Default Cruelty or a tactical first strike

Depends on your point of view. I'm about to go republic so I decided to see what things I could do to weaken my soon to be enemies. I had Goto Island(Fukue) under siege. Saga dropped a stack off there and moved up next to the castle as my reinforcements, I was currently at peace with Saga.

Friendly fire incident. 0 casualties to me, 2275 to Saga.

I attacked and let Saga take the lead. I manually targeted my parrot guns as close as possible to Saga's troops plus a couple naval bombardments. Replay below if you want to see the carnage(the first half of the replay was pretty correct the second half was a little off when I viewed it, still a good show). I'm using the boshin total domains mod(Okazaki) which shows as choshu if you don't have it.

I then saw that Saga had another stack on a single ship presumably heading towards goto island. I loaded up my troops and attacked.

They ran but not far enough
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Now my forces are heading towards Saga's only province which is currently devoid of troops. I'm also boxing in some allied ships in case they turn on me right away.

I've stopped playing fots and went back to shogun 2. Recently in my hattori hard campaign, I had an awesome war against the homna, who had taken half of Japan!

They had launched stack after at me and I slowly gained ground. As I conquered all of central honoshu, I was fighting the northern front and conquered owari and mikawa.

Thats when I hit realm divide, so I had to send troops to the other front. I had 4 stacks of land troops, and one in the making. 2 samurai, the rest ashiguru. Anyways I had completely forgotten my navy and forgot homna. I had washed all their armies except Iwate and the provice below it. They also had their island, but I didn't worry about that.

My armies were struggling with the shimazu who had sent 4 stacks into my land. My trade routes had been raided and my trade was gone so I was getting about 100 koku a turn. I was just finished cranking out armies to finally crush the shimazu advance, so my defense was gone from the central.

Now with all my armies far away from home, homna sends 3 full smaurai stacks in an invasion of central japan.
I had to set up a rogue army stack with the ronin and ashiguru I had been collecting from the provinces just for emergencies.

They had a poor general with 1 loyalty, which made me very worried.

I'll talk about the rest of the story later as I have to sleep.

There were no betrayals , so I'll talk about the battle later maybe.

Can't wait to hear other stories.

The Saga case is a good example of why an AI can never beat human players. If an ally did that to a player in a battle, there'd be a lot of crying about a 'broken AI'. "And I had really good relations with them too!"

As to the topic question, I'd say it was both cruel and tactical :-) Directly and intentionally hitting the allied units in combat was a bit gamey too, imho.

I pretty impressed with tactic, its an "interesting" approach to say the least. If you plan on going Republic then its a good choice to make.

I myself prefer to get my "ally" into a war with someone on their border then sack their proviences while their in a death grapple with another army at the front.

I made a shortened video version of the friendly fire incident for those who don't want to watch the replay.

I hit legendary fame when I took Goto Island but I also have about 6 other provinces under siege. I figured I'd hit republic with a show of force.

Another thing I've done is cause all the provinces on Hokkaido to rebel. I kept one as a staging area and recruitment center. Shortly before I went republic, I sent a group around to each of the rebel provinces. I sieged then got them to sally against me, making sure that some escaped then I lifted the siege and moved on to the next province. Now I have one small group taking each of the now greatly diminished in strength rebel provinces on Hokkaido.

Technically we weren't allied. We were just fighting together against a common enemy but I got there first. Of course there is no diplomatic option to ask for direct help against a common enemy. If there was I wouldn't of been so nasty to them.

I've never actually fired upon and ally of conveniece, but I have let them pay the butchers bill in the battle before I engaged the enemy with my own forces. So that way their surviving forces would be in no position to challenge me for a few turns.

I wouldn't mind an having the choice of betraying an ally in the middle of the battle, that way it would be a pretty epic 3-way battle. But as it was already said the AI being able to do the same thing would make some people rage pretty hard, even more so on legendary.

When going republic I usually try to incite revolts in every nearby province to buy myself some time and space after I've broken with my faction.
