I for whatever reason do not like playing with BG's especially cav ones. In Vanilla I play with an archer corp even as orcs as it is really the only way to keep those damn Elves from butchering you. But I haven't played Vanilla since 1.3.

With RC I rely infantry a great deal with the Elves a few more archers, I like too run the hell out of my enemies before I engage with infantry as well.

I really like pure elite armies and in mid- till late-game I often deploy one or even two.
But in general most of my armies consist of militia with some special guys for the flanks or the centre according to the elite unit-type.
it is more or less like most medieval armies, a small core of professionalists with a huge mass of farmers in arms.

I want the best, and i always try to field complete armies. 1 full stack > 2 half stacks

    usually:

    4 archers
    4 cavalry
    4 heavy infantry
    4 blocking infantry (spears/pikes)
    4 cheap shock infantry

obviously, it all depends on which faction are you playing. anyway i don't like cheap steamrolling so even if i have the chance, i never field more than 4-5 archers and 4-5 cavalry

I usually throw up a cav heavy army with 4-6 archers and a few militia units to garrison, hold enemies in battles and taking out spearmen

I'm really not a fan of cavalry for anything except running the enemy down after the battle.

Heavy Cavalry can be useful, sure, but they really don't hold up well once they've expended the initial charge. I KNOW the point is to pull them out and keep hammering home with more charges, but I have more important things to focus on.

Being dwarves, we dont much care for horses. Only cavalry I usually ever have are if the General has them. Was thinkin of trying Rohan though.....

I can´t believe so many people do the BodyGuard Spam. Hopefully you are not the same guys complaining about economy. I usually just bring 2 FM per stack. Anything other than that I don´t like.

I sort of think this way too as managing traits is one of the best ways to get a booming economy later game. I downloaded a traits thing years ago I can't remember from where and tells you what and when too build and master trader is huge late game and more than pays for the bodyguard by itself. Especially in TATW where you get too keep the General for so darn long.

Depends on who I'm playing, but usually I'll have one or two stacks of elite troops to use as the main fighting force with like a stack in support for reinforcements and garrison duties. (Though things rarely seem to work out like this; especially with multi-front wars)

Oh and to add to the top, while playing as Mordor I'll usually gather up the nine into one stack (Supported by weaker troops to hold the enemy in place) and unleash them on my most hated enemies (They can instantly rout massive stacks of troops with their fear abilities; hell you could probably do this with four Nazgul).

I mainly play HE, so archers all the way. Any sort, not too fussy. Usually have one general, one cavalry unit, 2-4 infantry units, and the rest archer units. If I can, I like for at least two of those Archer units to be Imladris Riders, but that isn't very often.

When Third Age came out I had a flavour for archers and mainly played the two elfven races. After a while it began to be boring, watching the arrows to fly across the battlefield while doing nothing special.
So I started to play with Rohan and discovered my love for cavalary. Know I meet the opponent on the open field and charge him with brutal force... sometimes I even split enemy armies by doing skirmishing with cavalary-archers.

My basic army looks like this:
    1-2 General
    4-6 Melee Cav
    4 Ranged Cav
+ Random (depending on my finances)

NO WAY! It costs wayy too much to field an entire well balanced elven army. Plus i dont have like 20 eldar archers lol i usually go with 6 bow quendi 4 noritnerio warriors and like 2 eldar. and one general! I have other armies thats just my conquering one. I have an army of cav for running down bands of orcs that run into my territory and my garrisons are usually infantry.

You can say you like to play this way, and nobody will have the right to say you shouldn't.

But, really, it's just like using auto_win. No way. No AI army, save a troll/mumakil-heavy one, can resist an elven archerspam. I bet you win all battles with less than 100 casualities.

Depends. If i'm trying to expand, I use a militia-based army. If I'm trying to conquer (basically dismantle a faction) then I used the best troops I got.
I generally play as either Gondor or an elven faction, so naturally I have a core based around Heavy Infantry (though as Silvan elves I use heavy silvan archers almost exclusively once I can make an army of them, since theyre fantastic infantry/archers) with varying levels of spearmen (to defend archers/create a line for my infantry to flank around) and archers. I keep a few units of cavalry to chase down archers and retreating units or for quick relief to any units that are in trouble.

Against rebel armies yes BUT i usually play multiple battles in a row before i replensih so i lose more than that towards my last couple But I see your point. However, when i raid the Misty Mountains they ALWAYS have trolls! What do you play with?

whatever is in hand, but still always proportional to the faction i am using.

Eg: elves predominantly use archer armies with smaller cores of inf, while Isengard uses large infantry masses and very few, high powered archers. mordor can mass anything and add the odd troll to catch fleeing units and decimate cavalry. dwarves are the same as isengard, lots of inf and a few crossbows. harad, rhun and gondor are usually the same: standard mix of heavy or light inf, archers and cavalry, with the odd mumakil thrown in there for good measure

I tried all factions, except elves, OotMM and OoG. I don't like them. My favourites are Rhùn, Dale, Harad and the Dwarves.
