If You remember: all the crossings of the vanilla rivers have some kind of sand under it, so it's easily localizable on the strat map even under the fog of war, and if there are to many of them, the river seems to be very stupid (on my opinion). Let's see what I'm talking about and let's look at this vanilla river:

Now look at this picture and try to localize a river crossing:

As You can see the land under the bridge is clean and when you zoom out, you see only the rivers so it seems more realistic, just like in later TW series...
Another thing is that you have noticed of the vanilla rivers: the coasts are seem to be elevated. Let's see:

That small landline (the beach) that follows the river, seems to go down and joins the river, so it creates some kind of 3d effect (because the river seems to bee under the land). Infact it's so, but here the land goes up and than goes down to join the river (only way to do it) so it seems 3d. I've eliminated that kind of "contour" so the land now joins directly the river:The only glitch is that the stream disappears but I'm working on it...
This truly is some great work. However, what compels me to comment on this thread is your high altitude lakes. If you don't mind indulging my curiousity, how have you done it?
I too am working on a strat map which I intend to release to the TWC hopefully soon. It is based on real world heights which contrary to what some believe, works beautifully though perhaps that is because of the scale I am working on. However, the lakes look atrocious as all water surfaces are required to be below sea level. I have long been pondering on a way around this. You seem to have found this holy grail and I would be most grateful if you could share your findings.
Is it a ground type? a resource? I wonder if you realise just what a gem you have uncovered. I am sure I cannot be alone in marveling at your discovery.
