The map is "finished"...! Sort of. It's still empty at places (and ugly), but I've added all the regions I found a Book reference for! Vegetation half finished and climates done.
I've already got offers for help, but my time will be limited the coming days. I'll probably try to get a team together to make this a "Submod"! If you're interested please send a PM.

Alright, with the help of Gigantus I could sort out the problems! We found that some of the gray pixels on Westeros were like 8,6,4, such not a shade of gray, making the map crash. Once that was fixed the map was ready for a startup!
And I also began adding regions, giving them all to Martell for once.
Here are some examples. I know the land still looks crappy at places, especially at shores and some hills are in the water, creating those nasty spikes, but that can be fixed later!
It would be already playable if I added new factions, the problem is that Essos is really BIG with rare settlements. I'll have to come up with some smaller settlements/castles between the free cities, or the map would be a pain in the ass to play.

Hi guys, inspired by the Essos Map projects I decided I wanted to learn some mapping and just did with the help of the utterly helpful Mapping Tutorial. I did however just copy my Westeros folder and started working in there, so what comes next takes place in a mod folder (with correctly changed .bat and .cfg files, of course.)
Now I wanted to be a smart ass and also I'm pretty lazy so I just copied all the .tga files from Westeros, made the world bigger and added Essos (which I didn't 'steal' but do myself).
Here's the outcome (low quality sampels):

edit: The reason I only used half of Essos in here is that there's nothing going on in the other parts. Yes, there is Quarth way down south-east, but between it is the Red Waste and it would only make the map incredibly huge to just reach one cool city. Also I cut the islands in the south-east off, because only ruins are there.
Alright, so far, so good. I always used the same size files for hights, climate, ground_types AND regions. When I reduced the map_hights.tga to minus one and half, it the Westeros regions-tga part fitted perfectly on the hights part. So no trouble there. All the other tga files were also done correctly.
Now, I gave Essos the Yronwood region colors, to start the game. Guess what: It doesn't work!
Since this comes directly after the resources (which the game ignores apparently), I guess it is the first Lannister settlement. I'm not using a program which shows me the lines, so I'm running blind here. When I double check a working-Westeros.log, I see the part where I get my two errors is empty. So I guess, once I cleared this one resource and the one settlement out, it should work...? Just I don't know which settlement it is, the resource I could figure out ingame with cursor_stat.[script.err] [error] Script Error in mods/World/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_strat.txt, at line 92, column 30
resource fish positioned on 105,195 which is an invalid tile.
[script.err] [error] Script Error in mods/World/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_strat.txt, at line 228, column 5
could not create settlement at script line 228.
And there's the problem. Why can't it create? The Westeros .tga files are exactly the size they were before, as well as the regions.tga. All I did was adding Essos there on the right.
Probably a small and stupid mistake, so help is appreciated. I want the satisfaction of getting it running.
PS: I did however already got it running in my MapClass folder (copied my map files to the folder the tutorial gives you). Also, there I only use ONE region for the whole world, with my town on Essos. And it works! The game starts. And I'm confused.![]()
