I made a list with the startegy games that I have played and know during this period.
Please feel comfortable to write down your game and opinion

    1) Centurion-Defender of Rome (Amiga 500/DOS) Probably the best game for his age (1990)

Centurion was a brilliant game, just to easy, chariot races was fun, getting whipped in the face, and trying to get his chariot to buckle on a rock made you feel like ben hur, plus the gladiator fights, were you could choose, buy and train your gladiator, brilliant game for its time, and two elements i think that may not make it into Rome 2, but would be neat

Battles were great, it was almost like a very raw Total war game, played this on the mega drive, even had ship battles then lol

An awesome scenario for CIV III

Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire
Under the patronage of Emperor Maximinus Thrax
"Steps to be taken in case Russia should be forced out of war considered. Various movements [of ] troops to and from different fronts necessary to meeting possible contingencies discussed. Conference also weighed political, economic, and moral effect both upon Central and Allied powers under most unfavorable aspect from Allied point of view. General conclusions reached were necessity for adoption of purely defensive attitude on all secondary fronts and withdrawing surplus troops for duty on western front. By thus strengthening western front [those attending] believed Allies could hold until American forces arrive in numbers sufficient to gain ascendancy."

I'm looking forward to AGEOD's Alea Jacta Est which is due around September this year. It might make the wait for R2 a bit less troublesome. The Paradox game EU: Rome Gold is also worth a look.

I'm not sure if you would call them simulations or strategy games, but there are five Caesar city-building games.

It definitely is. Its character system should be a guiding light for TW:R2.

I loved the PS2 game Shadow of Rome, it had some great moments and some the difference between the Campaigns (Action with Agrippa, Sneaking with Octavian) was a nice touch.

Oh and if we are counting City Building games, then Imperium Romanun/Grand ages of Rome (thats the sequel to IR) are great.

Rise and Fall: civilizations at war was not a game explicitly about Rome, but it did feature it and Julius Caesor. I find the game quite enjoyable, especially the naval battles are a work of art in my opinion. A word of warning though, as I found out the hard way, it is not playable on windows 7, and maybe Vista too. if you attampt to install it, it can (as it did with me) crash your computer. it works fine on XP though.

Actually it kind of baffles me how few classical era games there are. (especially the last 10 years). Surely the Romans are the most popular in that period of time.
