Default NVidia driver "Direct3d is not compatible" problem. Desperate for help?

I just assembled a new rig for gaming. I installed everything, I installed the latest nVidia driver. I launch a game on steam.. It crashes to desktop saying "Direct3d is not compatible with this card" or something like that. The thing is, I know it IS compatible.

So I'm thinking maybe there's something i'm missing? I would be grateful for any solutions. I've rolled it back to an older driver, and the older games work. When I try to launch Skyrim however, it doesn't even launch.

This is so frustrating it's unbelievable...
    Specs:
    Intel i5 2500k 3.3 ghz processor
nVidia GTX 560 Ti 1 GB graphics card
    6 GB DDR3 RAM
    Asrock z77 Extreme 4 motherboard.
    Windows 7 64 bit

Once again, I DO have the latest graphics driver.

Edit: I've found a stable nVidia driver that doesn't give me the original problem, though Skyrim still isn't launching every other game is working.

    two things i'd try:

    reinstall DirectX
reinstall graphics driver (and make sure you get the correct version for your OS, 32 or 64)

I've done the graphics driver, and yes I made sure I got the right one. Guess i'll try reinstalling DirectX, how does one reinstall directx btw?

For now i've gone back to an older driver that lets me play older games (than skyrim) without the direct3d .

exactly which games is it letting you play? because Direct3D is the graphics API of DirectX. you'd have to be playing OpenGL-based games or something else to be able to play without Direct3D or DirectX.

    try this http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

also try using Windows Update to install available service pack(s).

there are a couple of problems i spotted in your DxDiag:

    under your graphics card:

    DDI Version: unknown
    Video Accel:
    Deinterlace Caps: n/a
    D3D9 Overlay: n/a
    DXVA-HD: n/a
    DDraw Status: Not Available
    D3D Status: Not Available
    AGP Status: Not Available

that should not be like that.
it seems like your card isn't taking to DirectX, or vice versa.

could be a faulty Windows installation. try what i suggested above.

It'll do it itself unless you specify otherwise.

I updated to service pack 1, and i'm installing the thing you listed. Weird thing is, that when I put my driver back to an older version I CAN play games (Skyrim still won't launch but I think that's a Steam or Skyrim problem maybe, because it doesn't launch after I press play and the computer freezes up). I'm able to play FEAR 2 and Mount and blade: warband, Operation flashpoint: red river also Oblivion on nVidia driver 280.26

Also: i've activated Windows. If there's a problem with windows, should I try repairing the system with the windows disc??

which driver is the one giving you the Direct3D error?

    have you tried beta 301.24?

also, try the solutions found here

The two latest drivers display the error, and you know what's funny? I've just run dxdiag again and it shows D3D is available... Must be that my current driver allows it or something.

Edit: I just found a nVidia update on my windows update program. Going to download and install to see what happens.

Download DirectX 9 itself, not just the newest DirectX. A lot of time going to DirectX's website and clicking "download" doesn't have the old DX9 libraries in it, and they need to be manually installed.

Why download dx 9? It seems to be working when I play Mount and blade: warband

Install all software options in Windows Update and it will take care of many of your problems. It will take more than one pass, though. This includes dx9, and all the .Net updates you'll need.

There's DX9a DX9b and DX9c. You could have one of the first two. Warband uses DX9a iirc.

as others have said need legit copy of windows and license registered and then do all the microsoft updates.

then when you try and run skyrim for the first time after downloading it should update dx via steam. (if it needs 2).

I have a legit copy of Windows, my brother didn't need his anymore because he bought a Mac book .

I tried installing the graphics driver Windows suggested and it screwed up my screen resolution so I rolled back to the nVidia driver that works with the games.
Windows update doesn't seem to be suggesting anything else but the nvidia graphics card update released in February 2012.. I installed all the .net updates.

    Should I dl this?

    Might give this a try...

I'd use the drivers from Nvidia.

Personal experiences of Windows hardware drivers I leave alone and search for the updates in their respective sites whether AMD, Nvidia, RealTek, name it.
