Nope, much earlier.
American Civil War?
She was ordered during the ACW...
No, same class of ship though, that being an Ironclad Ram.
No one? Okay, it is European... it was laid down during the ACW. It fought a battle after the ACW.
Affondatore (eng: sinker), a British built Italian ironclad ram built in 1863, she was modernised in the 1890's, and served until 1907. She was part of the Italians keeping up with the Jones' campaign. She was a flagship and fought against the Austrians.
Looks like I've gone up a rep title thing,
Royale with cheese!
Yes, but do you know why they call it that?
Anyway ... some kind of armour or hull piercing type-thingummyjig?
Sorry, done it now.
SMS Emden (the first one, in the photo) is unique in being the only surface ship in history to receive the Iron Cross, it was awarded to her by Kaiser Wilhelm II in recognition of her service in the Indian Ocean in 1914, where she sank over 70,000 tons of merchant shipping before running herself aground when cornered by the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney.
As well as the Iron Cross bestowed on the Emden, her officers and 50 crew members were awarded First and Second Class Iron Crosses, and all subsequent ships of the same name carry a symbol of the award. Also, the German government gave the surviving members of her crew the right to append "-Emden" to their surnames. There are many people in Germany with this name now, descendants of the original crew.

Because of the metric system!
It's not an armour piercing weapon. Gotta think outside of the box with this one.
Forget the box, it's that out there.
Maybe the spike is for sticking in the ground. I can't tell if the tube is hollow or not... I was thinking some kind of launcher but that's not really outside the box.

Its what it launches at what that's outside the box.
Odd one! If it launches some kind of projectile from the ground then it looks as if it has no means of being aimed - just straight upwards. I keep thinking of those rockets that the Chinese used to disperse rainclouds when they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Republic or something.
Pretty sure it wouldn't be that though. I'll sleep on it

Is it something to do with the weather then? Rockets to create or disperse fog perhaps?

It launches *something* into the air but not rockets. Has nothing to do with weather or fog. The *something* is the least likely ordnance to be launched into the air.
