    Icon4 Announcement on Permissions

Creative Assembly have contacted us requesting that we remove our claim to copyright over our own intellectual material.

The core team consider this problematic since there are tools used in the creation of this mod which belong to the copyright of other commercial sources, yet SEGA or the CA does not try to muscle those rights within our work. As such, Dominion of the Sword is suspended indefinitely.

It seems that legally no modder can demand that other modders require permissions from him for use of his work and cannot stop anyone using it since the work was never his to start with- but property of Creative Assembly since they own the work any subsequent work is based on.

can we at least make personal modifications for ourselves without permission (ex:i do a personal submod, so i cannot publish it anywhere on the web but i can play with my modification, only me)

Of course you can. But if you wanted to go public with it you would have to discuss it with us first. Preferably before you made it as you could be wasting time if you first created it and then found out we really don't allow fantasy stuff like dragons.

You will need to get explicit permission from us for that which is the policy of virtually all mods. But definitely possible.

More importantly, does this announcement foreshadow an imminent release?

this is your right and for me isn't so important , if submods will allowed or not.

for me and perhaps for others it is most important, that DotS will be ever realised or not

This seems more then reasonable. You're not working for so long to see your hard work used by others. Good job!

Ehh, this link seems to link to a SVN with all the mods data in it. Are we supposed to be able to see all that?

We have recently upgraded the project and the links changed so sorry for this, I have fixed it now. Otherwise it is viewable and probably even downloadable but without some additional instructions it will not work (the instructions are of technical nature, not really meant as any kind of "protection"). Testers will gain access to mod folder that will work right out of the box and subsequently everyone else. The work itself or its re-use is however still subject to the license in OP.

Okay just thought I would point it out, in case you didn't know people could access that folder and view the data

Thanks, sure it *was* possible to access some data, but it wouldn't have been much use to you

I suggest that you upload separate versions for each tester containing a "fingertip" file. This way if someone leaks the closed beta, you will be able to identify the culprit and, well, take your revenge.

    Just joking.

I guess you guys agree with CA delaying modding of Shogun 2 and Napoleon for long then eh?

M2TW was last CA title that was fully moddable. Since ETW the moddability decreased drastically and as you point out Shogun 2 and Napoleon recieved basically zero modding support. Just count the mods hosted here: 4 for Shogun, 10 for Napoleon, 12 for Empire. Versus _hundreds_ for M2TW and RTW. I would wish for R2TW to break the trend but I fear there will be no mods unless something makes CA/SEGA to change their mod policy.

But yeah, thanks to this DotS won't have much competition in the new TW titles apparently. But it is a bit bitter as we are all huge fans of the series.

Is this a ****ing joke? This is the worst thing that could ever possibly happen to M2TW by far. Wow.

EDIT: This is ****ing ********. What can we do, Hross? I want to see this mod released and playable.

In light of this news, I can say I will never buy anything from Creative Assembly again.

Well this is terribly disappointing. I was looking forward to this way more than Rome 2. It's been years since CA cared about modding and now they care just enough to stop one? What a joke....
