    Default Scottish Football 2014/2015

Guid evening everyone! I'm updating this thread for the new season, the original starting post can be found below. Anything concerning the wonderful game in Scotland belongs in this thread, featuring the new SPFL and it's lower leagues, the Championship, League One and League Two. Any comment about the names being fanciless leads to a direct ban by GED

The 12 teams elected to play in the Scottish Elite division are, as follows:

CELTIC Under the command of IRA Lieutenant Lennon the Hoops are destined to win the League since the demise of their former rivals Rrrangers. On the international level, the departure of Gary Hooper, and most of all Victor Wanyama might make things more difficult and the Irish...erm Weegieland side faces an uphill task to emulate the success they enjoyed in the Champions League last season. Amido Baldé looks to replace Hooper up front, while pacy Ajax Winger Derk Boerrigter will add a new dimension to Celtic's attack, who still need a central midfielder to replace super-transfer-man Wanyama- the Kenyan being the most expensive SPL transfer ever. In any case, the Celts are the favourites for everything.

MOTHERWELL The Steelmen hail from a hometown that raises up to the name, with the Lanarkshire being named as Britain's most ugly town. However, that might seem a bit unfair considering it only consists of car parks. Despite that, they feature a strong team that secured two second place finishes in as many years. Having lost a number of important players and exiting the Europa League against Kuban Krasnodar (probably) the addition of experienced men like James ''The Nightmare of France'' McFadden and Stephen ''is slower than Andy Driver'' McManus as well as Estonian talent Anier and (formerly) dangerous John Sutton upfront, Stuart McCall's team look to repeat their success from last season once again.

ST JOHNSTONE The little club from the wonderful medieval town of Perth was under everyone's radar for most of last season, but still managed to claim a sensationel third spot. Now they started the new season with a shock win over a Viking full stack... erm Rosenborg Trondheim, followed by another success over FK Minsk from East Poland... Belarus it's called these days, right? Signings like New Zealand international Rory Fallon (who is not only called Kiwi for his nationality, but also as a tribute to his qualities) might not sound spectacular, but the new man on deck, Tommy Wright, kept his crew together and seems to have similar leading and motivational qualities as Alexander the Great. Thus, no one should ever underestimate the power of the Perth side of the force.

INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE Yes, up there in Inverness at the Loch Ness they actually play football, too- well, when they are not busy bulding plastic Nessies for the tourists, that is. And they do it in style. Finishing Fourth and reaching the League Cup semi final was a great success for the Highlanders last season, steered by warrior chief Terry Butcher who leads his men forward in battle. His most loyal compatriot in the brawl is skipper Richie Foran, who always gives his all and heart and liver for the club! The captain, who plays everywhere and scores everywhere, has seen the departure of midfield maestro Andrew Shinnie and the arrival of eleven day labourers, who are unknown but give Caley's squad the necessary depth. Still, there are critical voices, but you should never doubt in Chief Butcher, otherwise he'll butcher you!

ROSS COUNTY Inverness' little neighbours are situated in the little village of Dingwall, which was founded by Vikings but barely counts 5000 souls. When the SPFL comes to town, most of them are inside the football ground. In recent years they saw the magnificent, sensational, amazing, flabbergasting, breathtaking, spectacular, Byzantininitionary, ballistic-trebuchetic, brilliant rise of their teams from the third tier of Scottish Football to the Premier League. There, the village people fared surprisingly well in their debut season, finishing closely behind their Highland rivals, whom they managed to beat on the last day of the seasons. Directed by the Adams family, the ''Staggies'' want to build on that success in the new season.

DUNDEE UNITED At Tannadice Stadium in the City of Discovery (where one mainly discovers a big drug business) the clocks are still set in the past. The club experienced its greatest successes in the 80s in a rivalry called the ''New Firm'' with their equally succesfull rivals Aberdeen. Furthermore, manager Jackie McNamara left SPFL new boys Partick Thistle last season, and taking players Chris Erskine and Paul Paton with him spilled a lot of bad blood. Tonight's opening game of the nw season still ended in a 0-0 draw, but not without a proper brawl! McNamara wants his Arabs (they are called that for fielding muslim players only... well, that or their sandy pitch in the 60s) to at least finish inside the Top 6 again and make some success in the cup, but he will only be satisfied if there's even more.

HIBERNIAN The Hibs from the Harbour town of Leith in Edinburgh have been named as one of the most unsuccesful sport clubs on our planet by the renowned Times just a little time ago. Hibs, who also have Irish roots like Sellik and the Tangerines (the club above), did everything they could to prove the Times right. Despite reaching two successive cup finals and the European Cup this season, a legendary 1-5 thrashing on the hands of arch rivals Hearts, a lacklustre 0-3 against Celtic and finally a 0-7 drubbing by Swedish side Malmö proved. Irish wizard Pat Fenlon on the sideline seems to have lost his magic and is in desperate need of a turnaround of fortunes, if he wants to make Hibs more than Scotland's laughing stock. The Leith side spent 200k on striker James Collins to replace top scorer Leigh Griffiths- can he save Fenlon's job?

ABERDEEN Word goes that a team in the North East is underachieving! Those are the Dons from Aberdeen, a rather big club whose fans always expect a lot. Failure to win domestic silverware also led to a drop in the table in recent seasons, but once again many pundits predict a decent finish for Aberdeen, perhaps even a 2nd place. Manager Derek McInnes is sceptic, and he has every right to do so. Despite the arrival of former International Barry Robson (slow!), Former Rangers talent Gregg Wyle (one- dimensional!) and midfield motor Willo Flood (arrives from United! And aye, he looks like an alien) it's hard to predict how the Reds will fare this season. Only one thing can be taken for granted: The Fans will only love McInnes for a title.

KILMARNOCK Maybe they don't play tiki taka, but at least Killie Kalla! Nice football is Killie's style (defending not required) and it seems new manager Allan Johnston will continue where Northern Irisman Kelly Shiels left. The latter had to go into exile after a row with the Scottish Football Association despite doing good work in the earldom of Ayrshire. Down there in South Western Scotland the problems are a lack of fans and a lack of money, but attractive football seems a good way to tackle these problems. If only it would finally come with success! Perhaps this season can see Killie reach the Top 6, but a prominent number of departures suggests otherwise.

HEARTS When Rangers entered administration on Valentine's Day 2012, followed by liquidation and the foundation of Sevco The Rangers (which started in the fourth tier Third Division. Aye, in Scotland 3=4) a time of turmoil and crisis for Scottish football started. This summer it reached a new high, despite reforms being carried out by the football governing bodies (like renaming the Third Division to League Two- well done!) when Hearts entered administration on 19 June. After years under the regime of Lithuanian madman Vladimir Romanov it hardly came as a surprise, but on the sporting side it means the Jambos will start the new season with -15 points and a transfer embargo. A bunch of teenagers must now save Scotland's third biggest club from relegation, and if they manage to do it it would rank up there with Stirling Bridge or Bannockburn. Meanwhile, the fans hope a CVA can be reached to save their club, before the boys on the pitch will go on to become legends.

ST MIRREN With afore mentioned conditions at Hearts, an observer might thought the other teams are safe. Quite the opposite. Many pundits and experts still name St Mirren to go down, but what do they know, they always finish second bottom! Which would mean a relegation playoff against the vice champions of the First Division/Championship/Second Tier (To hell with it!), if the author is not mistaken... Anyway, St Mirren are still the League Cup holders after beating Hearts and with highly gifted Paul McGowan staying on they might even go up the table and into the Top 6! But no, seriously, they will finish 11th. As always. Sorry Andy.

PARTICK THISTLE Rumour has it there's a new bloke on the bloc! Glasgow's second best team has made it back to the top division- and a blockbuster crowd of 8000 at today's game promises a lot- they will surely be a good addition to the League! Since badboy Jackie McNamara has left town, the new sheriff is Alan Archibald, who leads a young band of fighters out on the streets. Talented they are, energetic they are, a fighting spirit they have (did that sound like Yoda?) - and the point deduction for Hearts presents them a golden chance on a silver tablet. They won the First Division in style last year and now the students's club from one of Glasgow's nicest parts- it's so nice I actually said Glasgow there, not Weegieland- is on a mission to stay. Arrivals from Mexico, Barcelona and Aberdeen (in the form of diehard Isaac ''P Diddy'' Osbourne) give the squad an exciting touch- the Jags want to rock the toon!

And now, if you are still here despite my annoying jabbering, enjoy the new season and our fine discussion!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Hey there, I don't know if there's a considerable interest in Scottish football on here, but I thought a thread about it wouldn't harm anyone. Of course the Scottish Premier League (SPL) has already started a few months ago, but better late than never!

For anyone interested in this topic I will introduce the 12 Clubs of the SPL at first, in order of their current league position:

Celtic: The reigning champions find themselves not only at the top of the league again, but also progressed to the Champions League last 16 this season. Led by ginger goblin Neil Lennon the ''Hoops'' are strong favourites for the title after the liquidation of their arch rivals Rangers. Despite sometimes playing like drunken Irish gypsies in the SPL, Celtic's defenders have really improved and impressed in the Champions League, joined by young holding midfielder Victor Wanyama from Kenya.
The club itself was founded in 1887 by a Catholic Irish monk and Celtic has retained that heritage ever since, most famously expressed in its bloody rivalry with protestant Rangers. And of course Rod Stewart's little son's second word he ever spoke was: ''Celtic!''

Inverness Caledonian Thistle: Probably the biggest surprise of the season yet- Caley Thistle are in second place! The Highlanders, who can watch Nessie swimming from their stadium, are usually contenders for relegation, but have surprisingly strengthened this season under manager Terry Butcher, still famous for playing on for England with blood all over his head back then in Sweden. His young team, led by midfield genius Andrew Shinnie, have defeated both Celtic and Aberdeen away for the first time in millenia this season and are on course for their best ever finish.
Caley have only been founed by a fusion in 1994, but feature a strong rivalry with newly promoted Ross County.

Motherwell: The ''Steelmen'' from Motherwell, proud double winner of ''The UK's ugliest town'', don't have a big budget, a nice stadium or famous players, but always challenge for 3rd respectively 2nd place. With Michael ''baldhead'' Higdon, who scores as he wants, up front and Jamaican winger Chris Humphrey, who is faster than his own shadow, they have two crucial players in their team among other incessant performers. Founded in 1886 they hail from the formerly steel producing area of Lanarkshire and hence are named Steelmen. The 'Well might have a disappointing home form this season, but everyone in Scottish fitba knows: Never underestimate Motherwell.

Hibernian: The second team founded by Irish immigrants, Hibernian are one of the biggest clubs in the country, but haven't won the Scottish Cup since 1902- ouch! Labelled one of the ''Most unsuccessful teams of all times'' by the Times, the ''Hibees'', unlike Celtic, have left their Irish-Catholic character behind in the 137 years since their foundation. Traditionally, they are dangerous up front, exemplified by this season's top scorer Leigh Griffiths, but suffer problems at the back, where their players behave like a herd of cows before the snake.

Aberdeen: The ''Dons'' are the last non-Old Firm (OF = Celtic & Rangers) team to have won the SPL title back in the 80s, but claim and reality have been as much apart from each others as Pluto and the Sun ever since. Led by ''grandpa'' Craig Brown (known from Mrs. Brown's Boys) the young team had started this season very promisingly, though, but has lost its form recently due to a series of injuries to first team players. Newly signed Northern Irish sharpshooter Niall McGinn has given the ''Reds'' the deadly effectivity up front again and pacy teenage winger Ryan Fraser rips SPL defenses apart like an Aberdeenshire Messi. The Dons, founded in 1903, find themselves in a decisive situation after a number of disappointing seasons.

St Johnstone: Despite featuring a version of the Byzantine double eagle on their badge, St Johnstone are a considerate club to say the least. Not having been in debt since 1985, St Johnstone never seem to spend a penny on new players, but still do well in recent years. Founded in 1884 at the old medieval capital of Scotland, Perth, the ''Saints'' have been a yo-yo team for most of their history, but have now become a Top 6 team, thanks to the work of former manager Derek McInnes and current manager Steve Lomas. Bolstered by a strong midfield containing Scotland international Murray Davidson and set piece master Liam Craig, they are also in for a challenge this season and will look to climb up the table as soon as possible.

Dundee United: Before the start of the season, many would have tipped the ''Tangerines'' for second place, but thanks to a horrible defense they find themselves only in 7th place right now. Formed in 1909, the ''Arabs'' had a diversified history, becoming a top team once again in the last few years. Having won the Scottish Cup in 2010 and playing deadly duo Jon Daly & Johnny Russell up front, United are always up for the European spots. But manager Peter Houston, who has even less hair than Homer Simpsons, has to solve problems at the back to steer his team to glory again- otherwise there won't be many discoveries in the ''City of Dicovery'' this season- apart from the usual junkies on the streets, that is.

Heart of Midlothian: Traditionally one of the biggest clubs in Scotland, cup holders Hearts have one of the broadest supports in the country, but suffer under the regime of Lithuanian mad man Vladimir Romanov. Romanov, Lithuania's 2007 dancing star and 2000-2012 criminal of the year, took over the club in 2004 when he saved it from administration- only to bring Hearts near admin a few times himself. Now the ''Jambos'' find themselves on the brink of administration again and had to let many of their best players leave in the summer. The club, which was founded in 1874, therefore has to rely on products from its successful youth academy once again, but fans will be more than content with a midfield finish this season.

Kilmarnock: Dubbed the ''Ayrshire Barcelona'' Kilmarnock are arguably the most entertaining team to watch in Scotland, who always try to play attractive attacking football. Unlike teams like Dundee United they intentionally neglect defense to have more potential for goals themselves. They are dependent on Irish striker Cillian Sheridan, who always reminds me of a wood gnome, and technically gifted midfielders like young Liam Kelly or pacy James Dayton and led by ever angry manager Kenny Shiels. Surprisingly Shiels has to serve a touchline ban at the moment, only because he insulted various referees and then accused them of fabricating things about him- poor Mr Shiels.
Formed in 1869 Killie are one of the oldest football clubs in the world and most famous for their tasty Killie pies! Yum!

Ross County: The ''Staggies'' from Dingwall are in the SPL! Aye, that's a sensation! Hailing from a Highland village with just under 5000 inhabitants, Ross County were founded in 1929 and admitted to the Football League in 1994. The tiny club climbed up the ranks of Scottish fitba under the guidance of the Adams family and reached the 2010 Cup final against all odds. The minnows were defeated 3-0 by Dundee United but went on to lose only a single game last season and win the First Division by a country mile! Now the Staggies have settled in the SPL and based on an usually strong defense they are going to stay up. That would be great for the Highlands and the village, but not many fans of the other fans won't cheer them up- I mean ''Where the is Dingwall?''

St Mirren: Sometimes you feel sorry for St Mirren. After being famous for playing ugly defensive football for years and always finishing second bottom, they now changed to playing attacking football with more risk and always finish second bottom. Stylish manager Danny Lennon always thinks his men dominated the game, but couldn't take their chances. There is some truth in this and skilled players like midfielder Kenny McLean or Paul McGowan are proof of St Mirren's qualities. But in the end it is undeniable that the ''Buddies'' from Paisly, formerly a center of the textile industry, are always second bottom. Founded in 1877 they have of course also seen more successful times, but if you can choose a team, never go for St Mirren. Sorry, Buddies!

Dundee FC: The ''Dees'' are the traditional rivals of Dundee United, with their stadium Dens Park standing less than 100 meters away from United's Tannadice. Yi dinnae believe me? Look here! http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium..._dens_park.jpg
But the fact that Dundee lost both city derbies this season 0-3 points at the various problems they have: Neither can they defend properly nor score. But it's not exactly Dundee's fault, who were only promoted one day before the start of the season- thanks to the demise of Rangers. The poor Dees have improved recently and always give their best, but there are high doubts if it will be enough to stay in the league. Founded in 1893 they are older than their Tannadice rivals, but tradition and a big fanbase probably won't help in this race for survival.

That's it about the SPL, but I named this thread ''Scottish Football 2012/2013'' for a reason. You can also discuss the national team here as well as all the various cup competitions and the SFL leagues as well. There's a team called ''The Rangers'' playing in the Third Division right now, who are allegedly connected to ''Rangers FC'' and some people might be interested in them as well.

    Enjoy!

    Erm...

Jeez, we cannae even defend a lead for 60 seconds. A cracker at Dundee, though, this is going to be another 6-6!

Dundee Utd really have a horrible, horrible goalkeeper in Cierzniak. Look at the way he conceded the goals.

You got me wrong, though, but I'm sure In3x will enlighten you

What a game at Tannadice. An epic comeback by Caley, only to be denied a win by Jon Daly. Fantastic end-to-end stuff, albeit with a number of defensive mistakes. United will hopefully replicate them at Tynie next Sunday

Was nice to see wee Forrest back in the team the other day, he brings a directness and drive that's simply missing when he's not in the squad.

Hmm yes think you're easier to beat than caley

It kills me to say that I wasnt there that night, was still raging at the cup final defeat to those who shall not be named so decided no to go. wish we still had dorman. I'll be happy if we score on sunday. Since danny took charge we've shipped 22 goals against celtic and not scored once.

Belatedly, but why 'chridheil' instead of 'cridheil'?

I thought only the Irish lenited the first letter in adjectives.

Lol he's definitely had his bad moments, let's just praise the lord above that we have big Forster now. Coincidently the last time St Mirren scored into us, I suppose we've been making up for it since.
