    Default 900p vs 1080p

I've recently been looking around for a new laptop and I've settled on two but I'm still not quite convinced.
They are exactly the same exact one has 900p and the other is 1080, both screens are 17.3. They both have the same video card, processor etc but the 900p has one more gb of dedicated ram on the video card.

So what I really want to know, is the difference in resolution going to be huge? I'm leaning towards the 900p for the extra dedicated ram and a slightly lower price but it seems like a really strange measurement, and one I've personally never actually seen before.

I don't think you'll notice a difference. 99% of the time the naked eye won't be able to tell the difference on that small of a screen. Even if you were buying a 32" TV I'd say it would be a waste of money to pay for 1080p as you're most likely won't be able to tell the difference due to the small screen size.

Eh, what? 1900x1080 is best on a 24 inch screen. What I do agree on is that he won't notice the difference on his smaller screen.

You'll get better performance with the 900p, and likely won't notice much of a difference at all, with that screen size.

    you will notice a difference.

Actually the ppi of a 17.3 screen at 1080p is quite low.

    1080p - 128 ppi
    900p - 106 ppi

    mbp 13 - 116 ppi
    sony vaio Z2 - 169 ppi -> that is a monster!

    see how low that is?

what notebook are you going for?

I can advise you better, since its looking like a budget 17, like the dv7, lenovo z something, or even the m17x

Another thing to consider is that the screen quality of the 900p screens at 17'' are terrible, and the 1080p are alright. There is a 90% gamut glossy display being offered, but that is only found on the clevo/sagers for now, and there is the dc2 which is one of the best displays out there, mobile or not.

I'm going for a Dell XPS17, the specs are surprisingly good actually. The screen is easily the weakest part, it's one of the better ones I've seen at a reasonable price so I'm willing to sacrifice a little screen quality for a better machine over all.

ouch the specs arent good, specially if you account the price how much are you going to pay for that?
and the screen on the xps 17 is one of the almost average out there

I've got a 1080p monitor 27" and it can look a bit pixilated at times (no issues when I had a 24").

(only reason its 1080p is I use it for 3d)

It's on clearance for around 1100, though I'm not sure the full cost of the warranties, shipping etc
The problem with laptops is there's a huge divide between specs and price, anything better with better specs has been around two grand or more.

I'd love to just build a desktop but sadly that's not feasible for me at the moment.

    Glossary and Explanations

    Glossy vs. Matte Screen

Matte screens have an anti-reflective coating. Glossy screens generally offer more contrast and colors are more vivid. They do however produce more glare. Some people like them, others do not. The glare problem is most acute in well lit environments, like an office. Glossy screens tend to be better for multimedia uses like viewing DVDs or photos. If you are unfamiliar with the screen types, we would highly recommend you check some of each type out before you buy. The screen is one of the more important parts on a notebook. You don't want to get stuck with something you don't like.

    SSD (Solid State Drive)

A solid state drive is a flash based storage device which uses non-volatile NAND memory chips instead of the traditional mechanical rotating disk and reading head. This newer technology drives perform much faster since they dont need spin up. Think of it as using your RAM as your hard drive. It consumes less power since there are no mechanical moving parts, this in turn also gives SSD's the advantage of running cooler. They are also impervious from damage by vibration, shock and magnetism.

The downsides compared to a traditional HD is it lacks storage capacity and the cost is much higher per GB.

    Screen resolution

If you are unsure of what to purchase, we would highly recommend you check some notebook screens before you buy to see what you like. You may also wish to take a look at the notebook screen guide for more information.
    Netbook resolution: WSVGA
    Actual resolutions: 1024x600 and 1024x576
Offered on Netbooks 10" and smaller
Netbook standard resolution. This is the lowest resolution available, and is designed to easily read text and icons on smaller-sized netbook screens. However, this leads to a somewhat “crowded” display that can generally only handle one visible window at a time. Typically not available on larger machines.
    Standard Resolutions: WXGA, HD, 720p
    Actual resolutions: 1280x800 and 1366x768
Offered on larger Netbooks and Notebooks up to 16"
Lower resolution screens offer big text and icons that are easy to read. Less stuff fits on the screen, which translates into more scrolling. Multiple windows can be worked with, though they may have to overlap some.
    Midrange Resolutions: WXGA+, HD+, 900p
    Actual resolutions: 1440x900 and 1600x900
Offered on all Notebooks. Keep in mind text will be very small on a 12" WXGA+ notebook.
A set of in-between resolution options that are found on some machines. Considered base resolution on 17" inch and higher laptops. Text and icons are smaller than standard resolution screens, and more windows fit onto the screen. These resolutions are very good for working with multiple windows side-by-side, without having to overlap them.
Maximum Resolutions: WSXGA+, WUXGA, FHD, 1080p
    Actual resolutions: 1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 1920x1080
Offered on Notebook 15" and larger
On these screens text and icons will be very small. Text can often be hard to read, though some do like it. A very large number of windows fit on the screen, and there will be little need to overlap any of them. Max resolution screens are good for applications that require high detail (CAD, graphics editing, etc.)

    Typical Definitions of Refurbished Notebooks

Refurbished notebooks often come at significantly lower prices and are generally covered by warranties by Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Lenovo generally has a universal 1 year warranty, while Dell has standard 3 on their business lines and 1 on consumer laptops (all extendable). HP offers a choice of 1 or 3 years. Other stores like Tiger Direct only offer 90 days. These laptops are in conditions ranging from being never powered on to scratch and dent (but still fully operational).

    Refurbished:
Laptops that may or may not have been powered on.
Laptops that may or may not have the security seal of the box broken.
Laptops that may or may not have been used.
Laptops that may or may not have minimal cosmetic "scratches".

    Redistributed:
Laptops that where ordered and never delivered.
Laptops that where place on order but never shipped.
Laptops that where ordered but then canceled and never shipped.
Laptop is new and sealed in box.
Laptop has never been turned on.
    Security seal is not broken.
    Laptop is in mint condition.

    Scratch & Dent:
    Laptop has been turned on.
    Laptop has been used before.
    Security seal is broken.
Laptop may have noticeable cosmetic dents.
Laptop was fully restored to manufacturing state.

    1) What is your budget?
1100-1200 not counting warranties and whatnot.

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?
    At least 15, though I'd prefer 17.

    3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
    Canada

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
    Not really

    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
    I'd much rather not.

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

    Photo editing and gaming mostly.

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

I'll mostly be using it at home.

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?

A wide variety really, most would fall under FPS or RTS though.

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Battery life doesn't matter too much as I'll usually have it plugged in.

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

Buying it online is usually fine.

    11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

    Windows 7 is preferable

    12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read. Click here for Screen resolution information.

1366x768 would be the lowest, I'd much prefer 1080p though it isn't necessary.

    13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?

I'd prefer the glossy but it doesn't make a huge difference to me.

    Build Quality and Design

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

Somewhat, performance is the number one priority though.

    15) When are you buying this laptop?

As soon as possible really, I'm hoping to have it ordered this weekend or sooner.

    16) How long do you want this laptop to last?

I suppose as long as possible, 2 years would be the absolute minimum though.

    Notebook Components

    17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

The bigger the better, any less than 500gb could be problematic however. I don't really need/want an SSD.

    18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

    CD-R/DVD-ROM yes.
If it's too short notice don't worry about it, thank you very much for the offer to help regardless though!

    Default Re: 900p vs 1080p

nah it isnt, Im only going to put those available right now

    here we go

there is the hp dv6t or the dv7t, they come with the gt 650m, and 1080p res.

Clevo w150er sager np6165, they are the same model and you can contact several resellers like xoticpc, mythlogic, malibal, powernotebooks, lpc digital, gentech, rjtech

they offer the same package as the hp ones.

at xotic you can choose the msi force 1762 of the force 16f3, both are barebones models from the gt 60 and gt 70, they come with a 670m (much better than the 650m, despite being a fermi rebrand of the 570m with an overclock), this is the best that you can get in terms of power

you could try to get the np9130, but if Im not mistaken it goes by the 1100 already, and you should count the OS, thus another 80 for that, but it comes with essentially the same components as the msi ones.

One important thing, I would keep everything stock in those last 3 that I mentioned, since you are into photo editing, the 95% gamut screen upgrade might make a big difference for you, its a fantastic screen, its used on those models and the dell xps 15 (raving reviews, its the glossy version though), w520 and m4600, both are matte.

The difference in terms of the gt 555m that you would get in that xps 17 is quite great, bordering 35% compared to the 650m, if you are comparing it to the 670m its almost 100% improvement, if not more.

And sincerely the best screens are in the 15'' 1080p range, if Im not mistaken the gamut color of the xps 17 is 60% ish, the contrast is also low.

If you can raise your budget a little bit more, you can get the 7970m in the np9150, its basically a 7870 in a portable format, it will be 120% better than the 670m, leave everything stock you are hovering around 1500

Oh man that's a brilliant site! I'd never even heard of it. After I poking around I think I'm leaning towards the Sager NP9130 with a few upgrades, the only advantage I could see on the NP9150 is an upgradable video card but the prices were kinda steep. Other than the video card are there any inherent advantages to the NP9150? I hadn't even heard of these brands before but they seem awesome. I really owe you one for this.

Edit: Ah, I have however encountered a hiccup so to speak. I didn't realize they're entirely in America, which does pose a problem as I really hate the idea of ordering something so expensive and having it go through customs (especially with the warranty being on the other side of the border too. I'm gonna look around for a Canadian site that offers the same brands.

Edit again: Actually nevermind turned out to be a non-issue, a site called reflexnotebook.ca seems to offer more or less the exact same options and selection.

yes reflex notebooks is a canadian reseller.

malibal offers especial warranty for canadians as well.

the np9150 is the same chassis as the np9130, the added bonus is the backlit keyboard and the rubberized finish. You can go and buy afterwards a 7970m, however you are going to need to buy the higher wattage psu as well, and the backplates for the card, the card retails around 500 if you dont buy right now, plus the backplates and the psu this thing should turn out to be 600 in total. And no mobile cards dont fall on price, they keep their value, they just stop making those. For example while its easy to find used cards from past years like the 5870m there are no new ones available as easily as there was, not that it was that easy btw, you have to buy from reseller or from ebay, since usually dell cards dont work that well with clevos.

What are the upgrades that you are adding?

I would go for the following config

CPU: i7 3610qm no need to go higher
RAM: 8gb is quite enough, and ram speed hardly matters
HDD: up to you, if you are going for a hybrid I advise against it, if you want a SSD, I would advise to buy it yourself, samsung 830, crucial m4 and intel 320 are the best out there, and are ordained in terms of speed, any sandforce controlled SSD is usually going to give you more headaches than anything, not worth it.
ODD: up to you as well, they usually sell a ODD caddy so that you can put a 1tb HDD in there
WiFi: I like the intel 6300, clearly not a mandatory upgrade, but Im always mobile, for me the extra range makes a difference
Screen: its up to you, I already said that the 95% gamut screen is the 2nd best out there, only being surpassed by the dream color 2 from HP, but its unfair, thats a IPS panel that rivals even the nec ones in terms of quality, this aint your garbage run of the mill low contrast screen that you find on laptops or even monitors, its a great screen.
GPU: the 7970m is a beast, check the 7870 reviews, afterwards check the gtx 560 reviews, for the former you lower 10 fps or less, for the latter you remove 10fps or more. While the 675m is based on the 560 ti, only if you overclock to its speeds (quite possible) you can achieve that, however go for the safe bet and go for the 560 the common one. For the 670m go for 560 and remove 20 fps

this should come around 1600 bucks, 300 more that you wanted to spend. That is with the 7970m, and the screen upgrade.

there is a site called notebookcheck.net PLEASE LOOK IT WITH A HUGE SPOON OF SALT, NOT A GRAIN, NOT A PINCH, BETTER YET A SEA OF SALT, THINK SALAR UYUNI kind of salt. They have a comprehensive list of mobile gpus, CHECK THE RESOLUTIONS, YOU JUST NEED TO HOVER THE CURSOR OVER THE DETAIL SETTINGS, it shows the res, the level of detail and eye candy applied.

that will give you some idea on how mobile gpus behave, and you will see how a 7970m is basically equal to 2x 485m.

the 485m is the same as the 580m and 675m

I was planning on what you just suggested for the most part but in regards to the HDD I'm just going to go with the 750gb. The video card is a bit of a dilemma however as the only available upgrades are the 7970m (Which doesn't appear to be available for a few weeks) and the 675m. I think I may just stick with the 9130 after all, they don't offer upgrades for the video card but the 7970m was 200 dollars more as that's getting a little up there. What it really comes down to if I get the full three year warranty as that drives up the price but I'm not totally sure. I believe I shall sleep on it.

Thank you very much for all of your help though! My eyes have been opened heh.

+Rep for your help and thank you once again! I may have ended up with a considerably worse machine if not for your advice.

the thing about the gpus is what I told you, the 7970m are arriving at 20th of may, the eta is like that because there was a massive pre ordering. AW is already sending machines with it.

I know about the cards, because people got some contacts within aw at the notebookreview forum, and they have been testing those quite extensively, it is really one hell of a card. The OC that we got so far is stable at the 7870 clocks, which means 150mhz on the core, and we jumped the vram to 1500mhz, they have pushed for more, but so far they had to deal with hacked drivers, AMD havent even released the oficial ones, and the ones being sent with the aw are the 11.5 or 6 drivers cant remember the number right now, we have been using 12.5 beta hacked drivers for the card. Its scoring around 7k on the gpu only in 3dmark 11 with the 7870 clocks.

Nvidia will launch the 680m a true kepler card, we dont know when, we also dont know how it will perform as well. We are currently speculating that it would be either the 660 ti or the 670, sincerely Im hoping for the latter, and truth be told I dont have a color preference, in the end its all brown when you mix that! If its truly based ont he 670, waiting for the 680m with the np9130 and purchasing the gpu latter would be a costly but good decision nonetheless.

We are expecting retail prices for the 680 to be 2x as much as what the 7970m costs now, and if history is true, we are going to be right, so it would cost around 800-1k again to get one of these cards solo without a notebook.

One interesting thing that might spark you some interest due to the warranty and all other stuff, mythlogic is a clevo builder, not a reseller like most that i posted, they get the barebone and put their hands to build it up to your specs, it wont come from the sager or eurocom factory like the rest of the resellers.

The CS from myth is splendid, and they have a program called phoenix, if you purchase lets say a np9130 from them and you want to upgrade to a 680m, they will charge you 5% over the price that they payed for the card, if you want they will service the laptop installing the gpu or other components that you want, the case will be clean and if parts are broken fixed.

They are pricier than the competition, however they are the ones building, repairing, upgrading it wont be sager or eurocom.

unfortunately since you are in canada (well I like canada more anyway, there should be some nagging issue with the country, i.e. pc prices), myth wont cover accidental damage, like they would in the US

another thing take a good look at this

While the 7970m does seem great, I think I may just stick with the 9130 which doesn't have an upgradeable video card. I can put the funds towards the improved screen + a little more ram. I'm fine with missing out on a few bells and whistles. Though is there any actual difference between the 670m and the 675m?

I did check out Mythlogic before though for something worth this much I'd rather not risk it getting caught up via the border, add on the fact I'd have to send it across the border both ways if anything goes wrong and it just doesn't seem worth it. I wish the Canadian resellers had the US prices though, these prices are getting a bit brutal.

675m is a 580m rebadged, as I said to you before there is a 20% difference between that and the 670m
