Default Surrealbelief's Roma Surrectum Videos and Commentary - 9/20/12

    Hey everyone,

I began a campaign for Roma Surrectum in honor of Rome II coming out. While this is probably a faction that has been overplayed, I haven't been back to Rome: Total War in many years. I'm in love with this modification and the work poured into it.

I'm no longer knowledgeable of the time period as I used to be, but I have a vague grasp of events. I won't mind if any of you provide suggestions or information about the time period. I'm going to be gathering my books on Roman history and preparing notes for my future Rome II campaign.

I am playing on a hard/hard difficulty, if you'd like to know. I'm not looking to read any guides, but rather play this as blind as I can outside of tips or suggestions.

Is this a proper pre-Marius format for my legions? I'd like to hear about any suggestions to formations or possible pre and post-Marius reform set ups for my legions. Thanks!

    1 General
    8 Polybian Cohorts
    2 Triarii
    3 Equites
    4 Velites
    2 Auxiliary Cavalry
    1 Mercenary

Anyway, here's episode one. Hannibal's Demise.

Episode Two: Dismissal of a Fool

    Episode Three: Chosen Battlefield

    Episode Four: Quelling the Rebellion

    Episode Five: Roman Bloodshed

    Episode Six: Sacking of Carthage

    Episode Seven: The Betrayal

    Episode Eight: Roman Anger Therapy

    Episode Nine: Iberian Offensive

Certainly close - the Early Republic consular army standard of 2 Roman + 2 Allied legions would produce a scaled equivalent of:

"Therefore I wanted to replicate the standard Roman Consular Army in a 20-unit army. With Polybius as my guide this would be:

    General; 4 x Republican Cohorts; 1 x Triarii, 2 x Velites; 1 x Roman Cavalry; 4 x Allied Cohorts; 1 x Allied Triarii, 2 x Allied Velites; 3 x Allied Cavalry; for a total of 19, leaving a slot spare for a unit of mercs or artillery perhaps."

That and other suggestions for later I have in the 3rd post here:

Winning the first battle against Hannibal is a really good start for the campaign, you managed it very well. Looking forward to episode 2 !

This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing. Where are you planning to expand to in your campaign? Going historical or wherever?

I'd like to know how he managed to get reinforcements that close without Hannibal ambushing them. After seeing the first video, it goaded me into trying a 1-turn campaign. With everything set up, I've attempted to recreate it, but somehow, I can't find a way of bringing in reinforcement without Hannibal getting the jump on them. Using my spy, I exposed Hannibal's ambush before I sent in reinforcements, but doesn't seem to work for me.

UPDATE: Ahh... after taking a second look, I see where I went wrong.

@Tar-Elendil - Hey, thanks! I may go historical, but that really depends on the state of my forces and the threats coming at me. I told my friend that this mod frustrates me in the best way possible. I honestly have to sit back and consider every option in battle and in strategy, which no other mod or Total War game has ever forced me to do. I'm considering doing a king of Senate format where my viewers can vote on what I do next, with me taking the dictatorship in situations of extreme duress.

@HunterKYA - I engaged Hannibal with my initial army, then withdrew from the battle so that Hannibal wouldn't be capable of ambushing my reinforcements. I just used the spy to see if he had any secondary forces and to reveal them to me.

I'm not criticizing, but I just find it weird for someone that seems experienced like you to get a lot of men killed because of the towers during the second battle in episode 2. I've lost so many men because of those towers when I first played RTW that even now I remember to stay as far away as possible

I'll probably opt for 4 full stack armies when I start my next Rome playthrough. It'll be 2 Republican armies and 2 Allied armies with:

    1 General
    10 Cohorts
    4 Velites
    3 Triarii
    2 Equites
IB:Restitutor Orbis Signature courtesy of Joar.

@Chico75 - I actually found that I made such a mistake to be pretty funny, so I'm not offended in the least bit. During that battle, I was playing with a wrist brace so my reaction timing was slowed a little. I honestly do think I make up for any silliness in episode three, which I found to be an amazing battle. Again I'll reiterate my love and admiration for this mod, for the amount of thinking it requires me to do before making a move. The battles can be slower, sure, but that only enables me to plan out different formations to use!

Episode 3 is back up, I had to re-upload it due to a frozen frame in the middle of a battle.

Not sure if you know by now but I just found out tonight in my own roman campaign, you can retrain as many units as you want per turn. The "once per turn" feature is for recruiting only.

I remember you being bummed about that and thought I'd share it.

Keep up the good work, enjoying all of your LPs.

@GaussSoldier - Thanks for the tip! Its unfortunately I had to find this out the hard way, but from episode four and onward, I do make sure to retrain my soldiers.
