I read in the news today that some new provinces are being formed in (western?) Pakistan. What does this mean for politics in those areas?

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly has unanimously approved resolutions in favour of reinstating Bahawalpur province and the formation of a separate province in southern Punjab, DawnNews reported.

Both resolutions were tabled by Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Punjab Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rana Sanaullah during Wednesday’s session of the provincial assembly, which started with a delay of over two hours.

The session, which was presided over by speaker Rana Mohammad Iqbal, kicked off as new assembly members — the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Usman Bhatti, and the PML-N’s returned candidate on a reserved seat for women, Shumaila Rana — took their oaths.

However, Ms Rana’s oath-taking was followed by shouts of “Shame! Shame!” from PPP lawmakers, matched by chants of “Go Zardari Go!” and “Go Gilani Go!” by PML-N legislators, seemingly turning the House into a fish-market as the war of slogans ensued.

PML-N member Shumaila Rana was forced to resign in August 2009 after allegations of misuse of credit cards against her. Ms Rana was arrested for allegedly stealing two credit cards of a fellow lawmaker and then going on a shopping spree.

However, the allegations were later found to be baseless. Ms Rana had won a seat reserved for women in the provincial assembly on a PML-N ticket in 2008.

The Election Commission had declared her a returned candidate earlier last month after receiving a fresh priority list from the PML-N.

Wednesday’s session was subsequently adjourned by the speaker for an indefinite period.
I have not read any analysis over this, too early, but from what I think, an attempt by PML-N to remain in power by gaining more votes , and because it got through with the PPP, they obviously think THEY can win votes by cutting Punjab down to size , neither of these parties gave a flying about the area for the past four years .

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled Speaker National Assembly Fehmida Mirza’s ruling as void and declared that Yousuf Raza Gilani stood disqualified since April 26, DawnNews reported.

The Supreme Court announced the move after convicting Gilani on April 26 of contempt for refusing to ask Switzerland to reopen a multi-million-dollar corruption investigation into President Asif Ali Zardari.

“Yousuf Raza Gilani has become disqualified from being member of the parliament,” said Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, reading the order.

“He has also ceased to be the prime minister of Pakistan with effect from the same date (April 26) and office of the prime minister shall be deemed to be vacant accordingly.

“The Election Commission is required to issue notification of disqualification… The president is required to take necessary steps under the constitution to ensure continuation of democratic process through parliamentary system of government in the country,” he added.

A three-member bench, comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard a set of constitutional petitions challenging National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza’s ruling over the reference against Yousuf Raza Gilani.

The bench had been hearing a set of petitions filed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), Azhar Chaudhry advocate and others challenging the speaker’s ruling of May 24 over the qualification issue.
Nationwide celebrations . Well, at least until the next retard becomes PM .

I am a bit late but the whole fiasco which led to the removal of Gilani, is now starting again, have no idea whether Raja will write the letter or not .

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave the government until Sept 25 to draft the letter to Swiss authorities to reopen a graft case against President Asif Ali Zardari and adjourned the hearing in the show-cause notice for contempt of court against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to the said date, DawnNews reported.

A five-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, heard the show-cause notice for contempt of court against Prime Minister Ashraf over the NRO implementation case.

Earlier, a Supreme Court bench had issued a show-cause notice to Prime Minister Ashraf for not implementing its orders in the NRO case of writing the letter to reopen a graft case worth $60 million against President Zardari.
