Default The Stainless Steel Answer Station - ask all questions here - NOT FOR BUG REPORTS!

A few days ago I noticed that this forum didn't have a thread like this the way the TATW forum does. It's been working well there, so we should try it here too, especially since new, single-question threads have doubled ever since Dragonchampion joined twcenter.

This thread is for all simple questions that you have about Stainless Steel. If you want to discuss something ("would the Byzantines have developed pikes if they hadn't died out?"), start a thread. If you just want an answer to a question ("why are unit stats like this?", "how can I change the cost of units?"), ask here.

So ask away, and let this be the official anthem of this thread: http://drzaius3.ytmnd.com/

Oh god I'm laughing like hell right now.

Yeah, I noticed the lack of a question and answer thread as well, so I assumed they wanted single question threads, for people to discuss.

To be fair though it's giving the forum a more "Lived in" feel, imo. Too little chatting here; I kinda expect the forum of such a large and well done mod to have a hell of a lot more activity; and I have noticed that every single one of my questions seems to get a few people chatting about them as well.

EDIT: I also wanted to point out the reason for my making individual threads; where a question thread wouldn't get much attention (considering the low amount of people that actually post). threads would get a better chance of being responded to and answered in a rather quick timescale. When I have a question, especially a major one, I normally stop playing for a little while until my question is answered.

How do I prevent Istvan from destroying me? Anytime I start a new game, he kills all of my family members and seduces all of my women.

What does the Scholae barracks do? I know they allow Cataphracts to be trained, but the description says they can only be recruited in Constantinople, so what's the point of building them in other cities?

I guess it's just for the Late Musketeers once you get the Flintlock event, and the law bonus that it provides.

Edit: It does require a huge city to build though. Besides Constantinople and Jerusalem, huge cities will be few and far between.

    Dear all,

I have a problem to upgrade Fortresses to Citadels, as well as Large Cities to Huge Cities. For example Bern is already more than 21k people as a Fortress, and I can't upgrade it. Can anybody tell me what are the number of inhabitants for each of the levels in Stainless Steel? And is there a list of cities / castles that can't be upgraded (or that can be ugraded) to Huge Cities and Citadels?

Thank you very much for any help, and please forgive my English if I am not clear,

Thats a well known issue, citadels and huge cities are hard to get to, too hard even, you need a 10 chivalry general with anti-squalor traits and ancillaries, i suggest you simply use "add_population" cheat to get the last few thousands you need for the citadel/huge city.

    Dear Baltic Warrior,

Thank you for your answer. Sorry to ask, I guess it is very easy, but I am really dumb with IT, how can I use "cheat"? Is there a specific group of keys to get there?

    Thanks in advance,

    FFJean

With units such as halberdiers, pikemen and such, what are the benefits of going spearwall vs. spearwall with guard mode vs. spearwall turned off?
Not to mention the variations of ordering them just to stand there vs. ordering them to attack vs. ordering to move through the enemy...

depends on the situation. try a couple custom battles to test it out. its more getting used to the battle system than anything historical.

Someone should make a planet of the apes mod!

Glad you made this thread though. Are there going to be more visible specific armor upgrades in 7.0?

Oh, I do have an issue right now. I was rather bothered by how fast my general's would age so I took the advice of some fans. I deleted the ageing script and set the timescale down to 0.50. But my general's seem to still age every turn and now I just have to wait an immensely long time to advance in technology.

How should I go about rectifying this?

    Two possible causes for that.

    1. You didn't delete the aging script properly.
    2. You didn't start a new campaign after deleting the aging script.

Could you post the script? The script is gone, but I didn't know it wasn't save game compatible or something.

In Constantinople you'll be able to recruit the special units and Late Musketeers. In other Huge Cities you'll be able to recruit Late Musketeers.

"Besides Constantinople and Jerusalem, huge cities will be few and far between."

    Very few - Iconium.

"With units such as halberdiers, pikemen and such, what are the benefits of going spearwall vs. spearwall with guard mode vs. spearwall turned off?"

Turn on Spearwall and Guard Mode until the enemy has charged. Once they have smashed against your line, take off Guard Mode. Your pikemen or halberdiers will now advance and kill everything in their path (especially cavalry). If you need to move your pikemen or halberdiers from one place to another, take off Spearwall, and they'll move faster. They will also be able to run now.

Always make back-ups of files before fiddling with them.

Why are my enemies getting infinite generals? I tested this with one game and no matter how many I killed, next turn a 4 star general would ALWAYS appear out of nowhere and join their ranks. It's utterly stupid! What script is this? How can I remove it?

It is a script that is in place because the AI factions tend to risk their family members unnecessarily and doesn't know how to manage a family tree after a few generations. It is also in place so that players have to militarily defeat the AI faction instead of killing off the family members. It is there to make sure factions don't suddenly die. I don't know exactly which script it is but I'm pretty sure removing it isn't save game compatible.
