Default Moscow clashes at anti-Putin protests

There have been reports of new clashes in Moscow between protesters and the police. There have been protests before in December last year and in March, however I doubt that will change the fact that Putin will be sworn as president once again.

Left-wing activist Sergei Udaltsov has reportedly been arrested

Protesters against Russian President-elect Vladimir Putin have clashed with police in the capital Moscow, ahead of Mr Putin's inauguration on Monday for a third term.

The protest was peaceful until a small group of demonstrators tried to break through the lines of riot police.

Reports say opposition activists Alexei Navalny, Sergei Udaltsov and Boris Nemtsov have all been detained.

A rival demonstration in support of Mr Putin has also been taking place.

Organisers said about 20,000 people took part in the opposition march - to an island close to the Kremlin - although police put the figure at about 8,000.

Police have been blocking the protesters from crossing a bridge over the Moscow River.

Clashes broke out when more people crowded towards the bridge and riot police wielding batons pushed demonstrators back towards the rally site, witnesses said.

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg, who is at the opposition march, says protesters launched a sit-in by the police lines.

They were refusing to leave unless Mr Putin's inauguration was cancelled. They were also demanding an hour of TV airtime and new elections, our correspondent says.

Dozens of protesters are said to have been arrested.

TV images then showed police storming the stage of the rally where left-wing activist Mr Udaltsov had been addressing protesters, and taking him to a waiting vehicle.

Before he was seized, Mr Udaltsov had called for the inauguration to be cancelled and said through a loud-hailer: "We will not leave."

The crowd chanted back: "We are the power."

Russia's Interfax news agency later reported that Mr Navalny - an anti-corruption blogger and nationalist - had been arrested and Dozhd TV tweeted that liberal politician Mr Nemtsov had also been detained at the rally.

So ok there are protests. And you have a point to posting this other than showing us there are protests in Moscow?

    Good for Russians. ACAB!
Lets hope next time they'll march into Kremlin and bring back the Red Flag and remove the Vlasovite one.

Surely they should go to the Winter Palace in St Petersburg though if they wish to re-enact the October Revolution

From his own OP "however I doubt that will change the fact that Putin will be sworn as president once again."

    I don't think he's asserting a Russian Spring.

It just shows that people are unhappy with him, but in the context of previous protests over the past 5 months it does suggest that opposition has grown but it still won't be enough to stop Putin from being sworn in as President

Oh no I was just wondering what to discuss about it Babur....that's kind of the point of this forum.

Well seems like Russians have right to protest. Good for us, couldn't say that 25 years ago. I agree these protests did infact occur. Now someone needs to have balls and charisma enough to actually make a legitimate opposition party. Were a large country 140 million people. Surely there is somebody that can galvanize a chunk of the masses into an opposition party.

BTW Volkh (still call you by your old name) That is not the Vlassovite flag that is the Peter the Great flag. To insinuate that the Peter the Great tricolor is a treasonous flag is ....whats the word I am looking for? How about ridiculous?

Looks like Soros is opening up the checkbook for the Russian commies with the Middle East is in ruins and his puppets in Ukraine overthrown.
It just shows that people are unhappy with him
Majority don't support these clowns protesting even if they are unhappy with Putin. There are large counter-protests as well.
@Yuri, Vlasov was a hero anyway, and showed true courage and genius in operation typhoon; i hope that he will be rehabilitated in the near future.

George Soros isn't welcome in many places. Hahahahahaha. UK should be pissed at that guy. He swindled the Pound pretty good.

    @Babur
Yeah I was wondering if there was anything specific to address because there is alot to be said about protesters in Russia and people's ideas about how things are to be run. What do these protests say about freedom of speech in Russia?

Organizers said 20,000 protestors attended, police say 8,000. Let's give the protestors the benefit of the doubt and go with 15,000. Moscow has a population of ~11.7 million. 15k/11.7 million = ~0.13%.

Let's put this into perspective: Recently, Montreal had ~200,000 protestors take to the streets. Montreal has a population ~1.6 million. 200,000k/1.6 million = ~13%. And these protestors were mainly just students protesting tuition increases.

But you haven't seen the Montreal protests splattered all over BBC's front page, now have you? No, because "OMG everybody hates Putin! Whatever shall we do!? Democracy is in danger! Quick, jump on the anti-Putin bandwagon because it feels good!"

Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus. [A] necessary degree of fear, [...] frontier incidents and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention. The CIA and SIS should use [...] capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension. [Funding should be provided for a] Free Syria Committee [and arms should be supplied to] political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.
