Jane Goodall's research demonstrated decades ago that chimps engaged in murder and even cannibalism.

This study is more about exploring whether the murders are a result of survival of the fittest type instincts or due to effects of habitat destruction and resource limitation caused by humans.

I don't remember the title but there is a Jane Goodall video showing a mother and daughter team killing off the newborns of other mothers in the groups to eat them. Aside from that, Chimps have always been insanely agressive. If chimps encounter another chimp that does not belong to their group, they will kill it.

There was a documentary on this. It was fascinating. At first they thought the pair was defending territory but then they realized that the pair was actually stalking their prey and the murders had nothing to do with territory. If I remember correctly, the mother chimp began her behavior after losing her own infant. The researchers compared the mother chimp to a serial killer.
