Default TATW: The War In The North

The War In The North Team, proudly presents,
The chance to reform the Great Realms of Angmar and Rhovanion, can you rule the north?

    Angmar
The realm of Angmar arose in the North beyond the Ettenmoors 1700 years ago. Its lands lay on both sides of the Mountains of Angmar, and there were gathered many evil men, and Orcs, and other fell creatures.
The lord of that land was known as the Witch-king, but it was not known until later that he was indeed the chief of the Ringwraiths, who came north with the purpose of destroying the Dúnedain in Arnor, seeing hope in their disunion, while Gondor was strong. For almost 700 years the threat lay heavily upon Arnor and as it split into three kingdoms and was weakened, from his throne in Carn Dûm the Witch-king plotted and organized its doom.
In 1974 Third Age the power of Angmar arose again, and the Witch-king came down upon the last Dúnedain kingdom before winter was ended and while a host of Gondor with the aid of the Elves of Lindon and Imladris so utterly defeated Angmar that not a man nor an orc of that realm remained west of the Mountains its intention was fulfilled.
The Dúnedain of the North appeared vanquished, the line of Isildur seemed broken and all of Arnor destroyed. From the gloom far off in Middle-earh Sauron was pleased.
Now the world is changing, Isildur's Bane is found. New in the very hour of Sauron's great designs the heir of Isildur and the Sword are revealed; and he goes to war, a great captain of Men and all men of Eriador has rallied behind Aragorn under the banner of Arnor awakened.
As the Witch-king command the forces of Mordor the Dark Lord has appointed other wicked servants to fulfill His scheme, one of his top lieutenants Agandaur has been sent north. To Sauron the tool of Angmar once more seems to be required, a mighty fist by which Arnor again shall be ripped apart and trampled into final oblivion.

    Rhovanion
Between the Iron Hills and Dagorlad, between the Sea of Rhûn and great Mirkwood the land once known as Rhovanion lie.
It has been the home of the Northmen since before recorded history in this part of the world. They were tamers of beasts and had learned the mastery of horses, and would often ride far afield as scouts and keep watch on movements of their enemies; and if the Orks dared to assemble in the open for some great raid, they would gather great force of horse archers to surround them and destroy them; allied to the Dwarves and united under mighty princes who from time to time joined forces.
In later days they often became the friends and allies of Gondor, praised for their horses, valour and the fearless spirit of the Northmen. With and in the service of the Dúnedain they defended against men of the East and even fought the might of Angmar. Mighty in lore are princes as king Vidugavia, grandfather of Gondors king Eldacar, Marhari who protected Gondor's rear in the battle of the Plains and Marhwini who with his éored took part in defeating the Wainriders at Dagorlad.
But the Great Plauge and the constant wars against the easterlings that by time came to bitter ends wained Rhovanions strength and at end the Northmen were enslaved or driven to Dale, Vales of Anduin or had migrated to Gondor. Éothéod, later known as the rohirrim, stem directly from Rhovanion and just as their kings descend from the kings of Rhovanion, so do all Northmen hold the memories alive.
And now the might of the Northmen again march out across the plains of their forefathers inspired by leaders who have not forgotten they are proud princes; raising Great Halls anew, archers mount and again the world will tremble under the armed weight of the Northmen of Rhovanion.

We would also like to proudly present a teaser of the units to come
    Princes of Rhovanion
Tall and fair the proud princes of Rhovanion once more lead armies across the vast plains of Rhovanion and into Middle-earth. These noblemens history goes far into the mist of history, long before Gondor came to the realm, and a warrior folk of old they have fought ainst whomsoever aggrieved them: Orcs, or Easterlings, with or against Gondor, or wild beasts, or not seldom their own kin, Northmen under other Great Halls and princes.
Now this mighty tradition have awakened as the leaders of the North once more has taken up the titles as is their by right and sallied the Northmen under their banners in Rhovanion's name. Clad in great armour and with fierce valour to be a heavy threat to any foe, upon praised steeds they are both skilled and fearless riders.

Its unlikely tbh, creating these 2 will be more than enough work It's likely that we will concentrate on just Rhovanion for the 1.0 release, but depending on the speed of various parts (coding, texturing) then maybe both factions will be worked on at once.

Glad to see the interest for this project

Now, concerning the Dale > Rhovanion situation I want to drop a question; how do people feel about the Athala Rangers?
How fond are you guys about them? To what degree do you use them during a campaign?

There's been roster discussions and I've been suggesting to replace the Athala Rangers foot unit all together with a mounted Athala Ranger unit, with AOR in greater area or not AOR at all.
Its's based on the concet that these gent's has outspoken keept their Rhovanion heritage alive - but in the sneaky way, since Easterlings been cutting their balls for ages, excuse my french. Now if Rhovanion is back they may do what they wanted to do all along; act in Rhovanion manners. Up into the saddle laddie! Since Athala Rangers been AOR they ought to be so little used anyway that it will not deprive the players from a favourite unit?

From the back story of these guys and the long distances in which they operate it would make sence that they are on horseback. On the other hand, defending settlements and in the dense Mirkwood they will be on foot. So have them mounted and dismounted

PS Are you devs aware of the recent RPG "The One Ring" part 1 "Adventures Over the Edge of the Wild"? It's set in Rhovanion few years after the Hobbit and can provide you with lots of ideas and inspiration. The next one will concentrate on Laketown apparently.

The units look extremely promising! Can't wait to see more! I like the way each and every small nobleman of this land calls himself a Prince of Rhovanion ^^ It explains much of why they spent a good portion of their time fighting eachother ^^
Also, i LOVE the Athala rangers, i love their look, i love the armor they wear, and their stats are alright. I'm not certain a monted version of them would have the right feeling. Are they still supposed to be silent and sneaky and wander around without being seen? Then why the horse? if they discard the whole ranger thing by fighting in the open, then, they're not the Athala Rangers any more... Horse archers can be a nice unit, i'm always jealous of those pesky Variags peppering my Earth Watchmen with arrows, but skirmishers are not rangers.

Will the Kingdom of Rhovanion include what is currently owned by Dale or will there still be two seperate faction?

I have deduced, from your knowledge of Middle-Earth background, that you read scrupulously History of Middle Earth. Given your close-minded opinion on various aspects of Tolkien lore in detriment of TATW interest and gameplay, I believe that
you are better suited to that reading activity, and suggest you go back to it.
I guess it could work for some guys with Battle of Middle Earth as well...

To clarify on the rangers, they wouldnt simply be the rangers on horses, they would get some serious model changes

    what about this:
since rhovanion horseguards are athala acording to the description --> why not have a melee cataphract horseguard + a archer cataphract horseguard

makes sence to me that some rangers would still use their skill with bows rather than switch to melee weapons only, but they also would be heavy units, that are no longer sneaky

    this looks very prominsing btw
