Thread: biggest thing in the universe found

Default biggest thing in the universe found

Newfound blob is biggest thing in the universe
An enormous amoeba-like structure 200 million light-years wide and made up of galaxies and large bubbles of gas is the largest known object in the universe, scientists say.

The galaxies and gas bubbles, called Lyman alpha blobs, are aligned along three curvy filaments that formed about 2 billion years after the universe exploded into existence after the theoretical Big Bang. The filaments were recently seen using the Subaru and Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea.

The galaxies within the newly found structure are packed together four times closer than the universe's average.

Some of the gas bubbles are up to 400,000 light years across, nearly twice the diameter of our neighboring Andromeda Galaxy. Scientists think they formed when massive stars born early in the history of the universe exploded as supernovas and blew out their surrounding gases. Another theory is that the bubbles are giant gas cocoons that will one day give birth to new galaxies.

The finding will give researchers new insight into what the structure of cosmos looks like at the largest scale.

"Something this large and this dense would have been rare in the early universe," said study team member Ryosuke Yamauchi from Tohoku University.

"The structure we discovered and others like are probably the precursors of the largest structures we see today which contain multiple clusters of galaxies," Yamauchi said.

Perhaps it is sentient. Perhaps it is moving towards our galaxy. Perhaps it is going to consume us all and make us slaves by telepathy.

Good article, thankyou for bringing it to our attention RexNecros. This illustrates how insignificant our galaxy really is in the Universe. I think it casts light not only on the process by which new stars are born, as the gas clouds are star making nurseries, but also how something that dense can remain stable without collapsing back into iteself and thereby into a Black Hole in the vast dark blanket we call Space. The gravitational forces acting upon this matter must be immense. Perhaps it is a portal entry of Blackhole material into the Universe rather than an exit point, as would be expected with the collapse of a single star.

Yes, maybe it think it's the "greetest" and is inflamed by our stupidity?

    Seriously, though, that's ****in' cool.

Do any of you actualy realize the size of this sing?
Its crazy, I mean if we could travel at the speed of light (wich we cant) it would take us 200 milion yers to cros it.
Humanity has existed for a milion yers. Just compare.

In contrast to the efforts of tiny Israel to make contributions to the world so as to better mankind, one has to ask what have those who have strived to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth done other than to create hate and bloodshed.

Good find, very intresting. This is another realization of the unimaginable size of the universe. It really makes you wonder, doesn't it. I just can't wait to see what this giant bundle of gas will create in the very distant future. (If i was able to) I really wonder what else is out there!

Maybe it's God, or the remnants of a computerized space probe that colided with God.

They make it sound like some giant organism sucking up galaxies.
There's more than likely stranger things than that taking place somewhere out there, but that is a cool article.
I wonder what you would see if you crossed space, reached the anti-matter that lies outside of space, and then crossed whatever was there?

Multiple Futurama references going on here - it warms my cockleshells to see it. Futurama-4-eva.

It is an interesting article. But I think it is pretty much guesswork.

That the actions of one somehow warrants the limitation, or even the revocation, of the unalienable liberties of another. While the intentions behind this rationale could be considered noble, it is unexcusably naive, and must be resisted at all costs."

most asronomy/cosmology/and anything to do with space is guesswork, it could even be some snot, if somone sneezed on it.
