Thread: The Curia (90 BCE)

    Valerius stands.
"Sextus is being given the command in Africa. However, unless Consul Aquila would like to lead, then I will take command of the Thracian command. Consuls have the first right to choose command, and as things in Italy have calmed down, I believe I will be successful in leading Rome's forces in Greece."

Before leaving, Sextus makes a plea to the Curia.

"Senators! Soon I will depart for Africa, and then I will not be able to contact you. So, before I leave, I must ask of you a final thing. I fear the Numidians may be planning to besiege Carthage. If this comes to place, the city will be cut off from suppy. To prevent this, I ask for the aid of the navy in supplying Carthage. If we have ships carrying food and weapons between Carthage and Sicily, then I will be able to hold out forever. If you would grant me this, then you are saving honest Romans from a harrowing death at the hands of roving Numidians. With my supply lines secure, the advance into the desert would be much more effective."

"I will take the command in Thrace if you insist that a consul must. I have a... personal... score to settle with them. However, I still support the appointment of Corelis as Proconsul of Graecia. And... I also believe a naval force in Carthage would be extremely useful, but I don't believe the Numidians have any ships. Would our money be better spent on land forces? Perhaps... But you have been given money to do with as you see fit. I trust your judgement, Tuccius."

    Valerius repsonds
"The republic can send some ships to Carthage if Sextus feels it is needed, we have 40 ships in the Eastern Mediterranean. Perhaps 10 quinerremes and 10 liburnas should be plenty for Africa. If you need more you can either use your own fleet or petition the Senate at that time. "

"As for Thrace, It is Aquila's right to take command of the forces in Thrace. However, there is no reason for a co-command, and it fairly insulting to give another senator equal imperium as a Consul"

    Lex Bellum Thracia
-Consul Gaius Marius Aquila shall take command of the legions in Thrace
-After this year Gaius Marius Aquila will have imperium in Grecia et Asia as Pro-Consul until the Thracians are suppressed.
-Lex Bellum Thrax passed in 91BC is hereby revoked.

Also, Corelis Loquitur Solus Danius, know that if you take a position on Aquila's staff you will not be eligible for an office in Rome, and no more than a Tribune of the Soldiers salary

Agreed on the proposal, however I support that Corelis stays in Rome.

Consul Aquila can take any senator he wants on his staff if that Senator wants to leave. There are no vetos on this matter, and no laws preventing him. However, he did run for Aedile this year, and the People of Rome would be very disappointed if he ran off for war without meeting the office's demands.

Dear Senate and People of Rome,

With the forces already here in Carthage, I have driven off the entire Numidian army from the walls of Carthage. We have taken few losses, but our foes have fallen by the thousand. Although our corwardly enemies have damaged parts of the city via sabotage, the harbor remains functional. I will regroup and await the reinforcements you are sending before following the Numidians into the desert, where intend to destroy them utterly and make their entire nation subservient to Rome.

I propose the recruitment of a pro-consular legion in Africa as reinforcement and funds for replenishment.

If any region needs a proconsular legion it is Gaul.

    Lex Legionnaire Gallia
-A proconsular legion will be recruited in Gallia for 20,000 denarii, with the rest being paid with left over finances by Maximinus Regulus XVIII (to be named be Regulus)
-Legion XIX Gallia Maximinus will be paid for be the Senate at 30,000. This legion must be kept in Gallia unless directly ordered to move by the Senate.
