How many ranks fire?

Guys, i started playing this great mod and this question occured. I noticed that my troops can fire more that 2 renks.The 3rd and even some guys from 4 rank shoot. Could somebody please make it clear? Thank you in advance.

Isn't it based on individual line of sight? If a man can see his target, he will fire?

At max range, as in they are only just in the range of your unit
first rank will fire, maybe second if its close enouh
Third definately not and so on so forth.

But i do believe only 3 ranks actually fire no matter how close you get? i'll have to test this. i've only used 3 rank troops myself. bigger line is bigger ftw.

I think it goes like this:
First 2 lines fire when in range, rest are "fire at will" so they fire when they can see enemy (for example if unit is at hill, they are in staggered formation and can see over each others shoulders, and so can fire.
