Would it be possible to withhold from creating a character until we get our ranks? After all, it would be rather odd if I was selected the King, and my character was a tiny little Parish priest
"Only Connect!...Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer."
yeah, of course it is. I'm going to do such.
Quick question - Are Clergy allowed to have heirs and children ?. Or are they not allowed to have any ?. Because I am thinking of creating a Clergy family so of course they would need to have kids and a wife or something lol. Either way are clergy allowed to have estates and families ?
yeah they are allowed.
Though frowned upon and generally considered illegal, relationships with women and raising families were somewhat common among the clergy around this time. It wasn't officially declared illegal until the First Lateran Council of 1123. Even then there were no actual punishment laid out for any clergymen who decided to go ahead and do it anyway until the Second Lateran Council of 1139 where the punishment was pretty much excommunication. I have a feeling that those who already had families were given one year to choose between them or the church before being excommunicated.
You are allowed to do what you wish in game. However, clergymen strictly should abstain from sex, so if you want to not be persecuted/face whatever action the higher up clergy want to take, keep it hush hush. Though the lower down you are, the less likely others are to care. It was quite common for village priests to have wives and families, as the bishop would not likely know, and if he did he probably would have bigger problems. If you're a bishop who fathers some children, it would probably lessen your reputation as a holy man if people knew, but then again that may be the image you want to cultivate for yourself.
Not sure about the estates bit, but before, we ended up deciding no, so there's a differentiation between the clergy and noble ranks (i.e. be a noble to hold land and have armies, or be a clergyman to have the powers that they hold, political offices with the king and more money to finance others if you wish so). That's the way I believe it should stay.
Bitter is the wind tonight,
it stirs up the white-waved sea.
I do not fear the coursing of the Irish sea
by the fierce warriors of Lothlind.
I think I'll try out the game. And who is included in the lottery?
anyone who posts in the game start thread
When will the game start?
