People have been talking about the need to implement a system reflecting skilled people for some time. I seem to remember we eventually decided on rolls at birth to determine whether a person is "skilled" but nothing was done. So I'm making this thread to suggest an idea of my own, and also to generate discussion to see if a better solution can be found.
So, if my idea is implemented, whenever a child is born, there will be a few extra rolls to see if they are skilled, what they are skilled in, and how skilled they are.
Roll 1: Skilled or not?
After all rolls have been done to determine that the child will live, this roll takes place, using a d20.
1-2: skilled in three areas
3-6 skilled in two areas
7-12: skilled in one area
13-20: not skilled
Roll 2: Skill areas
A d20 is then rolled for each skill area they get in the first roll to see what they are skilled in.
Physical (roll 1-5):
Duels
Jousting
Archery
Unarmed
Birth
Intelligence (roll 6-10):
Assassinations
Seige Battles
Income
Land Battles
Sea Captain
Charisma (roll 11-15):
Denouncer
Devote member of the Faith
Loyalty
Pillage
Misc. (roll 16-20):
Capture
Survival
Smith
Fate
Escape
The player may then choose one skill from each category in which they recieved a roll. A player may NOT choose the same skill twice - if the same skill area is rolled twice or more, a player must choose that number of skills from within that area.
Roll 3: Level of skill
For each skill decided upon, roll a d20 to determine how skilled that person will be in that area.
1-4: +3
5-12: +2
13-20: +1
Again, this is very much open to suggestions and changes.
