Why can I only give myself Reputation?

I noticed while scrolling through a couple of threads that the little green + button that reads 'Add to [username]'s Reputation" only appears next to my own posts. Surely that is the opposite of how it is supposed to work? Am I even supposed to be able to add to my own reputation?

You can't add rep until you get so many posts.
And when the buttons next to your posts you can check the rep that has been given to the post by clicking that button.

I okay. I never dared to click my own rep button for fear of being banned. . I thought it was just there to tempt me.
