This is amazing!! I was waiting soo long to see this preview and it is really worthy seeing. Germans/Franks are probably going to be one of my favourite factions in TGC.
Western heavy cavlry/knights of this era belong to my most favourite military units ever but are not they suppose to throw their spears in battle instead of charging headlong into the enemy? IIRC, knightly charge with lances started to be commonly used only in the end of the XI. century.
I am also curious about the hats of the leavies. Were they so commonly used? Why they are all white?
Thanks for your answers, looking forward to the game
Btw. Picture of Domini ac Defensores is not showing for me.

Oh yes, they are they are straw hats and they are very detailed indeed. I did not mean to offend or disregard them I am just currious whether the straw hats were so frequently used by the german peasants in this period and wheter we have some sources supporting that.
I just failed to formulate my question properly because I was in hurry and did not know how to say straw in English

There is an infamous episode in Widukind's Res Gestae Saxonicae (3,2), in which Otto's soldiers almost universally take up straw hats. The exact meaning of this episode is subject to much debate especially since there are conflicting manuscripts, but it seems this was to mock the enemy by using peasantry headdress, as if to say Otto does not even need soldiers or helmets to defeat him.
The whole story is very difficult to understand nowadays, but I thought giving the peasants strawhats was a nice nod to it.

The Swabians finest hour was the last stand in the Battle of Civitate.
Some people believe that they were armed with earliest examples of two handed swords. Of course It is nonsense, probably mistake was made due to translation (long sword doesn't mean 2 handed).
Regarding Lechfeld: were there 8 000 Loricati + infantry or whole German army was ~8000 men including both infantry and Loricati? In most European armies heavy cavalry was minority comparing to infantry, do you have any info about such proportion in Lechfeld battle?
Great preview, as usually Which will be next? Pechengs?

Thank you for your kind words.
Both Turcomanic and Pecheneg rosters are done.
For pechenegs we will need some historical researcher to make preview texts like the one we read here.

Awesome, I especially love taht Legio Slavica. The contrast between steel and leather(brown colour) is always awesome to see. Reminds me of Wrath of the Norsemen which had a lot of such "dark" units with shiny steel armour on them.
Western heavy cavlry/knights of this era belong to my most favourite military units ever but are not they suppose to throw their spears in battle instead of charging headlong into the enemy? IIRC, knightly charge with lances started to be commonly used only in the end of the XI. century.
Well this question has two levels. First, the javelin throwing knight. I can safely say he never existed in the Eastern Frankish/German lands. Ottonian and Salian cavalry would use their lances to thrust and, perhaps, in Ottonian time to fence. I have not come across any other evidence. As far as general ‘western’ heavy cavalry is concerned, the idea that the Norman knight threw javelins is overstressed. There is, for example, precisely one Norman horseman throwing his lance on the Bayeux Tapestry. One.
Second is the headlong charge. With the lance used for mainly thrusting an emphasis on charging is hardly surprising, yet one must not fall into the trap of envisioning the knights as stupidly assaulting the enemy. Granted, they were reckless charges such as that of the Battle of Crotone (although the charge itself was successful in breaking the enemy center), but most were more carefully planned and executed like that of the Battle of the Lech (see in the preview). Another fine example is the Battle of Riade 933 when there was a screen of light cavalry hiding the heavies so that the Magyar horse archers would assume only lightly-armoured enemies. When they were close enough, the light horse dispersed and gave way to the heavy horse charge. Some think the positioning was so well planned that the Magyars were intentionally driven into a nearby moor. In the Battle of the Raxa 955, to make a last example, amphibious Frisian infantry fought its way over a river to attack revolting Slavs on the other shore and keep them occupied, while allied Slavs (maybe the forerunners of the Slavic guards?) scouted a way around for the Saxon knights who then fell on the flank the totally surprised enemies.
To summarize: yes the charge with the lances was the main way of attack, but it was seldom the brute, senseless crash of men and horses on other men and horses.
