Jest aside, it is true that Tolkien considered the Silmarillion his main work, and the Hobbit and LoTR lesser- sometimes almost a distraction from his fiddling with the details of the grand history. And in that were contained his four major stories; The Lay of Leithan (Beren and Luthien), the Narn i Hin Hurin (Chrisopher Lee reads it excellently BTW- it is on youtube), Tuor and The Fall of Gondolin and the Story of Eärendil. So Gallus was very close. He can ask the next question while Ngugi goes to Spritbolaget to spend SKr 1500 on a crate of beer ;-)

This is difficult- at least I think so. And the answer is in one of the HoME volumes. I learned of it today (I learned a lot about Tolkien over the last two weeks or so, something I thougth was not possible), and I like it so much and want to share that thought. Hence I ask it, not because I want to show off, yesterday I did not know it either.


When Celegorm and Curufin usurps power in Nargothrond, it is of course terrible. But originally it was meant to be much more of a betrayal; how and why?

In the Quenta Orodreth, Celegoem and Curufin are firm friends, enough that he gets a ride on the Teleri ships with them after The First Kinslaying. His home is thus theirs and he trusts them, yet they stab him in the back.

I wish this had been kept. Orodreth in the Sil, UT and Narn looks like a weak pushover.

I never understood why he just let Celegorm and Curufin take over. It's no wonder Curufin called him a dullard.

I think that is how everybody feels, I always wondered nat the small loyalty of the populace. First them, then Turin (though Turin and his charisma and feyness were difficult to withstand).

If they were close friends it would actually explain how it could happen so easily.

Well, I don't know where Mac finds this stuff, but I suspect the question as it stands cannot be answered. I might be wrong of course, but "How did Christopher Tolkien discover who was behind the Father Christmas letters?" is likely more accurate.

From memory; He stubbed his toe one night while sneaking the letter in its place and they heard him cursing in a way and voice that only their father would.
