What´s the thing with anime and ridiculous teenagers , they always ruin the show for me .
The setting is a futuristic world devastated by alien attacks, and the last hope of mankind are these giant mechs which use a mysterious technology that can only be operated by a select few teenagers from all over the world who have the unique brain structure or whatever to integrate with the machines.
Looks like Power Rangers to me .

I love how 4chan describe this anime.

A character drama that pretends to be a mecha anime for its first half.

I don't think it is isolated to anime, coming of age stories are popular in just about any culture. I mean look at Super 8 or a lot of your recent British dramas like Merlin, Neverland, inbetweeners etc. People like watching teenagers, and that extends beyond I think the people who like watching teenagers in a socially alarming way. With Evangelion I think you get more of the classic coming of age story, and less gratuitous panty shots of high school girls you see in most anime today.

I'm only on the fifth episode, but this show is absolutely amazing. It's an old-style anime released in the nineties and has that "look" that older animes have such as Mobile Suit Gundam.

I can't say much else, but it's a fantastic show and is certainly not for children. Very mature.

It deals with a lot of issues and themes regarding people and how they cope with problems.

Going back to my earlier question, has anybody else seen this gem of a show?
Yes i seen it back in the 90s when i was a teen, and after that i recently re-wacthed. Yeah its considered a good anime amoung the genre.

Looks like Power Rangers to me .
It isnt, far from it actualy.
Aliens? you mean the Angels? i guess you can call it that, but litle is knowned about them.
eon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン Shin Seiki Evangerion?) is a Japanese media franchise created and owned by Gainax. Most of the franchise features an apocalyptic mecha action story, which revolves around the efforts by the paramilitary organization NERV to fight hostile beings called Angels, using giant humanoids called Evangelions that are piloted by select teenagers (of whom Shinji Ikari is the primary protagonist). Other works deviate from this theme to varying degrees, focusing more on romantic interactions between the characters, side stories which did not appear in the original works, and/or reimaginings of the conflicts from the original works.

i think this show is highly overrated but that doesn't mean I don't think its good. Some people act as if its gods gift to anime or that it's the greated show ever created, neither of which it is. Especially in original, unfinished form.

The annoying part is that this show spawned tons of copycats in anime and game. This show and Final Fantasy 7 combined pretty much wrote the endings and plot for 90% of JRPGs until today.

It is an insanely over emotional version of Mobile Suit Gundam style story of throwing teens in sucky situation which involves piloting giant robots into insanely emotionally painful battles. If they had thrown in a Char Clone character arch type, then it would of been a perfect Mobile Suit Gundam clone, just a darn expensive budgeted one. It's the quality of animation for it's day which really makes it stand out. Over all it's over rated.

Being almost done with the series, I'll have to say that my original synopsis

I'll ask again: if a gang-rape had started, do you think it would've been playfully incorporated into the show? Do you think the jokes would've kept flowing?

The #1 thing I hate about Evangelion is how there is no character development at all.

The only thing that happens is that Shinji gets progressively more annoying as time goes on however everything about him remains the same. I think its my tolerance of that character that just gradually decreases.

That is if any of the characters are really believable in the first place. Shinji I wish I could just take the EVA1 and freaking turn him into a pancake. Only anime I can compare how annoying the main role could be was Gundam Seed Kira Yamato, but... only in the later episodes of Gundam Seed, they were so overly emotional that they were not believable characters.

Shinji badly needed a Bright Noah to give him the mighty bright slap or ie "currection" as Bright would call it. ^^

Well, this is what happened when you let an emo kid piloting a bio-mecha and set him up of a role of savior; in 40K this type of characters only fit to be in penal legion.

On the other hand I am surprised no one cares master pieces such as Princess Tutu (yes yes, even I thought this series gay before I watched it... Boom, everything change after I watched it), Jormungand or Mawaru Penguindrum (my most favored and arguable best anime last year).

Did you grasp the plot? Shinji was called because he was the only one who could pilot Unit 01, because of
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Shinji's mother soul in it
, Gendo didn't want to see his son but was forced to call him because of this. Asuka could pilot Unit 02 for the same reason. So those were the only possible pilots. Kaworu
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
could pilot even without being in the entry plug because he was an Angel

They can't wait for the pilots to grow up because the Angels don't wait either.

So it's not a matter of choice putting the 14 y.o. as pilots, duh. It's the only way out for survival. At least get this plot fact right before mocking the show.

Also Shinji isn't Emo, he's a ditched kid in a post apocalyptic world forced (or guilt tripped due to half dead Rei) to fight to the death over and over again starting with no training whatsoever, against demi god beings while piloting another one, actually is sucessful at it despite the lack of training to be a pilot, and is enrolled in a social network full of mentally unstable people.

Did I mention the other pilots got a life-long training?

All of this with responsability that if he screws up in this task that he doesn't want to be involved with the whole mankind is dead. Yeah, totally sane mental stimulus so far.

Let me guess, you thought something like "he pilots a robot so coool only emos can dislike that lolo xDD"

Evangelion is one of the best animes I watched, if not the best one.

And after I finish the series, I'm starting End of Evangelion.
It got progressively more and more depressing because the head writer and show runner Anno-Sama (Hideaki Anno) suffers from severe manic depression. This series and in fact, many of the series he's run, are all reflections of his psychological torment, and inner feelings that the world is an empty bag of dicks and not worth anything.

It's quite darker if you look even deeper.

And on the series. I like it, it's enjoyable and for it's day, it was ground breaking. But there have been so many other series that honestly tell a similar type of tale with dark overtones that do it much better now, IMO.

Edit: And hellheaven, dude, Princess Tutu is amazing. Never gets enough love because people see the Moe characters and tune out.
