Thread: KGCM won't work on Steam

Default KGCM won't work on Steam

I got M2TW and Kingdoms on the steam sale a few weeks ago. Played Stainless Steel for a day, but the turns taking 3+ minutes were getting on my nerves. I decided to try out Kingdoms Grand Campaign Mod. Downloaded, got my hopes up, but when I go to install, all I get is a message saying:

ERROR: Setup was unable to find valid Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms installation.
Kingdoms Grand Campaign Mod version 3.0 requires Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms
    Setup aborted.

If anyone has ANY tips of what to do, how to work around steam, and if anyone has dealt with this before, I'd be happy to take advice.

    Thanks

Also, I DO have Kingdoms installed, and everything is updated since I have Steam.

You are installing the wrong version of KGCM. You need to install the stand alone v4.3.

If nothing else works, you can try this fix I found online that someone else did:

"Ok, I've got steam version too and I really wanted to use this mod, and after a lot of digging and trial and error i found a way to make it work.

First things first, go into your steam/steamapps/common/medieval 2 folder, you'll see 3 .exes, a kingdoms, a launcher, and a m2. Create a new folder called backup (or whatever) and place the launcher.exe in that folder, then rename the kingdoms.exe to launcher. Once this is done, go into your mods folder where you installed kingdoms grand campaign and find the medieval2_kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod.bat (it looks like a window w/ a gear in it) and right click and select "edit" this should open it up in word/notepad whatever you have, in it you'll see something like "cd ..\..
    kingdoms.exe @mods\kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod\medieval2.kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod.cfg"

Ignore the first 2 parts, and copy the "@mods\kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod\medieval2.kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod.cfg"

note that this should match the correct path to your installation folder of the mod and the name of the cfg file located in that folder. Now, open up steam and go to your games tab. Find medieval 2 kingdoms, and right click it and go to properties. Under the general tab you should see a button that says "Set Launch Options..." click that, and in the blank field that pops up paste the "@mods\kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod\medieval2.kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod.cfg" with out the quotations. (again, make sure it's the correct path for your install, the example i'm giving you is my install path) and click okay and close out. Now, double click kingdoms in the game list and you will bypass the launcher and start a regular medieval 2 game w/ the kingdom mod enabled. Lot of work, but so far it's the only way i've gotten the mod to work for me. A downside is that you can't play the original kingdoms campaigns w/ out reverting the changes you made to the kingdoms.exe and bringing back the normal launcher, but then you can't play the mod so you're just gonna have to switch back and forth to play whichever one you want to. You also can't start a game from the medieval 2 game in your steam list, it will just hang up on load (again, this is fixed by reverting all the changes you made)."

My problem is that it won't install at all. I downloaded it, and I click the file I downloaded and the error comes up. I can't even get to the setup.

What is the name of the file you downloaded and the file that you are clicking?

First, for clarity's sake, have a clean install of M2TW and Kingdoms.

Now download the stand alone KGCM v4.3.

Now extract into another folder. I just made a new folder on my desktop and extracted it there.

Now go to the folder and open the installer.

Keep clicking next and doing whatever until you get to the install location. Make sure it is NOT C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod. This is the default and it's wrong.
Send it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War\mods\kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod

Once it's installed, go to the steam game library and right-click on Kingdoms. Go Properties.

Beneath "Enable Steam Community In-Game" you'll see "Set Launch Options." Click it, and put in: @mods\kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod\medieval2.kingdoms_grand_campaign_mod.cfg

Now go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War. You'll see an icon of a helmet called "Launcher." Remove it from the folder, you don't have to delete it. There should be another helmet icon named "kingdoms." You want to rename THAT to "Launcher."

Now go to steam and double-click Kingdoms.

    KGCM 4.3 should now work.

The stand 4.3 alone version is no longer available Is there any other way?

Does MTW2 need to be unpacked before installing it? My computer can't unpack it, and the unpacked files I download never work, so is there another way?

Sorry for the necro but I am trying to get the mod to work. I am using the steam version. Does anyone have a working link t the 4.3 standalone? because that other link is dead. I have also extracted the "Kingdoms_Grand_Campaign_M0.exe" (3.0) with universal extractor, However unpacked its only 300~ MBs from a 706MB download so I am assuming its missing something. anyone know what the registry address is that its looking for so I can just add it to the registry manually?

Try this link for an alternate 4.3 downloads location:

EDIT: I think I may have misunderstood your question. The standalone "one-file" version is no longer available. My apologies for not reading more clearly to see immediately what you meant.

I am absolutely new to M2TW, heck, TWO for that matter. & the only thing ive
ever even come close to being able to say ive modded was changing the
unlockable factions to playable on the imperial campaign.
With that said. I know no1s been on this forum in year but if someone ever
reads this and can give me "(how to download for the noobiest of noobs
and so easy a 5th grader could understand instructions on how to download
with step by step by step instructions, you would make this guy jump for joy)
Honestly though, youd make my Christmas Break!)
Well thanks for reading thus far, happy holidays!

    AugustineLewdlac,

Here is a link to a dropbox folder containing all of the files necessary for installing the mod (these are steam-compatible): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8xtbwuwx5i32v5y/rQH0pvfwtB

Download each of the .RAR files to a common folder, then extract them using winrar. You should then be able to run the .exe to install the mod.

There are also a couple of files to fix small issues. Instructions for what to do with those are detailed in this thread: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...download-links

    Hope this helps you out.

That is a godsend, thankyou (unrelated to the topic, but I had no working link to 4.2 until now)
