431 BC: Archidamus Raids Attica
With the Peloponnesian War in its opening stages, Archidamus II of Sparta has decided to make his first forays into Athenian territory. Taking his superior (in both training and number) ground forces, Archidamus and the Spartans burned farmland across Attica, just outside of Athens' long walls, behind which many farmers, simple freemen and aristocrats alike, have fled. Athens has chosen to make no moves against Archidamus for the time being, relying on her superior navy instead. After all, the Spartans can only maintain a light hold on Attica (occupying the region only three weeks at a time) for now, due to the necessity of keeping Sparta itself safe from revolts by Helot slaves. While the raids have led to the destruction of much fertile farmland outside of the city, Athens herself remains relatively unaffected due to Sparta's inability to cut off supplies from sea routes.
