    Rome II

So another issue comes by, and the dawn of Rome II draws ever closer. The Rome II forums are as busy as ever with everyone wanting to get their suggestions in for what is building up to be the best Total War game ever! Of course such expectations aren't easily met, but CA are seemingly doing their best to keep the majority of us lot happy and eager for more. Since last coverage we've had a rather spectacular collection of new material to digest, ranging from small hints to screenshots like you've never seen them before and sneaky faction previews. I'll be going through some of the main news that has been announced since last time, put your feet, kick back, and enjoy.*

    ROME II - Faction Previews
    ROME II - Faction Previews

Yes you heard right, CA haven't just released one faction preview, but two! There'll be releasing more as the build-up to Rome II increase, so be sure to keep an eye out here so you'll know whenever a new faction preview has been released. However until then enjoy this article and your views and comment's can be posted here and here; so make sure you don't miss out.

First up we have the awesome Roman faction, aptly...

Players of the Roman Faction will benefit economically from its excellence in metalwork, enjoys enhanced military development, and can exploit the masses in order to maintain public order. Furthermore, the player will choose to conduct the affairs of Rome as the head of one of three great Roman houses: The Julia, The Cornelia, and the Junia, each of which are promised bring further economic, military and cultural benefits.*

We're not sure about further detail on this feature, but the Eagle Standard will be sure to keep you up to date. However for now gaze in glory at these screenshots from the Rome faction:

Luckily, that isn't all as CA have all released a preview for the Cathage faction!*

Players of the Carthage Faction will benefit from its mastery of the waves and its heritage as a great trading nation, also as a democracy it enjoys an improved level of population happiness. We'll also has the choice to play as one of three major political powers, each of which confers further military, economic and cultural benefits, of course a picture speaks a thousand words - so here we go:*

That's all the faction news for now, but to be honest I think that's more than enough! Gaze over those images until next time when the Eagle Standard will hopefully be able to provide more faction coverage.

    Dev Chat Updates
    Dev Chat Updates

We've had some updates for the Exclusive Content and Dev chat for Total War Center, which answers a lot of the common questions, provided by Jack Lusted himself. Including a detailed answer to questions about the "Rock Paper Scissors" style balance (something I have been keeping an eye out for!) as well as the promise of: "the Rome II campaign will play differently to any previous Total War game adding more gameplay and depth without increasing unnecessary micromanagement." which really does sound great. Like all Dev chats I strong suggest you read through the entire posts here.*

Update - November 19th CA have been kind enough to release some early pictures of the infamous Cataphracts' armour, they look stunning and as well as the pictures below links to the full resolution picture will also be provided. We've been told to remember that the arm armour will be a separate part... so don't get thinking they've gone and missed a rather important part out!*

    Looks good, right?

Update - December 10th For this update we are given a selection of sneak previews which include: images of the horse models, spears and javelins, and of course the fearsome Barbarian Armour. Alongside all this Jack Lusted answers a question about unit offices and standard bearers!

    Horse Models:

I think it's safe to say CA haven't been horsing around, in fact they look pretty much saddled up... I know, I know Shankbot giddy-up with next image!

    Spears and Javelins:

They look pointy, but I have a feeling this Barbarian Armour will be able to stop them:

All the images for the Barbarian Armour can be found here.

The Creative Assembly have also released a new Development Dairy, which details the "Unmaking of Carthage" where they go through the making of the epic battle! The video can be watched here, and is available in other langues as well. But that isn't all they've given us for Christmas, Jack Lasted talks us through in more detail about Carthage as well as touching at some of Rome II's new features - a must watched, which can be done here. These clips are a must watch, and contain some brilliant little bits of information so I want spoil anything for you guys - if you haven't watched them do so quickly, and comment on it all in this thread.*

I'll be back next time with all the latest Dev Chat news! For now if you have any comments post away here and start discussing what you've seen.*

    Where's Wallus?
    Where's Wallus?

Now onto the next feature of this issue, many of you may of heard of it and a few of you may not - but by now there is no excuse; by now you should of all heard about the biggest Total War screenshot ever taken. You heard me right, the biggest Total War screenshot ever taken! This marvel allows you to explore every inch of the Siege of Carthage, you can zoom in to specific locations, move it around to explore different parts of the battle, and as well as this they've also challenged you to find "Wallus", the Roman equivalent of Wally. Not only will this provided hours of entertainment (and invariably frustration), but it gives you an excuse to spend even longer glued to this wonderful screenshot.*

Now I'm not going to spoil it and tell you where you can find Wallus, mainly because I myself am yet to find him. However I will provide you a small glimpse of what you'll be able to see, but why not check out the entire screenshot over here?*

    Preview: Rally Point 8
    Rally Point 8

In this episode Craig and Will from The Creative Assembly went up to Leeds Armouries and discussed topics from Craig's shocking attempt at a Movember to a quick look at some of the new barbarians signature sounds for Rome II, of course they managed to slip something about about the new Shogun 2 DLC as well! This is a must-watch for us TW fans and you can do such a thing over here, and then post your thoughts in this thread.*

There's no excuse, so hop to it!

As you can see so far CA seem to be living up to our how expectations, and with new content on the way you can expect the Eagle Standard to be back with more Rome II coverage as soon as possible, but for now why not check out the News, Features, Articles & Interviews and the Preview Pictures & Videos threads for Rome II.

That is it from me and I hope you enjoy the rest of the issue as well as the build up to Rome II, and in the words of Mr Lusted himself:

    Shogun II

    Release: The Sekigahara campaign
    Sekigahara

The Sekigahara campaign mod is an awe inspiring masterpiece ; being the only total conversion mod for Shogun 2, the mod delivers a very realistic and exciting experience of the Sekigahara campaign. The sheer amount of work put into this fantastic mod is astonishing, it features no less than a completely revamped faction selection, with all new unit rosters, technology trees... You name it, this mod has it. One of their most recent updates has added eleven playable clans, with 49 regular units added to all of them and 6 unique ones.

As you have probably gathered, the team's tenacity and attention to detail is astounding, and the fact that they have come so far is a true testament to their abilities and their capacity to work together as a team. The units and factions are all incredibly detailed, as is everything else in the mod. Overall, it's a well polished piece of work that is well deserving of praise.

Overall, this mod is a very realistic interpretation of the Sekigahara campaign, where you can choose which side to fight on. Tokugawa, or Hideyoshi? You decide the fate of feudal japan in this mod.

If you have any doubts, I would recommend checking these screenshots, courtesy of the many fans of this mod who uploaded them. To get the latest version of the Sekigahara campaign go here!

    Release: Campaign Balance
    Campaign Balance

    Campaign Balance Pack 1.2

The Campaign balance mod aims to bring a realistic, balanced setting to the classic feudal japan in Shogun 2. It largely tries to bring about unit balance in the game, by increasing the numbers, firepower, and defence capabilities of some of the units. The game now features many types of balanced units, which are applied effectively in combat situations. I feel that this improves the games quality overall, and is a well thought out addition to the classic setting of Feudal Japan.

Some of the more dynamic features of this mod includes an increased chance for generals to defect when engaging enemy armies. I think this is a interesting feature, as it adds an interesting factor to the game should your amazing general desert upon the eve of battle. It also adds another quirky and interesting feature, to do with the dreaded realm divide. It allows you to capture roughly a quarter more territories before it triggers, allotting the player some precious time to expand. It also makes some additions and edits to the technological tree.

On the units side of things, the mod enacts its greatest changes. The first feature that stood out for me, was that Ashigaru are much cheaper to recruit and have a massive number boost, but they are much weaker, and it is more prudent to rely on Samurai. Some of the newest additions also include a general boost to the accuracy of matchlock units, and a slight decrease to accuracy of archery units. It also adds an interesting quirk; the fact that hero units now only consist of one man, much like the original shogun.

Overall, the mod is a well made, well balanced addition to vanilla shogun 2. I have enjoyed playing it thus far, and I do not doubt you will too, dear reader. The download link is here, on the steam community site.

    Released: Darth Mod v4.4++
    Darth Mod v4.4++

The last few months were filled with several astonishingly good Darth Mod updates, for starters, there was version 4.2+++ Bushido edition on September 8. Then with the release of the Assembly Kit and Steam Workshop support in the aftermath of the modding summit a release was made with Workshop support. Then, December fourth, an edition with support for the latest patch and DLC was made, Titled Darth Mod v4.4. After player feedback two more hotfixes have been released making the latest Darth Mod version edition v4.4++.

To start at the beginning, the v4.2 version released in September is chock full of gameplay improvements. At the base of v4.2 are two incredible improvements; number one is an improvement of the melee and animation mechanics, that improves the battle visuals making the battlefield an even more impressive display! Then on top of that, the reloading mechanics have been balanced, resulting in a subtle trade off. Depending on the skill of the general troops have a different firing discipline, well disciplined troops will fire slower but with more devastating volleys and vice versa. Additionally v4.2 brought several fixes for naval battles, cannons now have more hitpoints making them last longer in battle and the damage system has been balanced. Campaign wise the AI has been updated as well, it now responds much better to money and threats during diplomacy and it places armies on strategic places, for a more challenging campaign. The full release notes of v4.2 and the the three updates can be found here and here!

In the aftermath of the modding summit version 4.3 was released, featuring Steam Workshop support it made running your own favorite Darth Mod installation that much easier! Along with the Workshop integration several fixes have been included as well. An audio problem, introduced after the Assembly kit patch has been fixed and over the course of two additional 4.3 updates several more things have been improved upon. AI formations have been repaired, solving some weird behavior and the diplomacy has been adapted again making the AI less hostile so more reasonable diplomacy is possible.

Then December fourth a new edition, an early Christmas gift, got released. Namely v4.4, made after the Otomo DLC and accompanying patch release solves several bugs that were introduced after the patch. Amongst other things, it comes with several optimizations and fixes for land and naval battles balancing out the morale, mass and lethality of units. With the 4.4 release and two additional hotfixes Darth sadly announced that is the last release for Shogun II, as long as no more patches or DLC gets released by the Creative Assembly. So that means that this is the last Darth mod release for the foreseeable future. Not to worry though, the current v4.4 release of Darth Mod is big enough to keep you entertained for many hours!

    Released: Tenka Fubu Campaign
    Tenka Fubu Campaign

Father Christmas not only brings us new Darth Mod releases, it also brings us an update for Tenka Fubu, a Shogun II campaign overhaul set in 1580, 35 years after the vanilla Shogun II campaign. Released by Hayabusa Sushi Tenka Fubu focuses not only on changing the campaign date, it also adds a lot of new and unique clans, new buildings, building chains and a rework of the technology system. By changing the starting positions it ensures that there are several powerful clans, like Oda, all locked together in a single struggle for power. With 12 playable clans you'll see the return of some old time favorites like Date and newcomers like Honganji. Whom, holed up in their last stronghold, must beat the attacking Oda armies to ensure their bloodline lives on.

New in version 1.0.3 is a change in the diplomatic system, diplomatic relations between factions have been changed, especially for the Honganji. The reason the diplomatic relations for the Honganji have been changed is that with 1.0.3 it's now a playable faction. That's not the only clan changes though, to play as the Hashiba, a clan under the command of Hideyoshi with a mission to defeat the powerful Mori, you no longer need the new Ikko Ikki DLC. For the Otomo clan you will now need the Otomo DLC though.

1.0.3 Builds on top of earlier released version of Tenka Fubu, 1.0.1 is more of a bug fix update it fixes several things. 1.0.2 However is a larger update that introduces a lot of changes to Tenka Fubu. .2 Tweaks the armor color for a few clans, adds a brand new option 'Enhanced gameplay' which changes several key values like Realm divide, experience gain and the coming of age age. Then, additionally, new icons and banners are included for the Rebel factions, Wako pirates and European factions. That together with rebalanced unit upkeep costs makes Tenka Fubu an excellent Shogun II campaign overhaul and a must play! More information, plus the download link for the latest version, can be found here!

Release: AI and gameplay improvement modification
    AI and gameplay improvement modification

The AI and gameplay improvement modification for Total War: Shogun II has been released by ‘Deathy’ and changes buildings, construction, and recruitment in an attempt to balance the campaign and make for a more interesting campaign experience. The AI has received a number of improvements through this modification creating more challenges for the player. New garrison changes, larger garrisons, and new units have been implemented that will make sieges more difficult and enjoyable.

The AI and gameplay improvement modification revamps provincial specialty structures and adds matchlock specific bonuses. Clan specific unit recruitment requirements have been changed which allow players to recruit units without requiring “useless” arts. In addition, the modification introduces two new units: the Teppo Snipers and the Nagashino Veterans.

The modification aims at creating a more challenging and unpredictable campaign experience through its changes to the AI. For more information regarding the AI and gameplay improvement modification, go here.

Release: Otomo Clan Pack + Optimization Patch
Otomo Clan Pack + Optimization Patch

The Creative Assembly announced the release of a brand new clan pack for Total War: Shogun II. The Otomo Clan Pack introduces one of the first major clans to make contact with Europeans. The Otomo regularly traded with the Portuguese and converted to Christianity in addition to bringing gunpowder to the battlefields of Japan.

The Otomo Clan comes with 4 new land units and 1 naval unit. As Portugal was the main European trade partner for Otomo clan, they are able to use Portuguese Tercos, which can either be used as a ranged unit, or it can be used for melee in case your army lacks melee units and you have a critical need for them. Native Otomo units include Otomo Donderbuss Cavalry, which is ranged cavalry armed with deadly rifles, Otomo Matchlock Ashigaru is religious line infantry armed with arquebuses, and Otomo Matchlock Samurai are melee units, but can also use firearms which are perfect to weaken the enemy before the charge.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The new naval unit, Otomo Matchlock Kobaya is a light and fast ship with musket-armed Christians on board.

Leased land can be traded to the Portuguese and as a result it increases wealth, while hospital increases conversion rate, happiness, growth, research and how long the city can last under siege. With each upgrade benefits increase. Lastly, some changes have also been done to the Otomo tech tree, which you can see here:

But that’s not all! In addition to this exciting new clan pack, the Creative Assembly has announced the release of an optimization patch for Shogun II. For players that own Shogun II and Fall of the Samurai, the optimization patch will reduce the hard-drive footprint of their install by 6.6 gigabytes. Even players who own one of the two games will see a size reduction! Players will also receive a twenty to forty percent reduction in initial load times and a series of bugfixes and optimization tweaks. Empire and Napoleon news

    The Russo-Turkish War
    The Russo-Turkish War

PunitorMaximus brings you back to 1877 and 1878 with his new The Russo-Turkish War mod! As the title already suggests, it focuses on the heat of the Russo-Turkish War. It was the last proper war between them, and decider of the Balkan future. Now you have a chance to keep Balkans under the Turkish rule for many years to come, or finally free your orthodox brothers with Russia! You can also try it with Balkans states like Romania, Serbia, Greece and Bulgaria. The Balkan revolts, and suppression of them was the main spark which caused this war, giving Russia a casus belli to attack.

The creator has given you a chance to participate in this war with custom battles. It allows you to fully enjoy 19th century battles with new weapons and technologies. For example, breechloading repeating rifles which only became popular in the previous decade, are already in full usage by both parties! They have better accuracy, better rate of fire, and a very high range, along with other type of rifles. And as the time goes on, artillery isn't set in stone either, it's much more powerful, and deadly with new shells like shrapnel fire! As the infamous trench warfare isn't too far away, a lot of deployable earth works, gabionades, and palisades are used on the battlefield. Besides the new weapons, blood effects are also included, to make the battlefield more bloodier and realistic!

    Release: Napoleon: Masters of Europe
    Napoleon: Masters of Europe

l'Aigle and Steph presents you Napoleon: Masters of Europe which merges their smaller mods Imperial Eagle and Vive l'Empereur into one! The goal of this mod is simple, to improve, and balance the gameplay. Currently it mostly focuses on custom battles, with factions like French Empire, Great Britain, French Royalist, Brittany and others playable in land battles, while the 2 former ones are also available in naval battles. As the mod is still in beta status, you can expect much more playable factions, and a proper grand campaign which runs from 1805-1815 to be available in future! Few changes have already been done to it, mostly focusing on 16 playable factions. Each of them have their own victory conditions, a historical leader, and for all factions region, and settlement names in the local language! Each of them also have a unique unit roster. Some units only appear in the beginning of the campaign, but aren't recruitable and if they are destroyed, there's no way to return them. So be sure to use them wise! By time new units become available, or disable, and new uniforms appear, at the proper date. The same happens to unit morale. For instance, French morale drops from 1812, while British morale increases. It mostly depends if you set early, middle or late period for your land battles. Time periods are a brand new feature which has never been used before! Recruitment has also been changed. National units are only available in your home regions, while in other regions you can only recruit local units, and if you send them far away from their homeland, they will replenish much slower. Both have their pros and cons. Local infantry is weaker, but has no limit, while national units are limited. So be sure to keep your empire safe, or the result can be fatal if you lose your core regions! Unit stats have been a big focus in this mod! Cavalry charges are more deadlier than ever, but weaker when they are stuck in melee, units are easier to break, and moral events have a bigger effect, while elite units have been made even stronger! A very welcome gameplay feature is that infantry's ranks will no longer stand idle, and will shoot as soon as they can! To see the full list of features pay a visit here!

Interface hasn't been left untouched too! New bigger, and Napoleon related battle selection UI army set up, unit panel, and loading screens have been included!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Now with increased zoom out, and zoom in you can take a bigger overlook of your great empire, or you can use it to easily select armies if many of them are close together!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Napoleon: Masters of Europe Prussia update

l'Aigle and Steph have released a new beta version for their Napoleon: Masters of Europe mod! This time focusing on Prussia, adding it as the 7th playable faction in the custom battles. Prussia has very well trained units, mostly due to its small size compared to other great powers like Russia and France, which can rely on their huge manpower pool. The new beta includes new units while historically correct uniforms are added to already existing ones. For example, musketeers are reskinned with new blue coat, white under vest and bicorne. Grenadiers are reskinned as well, with new hats which aren't quite finished yet and need few little touches, but they are still the most historical ones you can get! As this is a fresh release, you can expect much more in nearby future! To see the units I already mentioned and for more information about Prussia, pay a visit here!

The previous release focuses on mother Russia. Including loads of new units, along with new textures and uniforms for vanilla units like for Prussia. Unit and region names are in Russian, for example, Kazaks are now Kazachii and St Petersburg is Sankt-Peterburg. Even if Russia doesn't have top notch units, their size balances it out, and makes it as one of the strongest armies in Europe, with only few who can hope to compete with it.

Let's take a look at some of the new units:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Lifeguard heavy infantry (Late period, 1812):

    Reskinned militia:

    Guard Cossacks:

Especially Cossacks are deadly when led by the well known general Kutuzov, who has a big experience with them, and has shown their strength by fiercely fighting against the Ottomans and defending Russia from Napoleon's invasion in 1812. While we are it, let's take a look at historical Russian generals of this mod:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

But if you decide to side against Russia, which probably wouldn't be a wise choice, or make subjects free, then 2 new emergent factions are included, Lithuania and Cossack Hetmanate. The latter one replaces already existing emergent, Crimean Khanate, but can emerge in other provinces like Kiev, Kursk and Novorossiya.

    Pdguru's French Unit Mod
    Pdguru's French Unit Mod

As the title already suggests, the awesome Pdguru's French Unit Mod by Pdguru mostly focuses on units. Many of them are included in separate packs, but you can also download them all together! Some packs change unit appearance while others add new units. Units are very diverse in this mod, from foreign units fighting under France like German Deserter Regiment and Naples Departmental Fusilier Regiment to various guard units like Gendarmes of the Imperial Guard and Voltiguer-Chassuer Imperial Guard!

While we are at it, let's take a look at some units which I haven't mentioned, because the list is truly rich!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Grenadiers a Cheval:

    Fusilier-Grenadiers Imperial Guard :

    Portuguese Legion:

To see even more units, visit the link at the top. It has pictures galore!

Line Infantry's uniforms are based on earlier period with new Tarlton-style helmet. While here you can see new units with shako covers. The mod also includes small detail, and visual changes with improved textures. For example, cavalry have new shiny swords, and horses have a new head with a leather work around it. Unit regimental flag has also been corrected, and changed to the Napoleonic one. Not to mention, 14 new faces alone, and even Napoleon himself has been added!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    ]

The latest update adds over 30 units, which are also available in separate packs, giving you a chance to choose which ones you want to use, and which ones not! While the equipment mod has been enchanted with a new shiny burgle with a wrap around it! A new cannon pack is also included. It focuses on artillery's appearance by completely revising its color by making it green, which was used by France, and instead of a rag on the limber, we now have a proper flag on it, along with many other smaller details! For more information about the new update and for some pics click here!

If you are unsure about the unit quality then I will have to let you know that they are used in other well known mods like Darthmod and LME!

    Preview: Dominion of the Sword
Dominion of the Sword: Dar al-Islam, revealing the Islamic world - Part 4

The Dominion of the Sword team have now released the fourth and final preview in their "Revealing the Islamic World" thread and this time the focus is on the area located around Syria. The preview provides several new images of what will be one of the most hotly contested areas of the map - with Muslim factions fighting each other for control and the looming prospect of a Christian crusade this area will probably be the main focus for several factions during the course of the campaign. The pattern set by the previous previews is also continued here with a very detailed overview of the geography, economy, demography and politics of the region at the time being provided and an explanation of how they influenced the map design. If you want to read a bit more about the area or just want to go and admire the work you just need to visit the post here!

    Fantasy War Materials Released

The Fantasy War mod team have in recent weeks decided to release all the work that they have completed for their mod due to constraints which haven't allowed them to complete their mod. The release contains a map, a few buildings, events and also a few very nice looking units, which the team have very kindly decided to allow the community to use in their own projects, as long as you include them in the credits if you release anything. The second resource that is brought to you in this issue is Elvasat's Shield Textures pack. The pack contains 93 new shield textures and 40 different bosses, which look to be of a very high quality if the image contained in the download post is any indication. Elvasat has allowed everybody in the community to use this resource without permission, but as always you must make certain that you credit the work to him if you do decide to include any of his work in your own release. Release: AOR v2.3
    AOR v2.3

Hold your leggings and find your throne! Third Age just got another level of epic in AOR v2.3! So what is all the fuss about? Well not only is it a massive submod, it is a massive overhaul of an already massive mod! You will be able to get your Third Age on with these new features...Again maybe you should sit down with an ale and bust out the pipe weed whilst you have a glimpse of what will be if so choose! You will find first a completely reworked AOR system. Now you will need to build up your culture in order to recruit foreign units. The recruitment of foreign units will be much slower than the home faction to which they belong. Streamlined recruitment, NEW UNITS, add on of Heirs of Isilidor mod, balancing acts, maybe a fire eater, and a turkey on a spit...You get the idea.

Also, here is a break down for you so you know a little of what AOR has that vanilla 3.2 doesn't:
    - a new Area of Recruitment system has been added
    - 4 new factions (Dunland, Lorien, Ered Luin, Anduin vale)
    - a massive number of new units, many of them AOR units
    - new regions
    - complete rebalancing of all units in the game, see this thread for a general idea how they are balanced
And even more! Believe it or...not!

There is many units to choose from such as stag riding Santa's, snowball throwing women and snowmen. The mod contains the same author's Magyar Mod 1.21, which aims to present the Hungary and it's neighboring countries as authentic as possible as well as repairing the main problems with the original game.

    Preview: Tormented Realms
    Tormented Realms

Danny X, one of TWC's most talented mappers, brings us another extraordinary map. In this preview we'll take a look at the preview of the map of his own Tormented Realms mod. Set in a fantasy world you can find islands shaped like fangs or a skull and even a river in the shape of a dragon. Due to the map's large amount of navigatable rivers and seas naval warfare will become a big part in this mod. If you're afraid of putting your troops on those wooden vessels of dubious quality, or if you just don't like the smell of rotten fish, than you can take the land route, you don't need to build a single ship to conquer all regions but one. This mod will be released both as a submod for TATW, the map will be included in The Holy Pilgrim's COW vs. TATW mod, as well as a fully modfoldered version of the mod. Unfortunately for all of us nothing has not been released yet so all we can do now is look at those nice preview pictures over and over again.
    Spoiler for map pics

    Preview: Tsardoms: Total War
    Principality of Moldova Faction Preview

The Tsardoms: Total War modification team recently unveiled their Principality of Moldova faction preview, full of rich historical background information and incredibly detailed new units. The Principality of Moldova was a small vassal state under the dominion of the Kingdom of Hungary that existed on the Eastern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The Principality fielded mobile armies based on archery and cavalry that relied on harassment and hit and run tactics. Take control as Voivode of the Principality of Moldova and assert your faction’s independence from the Kingdom of Hungary. Be sure to look for allies in the Principality of Wallachia and the Orthodox powers of Bulgaria and the Roman Empire. Take advantage of the fragmented Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, and drive back the retreating Tartar invaders! Expand the Principality’s influence, and lead the people of Moldova to glory in Tsardoms: Total War!

But, of course, there’s more! The Tsardoms: Total War modification team was sure to include some sharp looking units, coupled with detailed descriptions, in the faction preview. Of note are the Moldovian Macemen, fearsome peasants armed with two-handed maces that serve as shock troops. A hit of the mace can crush shields and armor alike. You won't have to worry about the Principality's lack of heavy infantry when you have these guys on your line!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Be sure to watch out for the Calarasi Horsearchers as well, who learned the art of archery from the migratory invaders that passed through their land. The Calarasi are part of the standing army and are ideal for harassing enemy lines. But keep them away from hand to hand combat, they much rather use their bows and arrows!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

This jam-packed faction preview includes many, many more beautiful units and information that can be found here. Go check it out!

    Preview: LOTR-TW Sneak Preview
    LOTR-TW Sneak Preview

Lord of the Rings: Total War Team presents us a sneak preview of the new units from the new upcoming version of the Mod. LOTR-TW is a mod set in fantasy universe of J.R.R Tolkien, the Middle-Earth. This sneak preview shows us few new units, and couple re-skinned ones. The new units are Dragon Knights; New Dalian elite units, best of the best of their ranks matching the Eastern elite. Ents; Living Trees of Fangorn Forest, whom in the books and the movies, unleashed their power to Isengard. These units are a force to reckon with, they are matching the Trolls in power. The Mouth of Sauron; Black Númenórean and Sauron's lietuenant, he will be present in the game as a Hero Unit now rather than as a mere diplomat. Umbar troops; Elite Warguards, these serve as the bodyguard unit for the Umbar General of Haradrim, these units are not recruitable in the campaign. Warguards, these are a weaker version of the Elite ones, recruitable in the campaign from Umbar regions. Axemen, these Umbarian Axemen familiar from the previous version as well, are now reskinned to represent more like a real soldiers. Elves; Noldor Swordguards, these are new elven infantry unit for Noldor Elves, to balance the armies of Noldor in wait for the Elite units for the campaign. These units serve as good regular infantry unit on the battle lines of Noldor. Teleri Marines; These new elven units are Mariners of Elven ports, armed with Harpoons and Swords. Deadly and cheap to maintain.

    Release: MTW-Redux Beta
    MTW-Redux Beta

MTW-Redux Beta is an overhaul mod created by Axalon for the original Medieval Total War. It requires V1.1 or VI/V2.01 of Medieval Total War to run. The current version is still beta, so there might be found minor bugs around. The mod is based around the idea of improving the original game in all aspects, both visually and in gameplay. The main campaign of the mod takes place in 700-1260 A.D, in total there is 560 turns.

The campaign map is overhauled, it offers a more colorful map which explains the terrain around the world very well, for example you could see if the area is arid or lush. The map contains the Europe, North Africa and Near-East. Starting provinces are changed to smaller (or bigger) and more accurate positions. With the rebels and pirates added, it will likely offer competition among neighboring factions who gets these provinces first. The overall goal in the Campaign is total supremacy over the map, either by achieving 60% or full domination of all provinces. The key-factor in the campaign is your nation's development and economy, without them you will fall like the others. There is 18 factions, which of 11 are playable. The following playable factions are France, England, Spain, Italy, Byzantium, Moors, Holy Roman Empire and Poland. The unplayable factions are Burgundy, Lombardy, Aragon, Portugal, Papist, Hungary, Lithuania, Norse, Russia and Saracens.

The mod offers a large variety of units (more than two hundred), all of them are custom made and of better quality than in the original game, but all of them aren't playable for the player. Redux aims to make tactical battles more colorful, thus some of the infrantry also have new shields, whereas Royal Knights have unique appearance compared to other cavalry in order make them stand out in the battlefield. There are also a small pool of unique units for factions, these units are elite and historically fitting for the factions. There are units such as English feudal longbow men or Byzantine Palaceguards. Liege-less solo units are also to be found, there are units such as Grand Champions, Norse Berserkerers, Nubian Slayers and Polish Heroes.

In Strategical mode the characters represent their faction's own colors (such as Agents and Princesses). Also, the Cardinals and Alims are now removed. In replacement of the previous, the Pagan factions (which are Norse and Lithuania) have Druids.

Redux building-AI is also remade from scratch, improving the AI with the building management in the campaign. Many new buildings with their own unique descriptions have been added as well for you to build out there, with their own effects.

    Spoiler for Pictures

    Vault Staff column

    Vault Column II: Moddb

Welcome to the second issue of the TWC Modding Vault Column!

For those that missed the first issue of the column (Previous issues can be found here!), here is a quick revision. Back in May of 2011, there was a proposal for a server to be established for the purposes of backing up modifications found on the Total War Center. This was passed, resulting in the creation of the Atlas server and the Vault Staff.

The standards for uploading modifications work with the download section of the site. TWC allows you to upload files as big as 100mb. It is beyond this size that the Vault Staff acquires a modification and uploads it to the Atlas server. In addition, any modding tools regardless of size are also backed up.

With this system, the site saves a significant amount of money by limiting the size of files that it will host, all the while maintaining a comprehensive system for modification availability. Therefore, part of making this cost-effective system optimal is choosing the best file sharing site to host a large modification.

In the first issue of the column, the site GameFront was reviewed, receiving an excellent 46.5 out of a possible 50 points, factoring in accessibility, storage size per file, download speed, and the long term availability of the files. We have since revised this score as a result of a policy change. A total of 29 countries were recently black-listed from downloading files from GameFront, leading us to downgrade their accessibility score from 20 to 17, taking their overall score down from 46.5 to 43.5.

Using the same categories from the GameFront review, this issue will review the site moddb. moddb naturally catches our eyes as its name highlights its support for modders. Let us see how it stacks up.

    Accessibility:
-Upload (8): You need to sign up to moddb and provide sufficient documentation in line with the terms of use and rules on the 'register a new mod' page. Once submitted, the files themselves may not be immediately available, due to moddb's verification process.
-Download (10): You do not require a moddb account for downloading.
Size per file (10): moddb offers a whopping 2.8gb per file (according to this forum). It should also be noted that moddb allows multiple parts, meaning there is no effective size limit for your modification.
Download speed (6.5): Using a 109mb modification as a test subject, I was able to download at a rate between 165KB/s and 350KB/s.
Time files are stored (10): If your modification is legal and conforms to the terms of use, moddb will host your modification indefinitely. With the lack of stability in file sharing sites, this is a crucial aspect of choosing your host.

moddb receives an excellent 44.5 out of a possible 50 points. With the recent GameFront revision, moddb takes the lead by a single point.

In addition to the indefinite availability of a download, there are also dedicated fields for news, reviews, features, tutorials, videos, images, downloads, and even a forum section that affords developers a welcomed flexibility. For further aquaintence with the ModDB service, consider reading the 'Effective use of ModDB' page.

This concludes the second edition of the Vault Column. If you're ever bored, consider having a look around the Modding Vault!

    Take care and enjoy modding!
