OS = $100 so that gives $1000 in parts which is the sweet spot for bang for buck,

Great mid-range card, should keep you in the game (no pun intended) for 2-3 years and looking good, at a minimum. If you're truly looking to save, and don't mind bad graphics, you can probably stretch it for close to 5 and still play new games.

Final budget, not including OS is $995. You can knock the card down a little bit, or the cooler and free up some money if you want. If not, this is good bang for the buck.

thats just it though any combo deals, Mail in rebates, gift cards, instant savings will be long gone by the time he has money meaning this process will have to be done all over again. So yes still a waste of time.

he could but that would leave the old machine unusable, also depends on what 1 TB, some of the older hitachi drives are SLOW lol

it may not be broken it just doesnt boot, that tells nothing about the drive, could be the MBR is trashed, could be a error in some sectors of the disk that failed to get moved, both of which a reformat of the drive aka long format boot and nuke it but thats a discussion for another time. now if the drive is dead dead then yea no dice
