He was not a strong willed or wise man, I wouldn't call him an idiot but he was just no cut for leadership; a follower to easily influenced by others while also proud (looking at how he handles the messengers from Círdan in UT), an unfortunate combination

He wasn't a complete fool, but he was quite a long way from being considered the gem of the House of Finarfin

Yes but he was wise enough it would seem to marry a high spirited and valiant Sindarin Lady, or Gil-Galad is very hard too explain. Before people start I am referring to the later geneology of Gil-Galad not the line in the Silmarillion.

Perhaps idiot was too strong a word then. Let's look at the other Kings of the Noldor, shall we?

Feanor:Strong willed, but not very wise. But also charismatic and able at keeping his subordinates in line.

Fingolfin: Wiser than his brother, strong but not as assertive as evidenced by not managing to convince the Princes of the Noldor to storm Angband

Fingon: Having his father's best qualities but reckless. He was also more assertive than his father. He would have been good if he wasn't terribly unlucky.

Finrod: Very wise, strong willed and followed a successful policy. Unfortunately, he didn't leave an undisputed heir.

Turgon: Wise but slow to heed warning and too proud to abandon Gondolin.

    Orodreth: Read Ngugi's post.

^Good thing to do Muller, certainly someone who hadn't read about the Shibboleth of Feanor would have popped up and we we would be having the same discussion for N^Nth time

    @ muller'
Well, in my experience love tends to be the opposit to both wisdom and logic haha

    @ Feanaro C'
Elves have the same weaknesses as Men (we're the same species if also given different racial taits), and no one is sinless hehe.

If to point at vices in Finrod is that he was far to honest (irony) and at the same time not sufficient good retorican (but hey, who can battle Fëanor in debate? [His sons spoke like him in Nargothrond])

Yes love is a great deal of fun, and not fun at the same time. It honestly makes no damn sense. Wait Tolkien knew this, or why would the fairest and as it turned out mightiest of all the children born into ME fell for a ragamuffin exile.

I must ask you a question - is their any sources that suggest the woodland realm is mightier that Lorien?

The opposite is posted some pages back...

A quote saying that Lórien will be the last realm standing against Sauron if the One Ring is not destroyed.

The only area which Thranduil's kingdom has an advantage over Lórien is in numbers, as the Silvans of Mirkwood has the far greatest population of any Elven realm at this time.
In lore, presumably tech', presumably skill and in magic capacity Lórien is the winner (as Mirkwood's Sindar wanted to live like and become like the Silvans, while Lóriens Sindar, and later Noldor, population never is suggested to tried to levae their past behind them)

The woodland realm is certainly not more powerful than Lorien. Then it gets complicated. Thranduil has many more people for sure, but no Noldor and few Sindar. Far more important, there is no Galadriel in the Woodland Realm. Her presence alone ensures that Lorien cannot fall to any but a reconstituted Sauron in his full strength. Thranduil can be beaten by normal forces, his troops struggle against the masses of Goblins during the Battle of Five Armies, they are mauled on the Dagorlad losing 2/3's of their men.

Oropher did not listen to Gil-Galad, charged in too early along with Amdir [I think] and they got slaughtered by Sauron's forces.

Yes, they were lightly armed compared to the Eldar of the west, and charged forward before the command to advance was given, by Gil-Galad. This is steady theme throughout Tolkiens writings, the lightly armed Nandor or Silvan Elves cannot stand up against heavy armed forces in direct combat. Heavily armed Sindar and Noldor tend too slay orcs in heaps.

Mithril.Galvorn i stated to be as hard as steel, but Mithril is explicitly stated to be even harder.

"Mithril! All folk desired it. It could be beaten like copper, and polished like glass; and the Dwarves could make of it a metal, light and yet harder than tempered steel. Its beauty was like to that of common silver, but the beauty of mithril did not tarnish or grow dim."

Value though is a different matter. Mithril is stronger, more useful and beautiful while Galvorn enjoys the fact that only Eol knew how to make it, and thus it's value is increased through it's rarity.

Eldar of the West are largely Sindar and Nandor heavily influenced by a minority of Noldor. Eldar by definition only means those who STARTED the Journey to Aman and their descendents. Oropher was a back to nature sort of Sindar who took over a largely Nandor/Nelyar realm, Nelyar being the Avari branch of the Teleri. Tatyar the Noldorin branch of the Avari seem to be much like the Noldor, though less wise and perhaps even more violent. They are also a bit shadowy I tend too think they were absorbed into the Eldar of Lindon, though I must stress that is a personal opinion COMPLETELY unsupported by any quotes. I know they were the more westerly branch is all.

Thanks I was confused by the fact that galvorn is also described as a really strong material and very rare.
