The troubles began when James VI, son of the star-crossed Mary Queen of Scots and nephew to Queen Elizabeth I became James I of England.
The unfortunate Stuarts, which Voltaire called the unluckiest dynasty in European history were loved devotedly by some and hated passionately by others. Finally, when the grandson of James, also called James, became James II of England a plot was hatched to depose the Stuarts in favor of the husband of James' daughter, Mary - William, Prince of Orange and Statholder of the Netherlands.
It became known as the Glorious Revolution. James had made many enemies and already a rebellion by his own illegitimate(?) nephew, James Crofts, Duke of Monmouth had been cruelly crushed. James' supporters in Scotland and Ireland fought bravely but ultimately in vain. They sought shelter with Louis XIV, the Sun King of France, ever maintaining that James was the rightful king. Thus they became known by their monarch's Latin name...
The followers of Jacobus - the Jacobites.
It is the year 1715. The childless (some said because she favored women like Lady Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough over men) Queen of England, Anne Stuart is at death's door. Her closest Protestant relative is the dour Germanic elector of Hanover, George of the House of Guelph. Allowing herself to be led on by men like Bolingbroke and Oxford and rejecting the victorious Whigs who supported the incredibly successful John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, Anne has left a legacy of scorn and uncertainty as rival nobles vie for power and the ultimate prize - to be the power behind the throne.
One man in particular, John Erskine, the Scottish Earl of Mar, has been (in his own eyes) particularly slighted. As the succession of George of Hanover draws closer and rumors and accusations of treason shake the Tory government to the core, John Erskine knows that sometimes the only way to survive is to commit treason.
And he knows just where to find support.
For nearly twenty years, the Scottish people have borne the brunt of William and Anne's wars. An unfavorable union with England has only resulted in disillusionment and exploitation. The Lowlanders and English don't even consider many of the Highland Scots civilized anyway. In their hearts their loyalty to the exiled James is still strong.
Return to a time when men were mighty, women were beauteous and cows were muckle heiry beesties which went Muuh!
Return to Scotland with the Pretender and win for him, His Crown.
