever you are ready."

Halting in his tracks, Carlisle turned to Henry.

    The Archbishop of Canterbury?

Beside Roger, Walter collapsed onto the cold stone floor...

Dazed and confused, Walter struggled to focus upon Roger.

    Roger, my boy...

His voice came out as a croak, every word a strain.

    What's wrong Walter?
He knew that was a stupid question but he did not know what else to say.
    Fetch a priest!
    He yelled.

Walter spluttered and rasped a reply.

    I am old.

Carlisle went to his knees beside his mentor who now clutched at him.

    Richard, the girl...

Before Henry could reply many were around Walter.

"Is there anything I do? The priest! I will go!"

Henry sprinted from the room, even though Henry did not know Walter, he knew that Carlisle and Roger were fond of him so he wanted to help.

Carlisle frowned at the steward's words but bade him to continue.

    She's de Taillebois'.

Walter's words were barely discernable now.

    His bastard... I taught her...

By an incredible stroke of luck, Henry found a priest almost immediately. The father had been visiting with a relative and was now on his way home.

The priest seemed almost reluctant to do anything but Henry ushered him to Walter. Henry feared the worst for the old man.

    "Is he.... You know..."

That was Henry's only question when he saw Walter lying on the floor, barely managing to get his words out.

Carlisle raised a hand for quiet.

With all respect to the father, I do not think that it is his time yet.

Standing, the baron addressed the servants in the hall.

Carry him to his rooms, make him comfortable, give him all he needs and see that he is attended by men who will know how to treat him.

As his orders were carried out, Carlisle looked on sadly before returning his attention to Henry.

Henry felt awkward standing there with all that just happened.

"...I am sorry to have arrived at such time but the Archbishop of Canterbury requests you see him straight away. We could go now... Or whenever suits you. I am sure he will understand if we are late."

The baron ran a hand through his hair. He had returned to Carlisle to govern and now he was being called elsewhere. Knowing that Walter would not be able to advise him, the baron turned to Roger to see if he had anything to say before offering his own opinion.

Did the Archbishop give a reason? I am loathe to leave here again so soon, though I have some desire to speak with the Archbishop and am happy to offer him an invitation to come here if he will. I understand the south is a dangerous place recently.

"He did not. However I am happy to send him an invitation to come here instead. The south is very dangerous. I will take my leave..."

Henry headed out, ready for the long journey south again after a rather unfortunate visit.

His hands behind his head, Carlisle sighed as he watched the man go.

I wonder what the Archbishop wants with me...

Maybe there'll be a new Saint Richard by the end of the year?

Carlisle stared blankly in reply, he was not amused.

How is your hand, Roger? Can you write well enough to appease an Archbishop?
