The Search for Brightroar.
The ancestral sword of house Lannister, Brightroar, was lost many years ago by king Tommen II in old Valyria. Turambar Lannister is going on a similar expedition to his predecessors, except he will not go unprepared. He plans to stop at Qarth where a certain red priest is known to make markings for people who sail past old Valyria. He has also heard shade of the moon helps when on such voyages, and so he departs for Essos on his ship, The Golden Lion. He knows the danger of such voyages, and has such taken the necessary precautions Incase he does not return.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.(WIP for now)
Turambar approaches the red priest of Rh'llor and takes her aside.
I need to get to get to old Valyria.
He whispered into her ear. He passes her a purse of Dragons.
Come with me.
she says in a rich accent. She leads him a small area of a temple with a stone marble table.
Lie here.
Turambar lay down, and the woman uttered charms over his body, and sang praise to her red god. She then began to paint symbols upon his body, in strange patterns and circles.
when Turambar came out, he had strange patterns along his face and chest. His lips were blue from the shade of the evening he drank. All of the otherbmembers of his crew had the same ritual done to them, and then they left for the docks.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.(WIP for now)
A storm was brewing overhead. That was never a good sign, especially now they were so close to Valyria.
Turmbar ordered the crew about on deck. The waves began to reach further up, and the ship began to sway violently. Turambar got below deck and almost fell, cursing as the waves came up around them. He sipped another cup of wine as the ship moved sluggishly towards it's destination. They were close, and they had not perished yet. Turambar smiled. Perhaps he would find the sword after all. It was close now, he could feel it. He could sense it nearby, and he would not rest until it is found.

OOC: I guess I'll take over here? The other mods are rolling elsewhere, so I'll take this one up myself.
IC: Dark clouds loom overhead, in fact it looks like the scattered handful of islands ahead are completely shielded from sunlight. The waves are getting stronger as well, and once or twice the ship is rocked violently. The crew are looking less and less certain of this expedition...

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
The men are growing afraid, so Turambar hands out rum and ale to calm their nerves. The ship rocks once or twice, but the sails are let down and the oarsmen begin to pull the ship towards the island, making the wind a less of a factor. The sea was still dangerous though, and as they neared the islands it got rougher. Turambar reckons they have no choice but to land on these islands, and the men prepare to drop anchor.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
The ship successfully docks in a small bay, though not without difficulty - and even more difficulty in actually getting off the boat, given the violent waves, the howling wind and the near-pitch darkness beneath the black clouds looming overhead. Though it was just afternoon, it already looks like midnight has fallen on this island and the others near Valyria itself.
As for the island, it appears totally desolate. The trees are blackened and dead, though they did make good torches as some enterprising crewmen found - no danger of wandering around like the blind any longer here, at least. There is no other sign of life on the island, not even insects or worms.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
Turambar loaded off the stores of food and water he had bought in Qarth, and he and his men moved further inland once they were ready. Turambar had found a small ruin upon a hill that provided enough shelter to set up camp. His prize was close, he could feel it in his bones. He just needed to get to the rocks... he saw them in a dream, big and black, sticking out of the ground like knives. he had seen some old bones lying upon them, with a gleaming sword next to it, still sharp after all these years. The sword of his house.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
It was fortunate that Turambar had brought stocks of supplies with him, as there were none to be found on this desolate island. Everywhere his men went scouting, the reports are always the same - dead trees, cracked and dried earth, sifting sands, shards of 'dragonglass' some the size of pebbles and some sticking out of the ground like great jagged swords, and countless skeletons, in the open and buried beneath the ground. Many bore marks of plague, others horrendous burns, some both.
It should be about evening now.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
Turambar sighed. so far the treatment he had taken had worked. He and his men took up shelter in an old ruin. they started a small fire that was shielded from unfriendly eyes by the small stone walls. This was going to be a long night.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
It would be a long night indeed. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes to hours, and still nothing happened, though Turambar and his men could feel something in the air - something unnatural. The night came, and the men turned in quietly for the night, with the exception of a handful of sentries.
Near midnight however, Turambar was shaken awake by one of the watchmen, a young man pale as a ghost, eyes wild. Even before he stirred, he could feel some overbearing dread, as though every nerve in his body was being overwhelmed in fear, and a powerful desire to vomit; it took him some effort just to repress the bile surging up his throat. Moments ago, he'd been haunted by a nightmare that he could no longer remember. "Sir, sir," The sentry hurriedly spoke, "Look up, sir." Overhead, the sky was still mostly black, but a deep red was burning in the sky and providing light (however terrifying & unnatural) to him, somewhere in the distance - doubtless, over Valyria itself.
That feeling of dread has not subsided, and is clearly affecting everyone - the sleeping Lannister men are getting up or violently thrashing in their sleep, and the sentries are wild-eyed, breathing faster and visibly shaking as they pace from post to post. Still, nothing (much less anything actually frightening) has appeared, so far...

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
Turambar woke up groggily, his head pounding, he felt like one of the sentries. He quickly grabbed some shade of the evening and he felt much better. Unfortunately, his lips had gone a pale blue, but it seemed to help so he had it passed around the camp. meanwhile, he stared up in awe at the bright red sky, it must be a sign. It reminded him of fire, and the Targaryens. The sword was close. The question was, would Turambar be the only man to see it?

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
The shade-of-the-evening, at least, helped in soothing Turambar's nerves, and those of every man whose lips touched it. The feeling of overwhelming dread had mostly dissipated after just a few sips, and he could now think clearly.
One of the men looked up from his shade-of-the-evening, instead pointing at the burning red sky over Valyria and crowing, "What in the seven hells is that?"
Another sentry, disregarding the man's at-present unanswerable question, instead asked, "What's our next move, ser?"

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
We move forward
Turmbar spat into the dirt and pushed himself off the ground, he chewed on some stale bread and drank a cup of water to satiate his hunger. he waited until the men had ate, then they began to move towards where he had seen the rocks in his dream - Conveniently near the red sky.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
As the party set out, they ran across...something rising out of the ground. Humanoid yes, but blood-red all over, almost like the flayed man featured on the Bolton arms, with long spindly limbs and flaming hair - no, hair made of actual flames that reached its back. It raised its face, a featureless mess save for one wide line from ear to ear (resembling an inhumanly wide grin) and two bright red eyes, toward Turambar and his party, but otherwise made no move.
The men, understandably surprised and frightened at this monstrosity's appearance, do not advance further, instead waiting on Turambar's further directions.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
Turambar stopped and looked at the creature, surprised and disgusted by it. the marks on his body shone, and it seemed that they were designed to help protect against such a danger. He drew his sword and slowly strode over towards it.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
The being stood still as he approached - then, suddenly, it surged forward with inhuman speed, skinless hand outstretched toward Turambar's throat, red eyes burning with malice, mouth opened into a demonic grin revealing double rows of teeth sharp as Valyrian knives. Turambar would have only seconds to react...

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
Turambar levelled his blade at the creature and shot an evil grin. He pulled out a pot of wildfire from his pocket, readying to douse the creature in its boiling flame.

Re: The Search for Brightroar.
Just as the demon came within inches of Turambar, it disappeared, as though it had never been there in the first place - it appears it was just an illusion. The winding path back to the ship seems clear now, though the same feeling of dread had returned in full force, becoming almost palpable in the air, and this time no amount of shade-in-the-evening could remove it...
