They are met by a young boy in browns and greys. He introduces himself as a squire to Lord Carlisle and requests that the de Clares follow him. It is a warm day and the group work up a sweat as they trek through the grasslands, up a fell and down the other side before a vast a pleasant lake where a man can be see taking his ease in a makeshift shelter of furs and leather, looking out across the lake, a small fire pit by his side containing still glowing embers.

OOC: Quick historical blurb, the de Clares were a bastard line of the Norman dukes and were present at hastings and were earls afte the conquest but lead a revolt after William died, this is sorta common knowledge amongst the nobility in England

Richard de Clare walks up and says

Always nice to see a Lord who isnt made soft by the finer things in life. I am Richard de Clare, at your service sir

OOC: Always like a quick historical blurb What age is your character? You should probably put it in the registration.
    IC:

Carlisle grunted and shielded his eyes as de Clare approached.

I am Carlisle, though I guess that you knew that...

He rubbed at a bite on his neck and gestured for the man to sit by the fire.

OOC: early to mid 30's, was in his late teens when his family was exiled and was a mercenary captain most of his adult life

    The Norman nods

Well met, I am Richard de Clare, newly minted Baron of Rouen, god bless our new king.

The Baron takes a seat and says

I have heard of your reputation Carlisle and have wanted to meet you. Always nice to have fresh blood in the nobility.

Also, I am curious about these celts here in England. My father had a dream of carving out our own domain in Ireland and Scotland like William did with England. Given what you have done with these northerns, it would seem you would be the foremost expert in these matters in the realm

That's twice you've introduced yourself. I will remember that name.

Carlisle did not like being talked to directly. he understood that was the way of things with other people but perhaps they could do it a little less...

They are a savage people mostly. Slow to learn anything other than at the point of a sword.

    de clare nods and observes

A man of action not words, cant say that would apply to myself, but I respect that

    de Clare laughs and says

I bet I could do most of the talking for the both of us. At least we dont sound like the Germans or some of the other foreigners I have lived with

Know on to the issue of the celts, what kind of government do they keep, would there be titles we can claim.

And what is the political situation with the Scots, could they threaten our realm, is their differences amognst them that could be exploited, perhaps you think we could take the lowlands.

And what do you think of our new king and the fighting with the Heathen in the Holy land

De clare then streches and gives de Lacquartier a wolfish grin and says

Why so glum my brother lord. We are young, Normans, and Barons and there is a whole world out their for the taking.

OOC: Would be safe to say our chars have different personalities and styles

Carlisle stifled a groan as this verbal barrage washed over him. Reaching behind him he pulled a leg of mutton from a leather sack and placed it carefully on the embers. Normally he would only ever prepare food for his friends, but perhaps having his mouth full would shut this man up a bit.

The Scots are no threat currently, though if you plan to take them on yourself... I only ask that you do not journey there from Cumberland.

    de clare smiles and says

Scotland is a bit to much now, I may be an ambitious man but im not crazy. And our king has currently stationed me in Normandy to keep an eye on the franks in case they get any ideas about Mr. Archers legitimacy. So it will be awhile before I can return to the north to annoy you.

the Norman looks over at the recurve bow sitting in the corner of the shed and motions to it and says

I take it you shoot much, interesting bow you got there. I only saw another one like it used by the saracen in Sicily. Deadly effective at close range, I would be willing to pay good money to have you teach some of my craftsmen to make them here up north. Or perhaps I can teach some of your men in the ways of the horse and we can have mounted archers like the Magyars and people of the east

    No, thank you...

This man seemed more a salesman than a Baron, but then again Richard doubted that he appeared much of a Baron either.

I cannot make something such as that bow.

ooc: See OP. I'm going to say that this is at Carlisle for now.

William meets with Walter Fitzwilliam - elderly former tutor of the Baron and custodian of Carlisle Castle - who asks him his name and purpose.

Of course, good sir. I am sir William de Vassy, and I am here on semi- royal business.

Not strictly royal, per se, but I have been asked by the king to... Measure the worth of his nobles.

No, good sir. I thank you for your hospitality.
