Born in a Chinese Lowtown roughly corresponding to the area of former Guangzhou, Macau and Hong Kong, Bu was, as was everyone else in the Lowtowns, born in perpetual poverty and squalor. His father was a factory worker, and at the age of 4, Bu joined him. For the next two decades, he would slave away his childhood and adolescence in numerous factories, producing mechanical devices and parts in the most menial of fashions. Of course, the pittance he was paid was never enough, so Bu was forced to supplement his income by begging, pick-pocketing, and even directly stealing parts from the factory line and selling them onto the black market. It was this last action that first involved him the Triads - mafia organisations that had thrived in the crime-ridden Lowtowns, particularly in Asia. Thanks to Bu's great resentment of the IU authorities, whom he blamed (quite rightfully) for the downright painful and savage upbringing he had been subjected to, he eagerly jumped at the first chance he got to join a Triad.
The Triad he would join was called the 'Jìchéngrén de yuányīn' (Heirs of Reason), who had their origins in several survivors of the collapse of the Logos conspiracy. These survivors created the Triad in the hope of reviving and restarting Logos, but fierce competition from older Triads and the repression of the IU authorities meant the originally idealist Jìchéngrén quickly fell into line with its peers - nothing more than petty, organised criminals. The Triad's fortune had slowly declined ever since it's inception, but Bu brought in new life to the modest, decrepit Triad. Bu utilised his connections and friends across the Lowtown's industrial sectors in order to build up a large supply of stolen goods, which he sold for huge (and in many cases, total) profit onto other Triads, Gangs and Cults through the black market. These sales dramatically increased the Triad's income: allowing it to invest in recruits, equipment, and brand new ventures.
Over the course of a decade, Bu rose the ranks of the Jìchéngrén , thanks to his raw physical strength and cunning, intelligent mind. He soon became the most powerful and respected member of the Triad, and at the age of 38 lead a (mostly) bloodless coup over the old Triad boss - replacing him as supreme leader of the Triad. Under his leadership, the Jìchéngrén soon became one of the most powerful groups in the entire Lowtown - even able to stand up, to some degree, to the IU authorities. Now one of the most powerful men around, Bu soon fell into the traditional pastime of a man with far too much money and time: reading. He read up and inquired as to the history of his own Triad, and greater World and Chinese history. He eventually learned of the Logos conspiracy, and the stories associated with it: of Mao Huiqung's plans, and his supercomputer 'Confucius'. Bu become enthralled with what he intended, and he became convinced he was destined to do the same (except, you know, succeed) First things first, thought Bu, was to rebuild 'Confucius'.
He spent the next decade and half working endlessly, almost manically, towards building a new 'Confucius'. To begin with, he sent men to the remains of the Forbidden Complex, attempting to discover pieces of the old computer. After very limited success, Bu followed this with attempting to secure a team of scientists to build the new one, and rediscover the schematics and blueprints for the old supercomputer. Once again, after limited success, He dedicated most of his Triad's efforts towards building the supercomputer. It sucked up vast quantities of time, effort, and money, and the Triad's fortunes once more began to slump. Bu quickly became obsessed with the project, going as far as to rant and rave that he was 'Mao Incarnate' and 'God's Agent to the Recreation of his Heavenly Vessel'. Despite his increasing insanity, and ailing fortunes of his Triad, the supercomputer was finally finished in early 2261. Although finished in this case is a rather strong term though. Bu's supercomputer was nothing like the 'Confucius' of old: archaic, experimental, and downright dangerous. And so, predictably, when Bu turned on the computer, it quite literally blew up in his face.
The explosion destroyed his Triad's base of operations, killed most of his minions, and critically injured Bu himself. Both his arms were blown clean off, and had to be replaced with cybernetic equivalents. Most of his body was badly burnt, leaving huge, visible and painful red patches across his body and face. The rest of his body was also badly mangled, bruised, and scarred. In the aftermath of the explosion, Bu's Triad completely collapsed, his reputation and his fortune evaporated in the blast. He intended to quietly retire into solitary depression and meditation, but his plans were cut short by a visit from the Sage. He took pity on Bu, and told him about Operation John. Given an invitation to The Sage's underground refuge, he eagerly took up his offer, and was thus sheltered from the nuclear fire. He then proceeded to the Ark II, and has now spent the previous millennia or two in quiet, silent meditation, just as he intended back on Earth.
