American English is filled with what I would consider spelling mistakes (because a lot of their spelling is based on the raw phonetics alone).
Learn British English, and its pronunciations then you'll see why American English is incorrect. Yes, I said it, it's incorrect. They pronounce 'stupid' as 'st-oo-ped' instead of the British 'st-ch-oo-pid'. The error in this is that the 'u' pronounces its name rather than its sound because it is followed by a consonant and then a vowel. The Americans completely ignore this rule, creating an irregularity.

    Two step solution:

    1) Watch a lot of American TV series that isn't dubbed (HBO got some really good stuff).

    2) Get drunk.

The second section is especially important because based on empirical studies I have noticed that Swedes tend to go from a Swedish accent to something far more American.

For reference this is a sober Swede:

There is no such thing as correctness when comparing regional and historical variations of a language. Languages are living things, and are supposed to change. Unless you would like to revert to a pre vowel shift pronunciation, that is.
