Yes (to Infanta Blanca of Spain (Carlist tradition)) Quick desc.: Kind, pious, charitable and a loving family man - but weak-willed, gullible to the right people, and easily manipulated by his advisers, nobles and clergy. Also rather soft and unwilling to execute extreme measures, even if only to preserve his own position, usually leaving such tasks to his subordinates. Not particularly interested in politics, and thus largely leaves that up to his Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Previously a repressive and corrupt but relatively efficient administrator who destroyed the bandits plaguing Mexico's roads, revitalized Mexican infrastructure and opened the country up to foreign investment, he is now growing increasingly senile, with predictable effects for Mexico as his less scrupulous underlings begin to take advantage of his deteriorating mental health to indulge in general corruption.

Victoriano Huerta, Field Marshal of the Imperial Mexican Army, Count of Colotlán

Age: 50 (born 1850) Married? Yes (to Emilia Aguila) Quick desc.: A ruthless and bloodthirsty general and 'parvenu' noble (born a commoner, rose through the ranks) with a sadistic streak a mile wide despite his soft-spoken, clean and sharply dressed outward appearance. Known for his practice of publicly flaying bandits and rebels alive. Highly ambitious, opportunistic and a likely successor to Porfirio Diaz, with the support of the military and the lesser aristocracy. Nicknamed 'the Jackal' (el Chacal) by the Mexican people.

A German emissary arrives for the Emperor.

The German envoy is shown into the study of Emperor Carlos. The Emperor himself is sharply dressed in a shiny black suit, the cutting edge of 'plain' fashion.

"Welcome to Mexico, my good man! How are you today?"

[Dave Strider]

The Diplomat bows.

"An honor, your excellency. We would like to propose a trade agreement between our two nations."

"Bueno! My subjects will most appreciate the traditionally well-made German goods, from Bavarian ale to Prussian steel, flowing into our markets - and, I'm sure, your companies will appreciate the lucrative opportunity to further invest into our country. I agree fully to this trade deal." Emperor Carlos snaps his fingers, and a servant hurriedly brings him a sheet of paper with the details of the trade agreement etched on it, allowing German companies further low-cost opportunities to invest in Mexico in exchange for a greater influx of German goods into the country. He promptly affixes his signature to the paper.

[Dave Strider]

The German diplomat also signs. Rolling up the parchment, he bows once more to the Emperor, "Thank you, Excellency. You have done Germany a wonderous favor, and we look forward to many future deals."

[The Stig]

A Italian diplomat arrives in Mexico City.

The Japanese Ambassador to the Mexican Empire sends a telegram requesting a meeting with a governmental offical or a member of the Imperial Family of Mexico.

The Italian is shown into the office of Porfirio Diaz, the ancient Prime Minister of Mexico. The old man, seemingly asleep only seconds ago, stirs in his chair while grumbling about having his siesta interrupted, but when he finally fully opens his eyes his tone is sharp, and not an ounce of his supposed senility can be seen in the lines of his weathered face.

"Yes? You are the Italian ambassador of whose presence I was informed this morning, correct? How can I help you today?"

[The Stig]

"Yes, that would be me, Sr. Diaz. My king has sent me to establish trade relations and an alliance between our two nations. The Italian and Mexican people are brothers in faith, language, and style of government. Let us be brothers in arms and commerce as well."

[Barry Goldwater]

"One minute." Diaz pulled a telegram from Lascurain, over in London, free and quickly looked it over, then slammed it to the table. "It is agreed, then. We are prepared to open up Mexico to investment by Italian companies with only the barest limitations and start-up taxes. In exchange, we require armored cars, particularly from quality manufacturers such as Fiat, at below-market prices and on demand."

"Of course. Whatever you would require, we are happy to provide."

[Barry Goldwater]

Diaz quickly affixes his signature to an agreement procured by one of his aides, and presents it to the Italian. "There, done. It was a pleasure doing business with you. Now, have you anything else to say? I heard something about an alliance?..."

[The Stig]

"Indeed. We feel it is in the best interests of Italy and Mexico to sign a common defensive agreement."

[Barry Goldwater]

"But what would be the purpose of such an alliance?" Diaz cocked an eyebrow. "We are separated by an ocean, the Straits of Gibraltar, and the Mediterranean. Should either of us come under attack, the other cannot conceivably help us in time - whether for victory or defeat."

[The Stig]

"Ah, but I disagree. Firstly, it would give even greater incentive for Italian businessmen to invest in Mexico, knowing that their assets will be secure. Secondly, it would give pause to any European or American nation planning to attack Mexico, knowing that it has strong allies in Europe that will come to its aid. The mere existence of such an alliance would serve to reinforce your position."
