    boysetsfire - Tomorrow Come Today

    Released: April 1, 2003
    Label: Wind-Up Records
    Genre: Post-Hardcore

boysetsfire was a five member post-hardcore band from Delaware. boysetsfire is known for supposedly being one of the first bands to combine melodic singing and screaming in their vocals. boysetsfire blended influences of hardcore and emo into their sound, becoming one of the first "post-hardcore" bands. One thing that distinguishes boysetsfire from other post-hardcore bands is their refusal to "pull any punches" politically. Tomorrow Come Today is their third full-length album release.

    Tracks:
    Eviction Article (4:09)
    Last Year's Nest (3:50) [MP3 here]
    Full Color Guilt (3:48)*
    Bathory's Sainthood (4:18)
    Dying On Principle (2:43)
    Handful Of Redemption (4:00)
Release The Dogs (3:07)* [MP3 here]
    Foundations To Burn (3:46)
    Management Vs. Labor (3:57)
    High Wire Escape Artist (3:45)
    White Wedding Dress (3:12)*
    On In Five (10:21)
    With Every Intention

The sound of Tomorrow Come Today is guided by the excellent vocals and formidable instrumentation. The melodies are catchy, and often well-contrasted by screaming and the riffs are strong. Tomorrow Come Today covers a wide range of subjects, including political issues ("Eviction Article," "Bathory's Sainthood," etc.), spousal abuse ("White Wedding Dress") and economic struggle ("Management Vs. Labor"). Overall, it is a powerful and intense, yet catchy album that I highly recommend. The top three songs (marked with *), IMO, are "Full Color Guilt," "Release The Dogs," and "White Wedding Dress."

    Rating: 9.5/10

For some reason, I don't like any other post-hardcore bands; I like boysetsfire though. It might just be me, though, and not anything really to do with them.

I'm listening to their myspace now. It makes my skin crawl. I hate the over-commercial production job and the pretty vocals.

I'm hard to please today, ain't I?

I don't think the "over-commercial" production job is as "severe" as you think it is. It's not as if they're trying to appeal to MTV fans with good production quality either (I don't think they've ever been on a non-indie label), but I understand where you're coming from; that's one of the things I hate about the new Alkaline Trio material (you've probably no idea who they are  ). I also understand your distaste for the "pretty vocals," but I actually like them (and if you only listened to "Requiem," you ought to listen to "Release The Dogs," it has a lot of screaming and isn't as "pretty").

I listened to all the songs, and I hated them all equally. "Release the Dogs" was every bit as bad, but making a lame effort at sounding tougher, and falling pathetically flat on its face. If there's one thing I can't abide it's this kind of cynical commercialised sugar-coated pseudo-punk. Death to it.

I disagree with that classification of boysetsfire, but fair enough.
