The Krivichi were a tribal union of Early East Slavs that in the 6th century settled in the upper reaches of the Volga, Dnieper, Western Dvina, their chief centres were Gnezdovo, Izborsk, and Polotsk. Located on the rivers that made up the main route between the Baltic and the Black sea, the Krivichi were doing well of trade and commerce. Along the banks of these rivers merchants from as far as Arabia and Scandinavia met local traders and craftsmen. The general population benefitted from the bustling commerce, as shown by the large farms, foreign goods and rich burialmounds that scattered the area.
