    Default Ideal Soundtrack

This will seem an odd reason for a first post but I've been keeping an eye on this mod for some months. It promises (when complete) to be just about my favorite thing to come from the TW franchise, given my particular historical predilections.

A band that I think would suit the subject matter perfectly is one from Bulgaria named Irfan. They dwell at the musical intersection of Europe and the Middle East and there are lots of religious overtones, not to mention a distinctly "ancient" sound. For example, and I apologize if there's a better way to provide a link:

    Potential battle music
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esEA99-Ouiw

    Potential mobilize
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrkOprvcNyE

    Good for campaign map
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcdSZHmJkBQ
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-75WXMzWRCA

I'm not sure what obligations a third-party, not-for-profit modding team would have as far as obtaining clearance, but my notion is that they would be glad for the exposure.

If this thread isn't redundant, it would be a good place for others to air their suggestions...

    Many thanks...

The problem is if we really can use this music. Do we need permission or sth?

It seems like there are no official avenues to get in touch with the band themselves, however here is the page for their label:
    http://www.prikosnovenie.com/inde.shtml
And navigate to "about us" to find contact info.

That is, if you want to err on the side of caution. Once again my sense is that, because you will not profit from the distribution, then no laws are being broken. Do other mods not have custom soundtracks?

And though others should of course come forward with suggestions, I can't resist putting this out there as well.

    ----------------

Miraculously, music actually survives from the time period in question, namely the apex of Rome (that is to say New Rome) as a Mediterranean-straddling Christian power. It is liturgical music, termed 'Old Roman Chant' and a certain Frenchman Marcel Peres has made a career of reviving it, with his group Ensemble Organum. I will proceed now to spam you with good examples:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHm_JMbyfdU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kdka1...2&feature=plcp
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay-vG...4&feature=plcp
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDJtB...2&feature=plcp
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ych_...3&feature=plcp

Not all of these can be smoothly integrated to a game context, but I can easily imagine them as menu, campaign map or pre-battle music. Certainly because this treasure exists it would be a shame to omit it.

    Peres' website, for contact purposes:

Thanks for the response, I'm glad of your interest and willingness to consider.

As for "epic" I'm not sure what else to suggest without straying into the realm of the hokey, or of... soundtracks for something else. I recall downloading mods for other games that use music from movies and, if it comes to that, Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" and certain others may be suitable. Sadly there are none about the reign of Heraclius...

I can think of one other band that, like Irfan, makes original compositions with an ancient sound that can get the blood pumping. They're much better known, and I don't doubt that some posters here have heard of Dead Can Dance:
    http://deadcandance.com/

    Their game-friendly songs might include:

    for battles
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNxa0odpCJU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm3TX6eYryU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUCNAYat2qU

    for victory?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcmpBCXOgVI

    for defeat
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXw8_dlp5Gc

    pre-battle (i.e. deployment)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SPaxspxXDw

and for good measure, some Persian music (for the Sassies)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgOIhVgOp88

and for now that's all I've got! As it seems development will continue some time I'm liable to come up with something else eventually. Keep up the good work.

    Apologies for thread-o-mancy.

    An exciting discovery:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuKF...9F3CC&index=13
A vast body of Byzantine secular music that I didn't know had been preserved. Watching this one clip will take you down a veritable rabbit-hole. Enjoy!

    Additionally, Cappella Romana
    http://www.cappellaromana.org/
a vocal ensemble dedicated to the "Three Romes" (Rome, Constantinople, Moscow) whose material relating to the first two is quite promising.

A possible source of Northern barbarian / pagan music:
    Hedningarna (and related neo-folk acts)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAG-FkDqdb0
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l8rLicmdzU

If Huns get involved, you might want to incorporate some throat-singing too.

I can't wait to play this mod
If you research good music, let me introduce you to Lisa Gerrard !! You sure know her since she is the singer of the famouse gladiator music.
You should totally consider her other music as being good choice for this mod (i hope (: )

Fantastic soundtrack but i do not know if we can use it...
The Triarii music is used in Call of Warhammer so go on it should be fine

I have some more music that i want to suggest.
About permissions I personally would just ignore them if u are allowed to use itor not, Call of Warhammer, Third age total war, etcetc, i cant imagine everyone has permission for everything.

There's are great suggestions here. I particularly support the use of historically accurate music in this mod where possible.

That one is sung in some Slavic language, though. Serbian, I think. It is not in Greek.
