Default Scriptorium Summer Writing Competition Poetry Voting Thread

Here are the submissions for the poetry category. Please vote for your favorite one.

Also, bear in mind, anonymity is still required. Authors of any works below may not declare what submission may be theirs, or in any other way ruin the anonymity of theirs or another member's submission. Those found to be doing so here or anywhere else will be rightly and sneakily punished (You were warned when you submitted to this competition that if you screw up you will be publicly flogged and embarrassed). This thread is for discussion of the articles at hand and voting, NOTHING ELSE.

Pet Store Bird - Entry #1

    There he sat,
    In a store,
    Lively as he was.
Oh, how cute you are, little pet store bird!

    Saw you hopping,
    Heard you sing,
Never did I ask for more.
Oh, how precious you are, little pet store bird!

    I looked closer,
    Closer, closer,
    Deep into his eyes.
Oh, how keen you are, little pet store bird!

    Do you see?
    Do you think?
    Please, tell me more.
Oh, how mysterious you are, little pet store bird!

    Why in a store?
    What makes your value?
    Does it matter to you?
Oh, how human you are, little pet store bird!

    Here I am,
    And so are you,
    Plus the store.
Oh, how conditioned you are, little pet store bird!

    Time is money,
    Off I go.
    I will miss him.
Oh, you little pet store bird.

    Pirate - Entry #2
    Pirate
    Hey, ho, I'm a pirate!
I rape and I kill and I pillage
    cause I'm a pirate!
I take my men into the village
an' burn it down like a pirate!
    I drink an' I fight
    cause bein' a pirate's a delight
an' a pirate I'll always be!
    HEY HO!

    Hey, ho, I'm a pirate!
I shoot people down for lookin' at me
    cause I'm a pirate!
I steal all their gold an' hang 'em in trees
    cause I'm a pirate!
My ship, it's fast an' my men they are strong
    bein' a pirate's fun!
An' a pirate I'll always be!
    HEY HO!

    Hey, ho, I'm a pirate!
    I sail north 'n west
    searchin' for prey
    cause I'm a pirate!
    I take my sabre
    n' run in through flesh
    it's okay!
    Cause I'm a pirate!
    HEY HO!

    Unnamed - Entry #3
Unnamed Billowing sails set sights towards sea,
But faster still the winds carry me
To a world whose promise is to be reborn
A manifestation of my creation; Adorned
By my characterization. A perfect place.

Alas, A New World! A simple canvas.
No earthly lines constrict on mine designs.
    So I paint a village,
    A God blessed visage,
Our toils bring forth The Almighty’s Providence!

Alas, many fortnights of sea swell ahead of me
Only crossed sooner by my flights of fantasy.
Still this autumn voyage of the spring flower
Bears upon the most fantastic hour
When once my mind’s designs might be realized.

The Grey Glistening Road - Entry #4
The Grey Glistening Road Glistened the road did
    down by the bridge.
    Used to go play there
    when I was a kid.

    Still the road glistened,
    silver and grey,
    just like the clouds in
    this dreary old day.

    And glistend it did
    when father's car skid
    upon the grey road
    on which his car drove.

    But not on the track
did his car then go crash,
    but into a tree
    way off the grey path.

    This tree did not glisten!
    Was neither it grey,
    but black and some green;
    its colours more gay

    then gray thing beside
    now smiling with pride
    at its skiddidy work
to that old man's poor ride.

Note: Think of a Good Title for This - Entry #5
Note: Think of a Good Title for This
"Note: Think of a Good Title for This"

I’m not very good at writing poems.

If words were puzzle pieces, my page would be cluttered with shapes

like my dear Aunt Angela’s end-table, which is covered with fragments

of sunflowers and barns and cows.

I want to use rhymes but they slant

I rack my brain but I cannot

find the needle in the haystack

    (the haystack is my brain).

Where should I start new lines?
    Should one go here?
    Or maybe
    here?
This feels like as good a place as any.
    I can’t seem to keep
forms or stanzas in my head
    (impromptu haiku!)
My favorite poetic device is the gimmick

because it distracts from the core

    truth: I have nothing interesting

    to say

about sunflowers or barns or cows.
