Fictional worlds of the Battlestar Galactic franchise. They are the principal centres of human civilisation. Their name, Kobol, is named after the alleged birthplace of humanity.

A city state of Ancient Greece that was very militaristic, its entire society based around training and maintaining arguably the best trained soldiers in Greece, or even the entire ancient world. Sparta was famous for fighting the Persian King Xerxes at the first battle of Thermopylae, and then against Athens in the Peloponnesian Wars. It was one of the few city states that remained independent of Macedon following it's conquests of Greece under Phillip II and Alexander.

At first Tibet was a collection of tribes on the plateau, and their sole interaction with the world being to raid the Silk Road and the connection of their vast, civilized and overwhelmingly powerful eastern neighbour, the Chinese Empire, to their western territories. These raids could not be stopped effeciently, and Tibetans began to gain a reputation as raiders along the whole Chinese world.

After that, Buddhism entered Tibet from India, they started their own civilization and that is where the real Tibetan history begins. The raids began to cease, but they took a lot of territory from the Chinese after the collapse of the glorious Han Dynasty. Tibet flourished, while China was not to be properly united for almost 2-3 centuries.

After that, China was reunified, and the monstrously powerful Tang Dynasty reconquered almost all of the western provinces in the west. Tibetans and their Dalai Lama were reduced to tributary states, though not official vassals. Tang dynasty asserted heavy influence on them just like all their neighbours, and Tibetans started the woodblock printing presses and their current architecture dates from that time. But Tang China had lost a large number of territory to the quasi-Tibetan ally, the kingdom of Nanazhao. This weakness would remain until the glorious Tang Dynasty collapsed.

Tibetans had trade relations with the Uighurs and some parts of Hsi Xia tribes that were trying to migrate into China. The Chinese Empire was broken and 60 years of chaos ensued, while Tibetans took what is now Sichuan and Yunnan and formed a truly threatening empire. China was reunited under the Song Dynasty, which was not militarily powerful but in terms of technology and economy it was a giant.

Song Dynasty began to collapse after being defeated by the Jurchen tribes from the north (who created their own dynasty in China, the Jin dynasty). They remained as a state but they collapsed completely under the Mongol Invasion of China. Mongols conquered Tibet alongside Korea, and reduced the Dalai Lama to little more than ceremonial figurehead, and this was the first time whole of Tibet had been conquered by foreigners (alongside China itself).

The Mongols were driven out of China by massive rebellions which succeeded, and the Ming Dynasty (another golden age) was founded. Ming Dynasty reduced Tibet to a puppet tributary state, and Tibetan raids had completely ceased by then. A Ming Resident lived in Lhasa and acted as an advisor to Dalai Lama on behalf of the Chinese Emepror, but in reality he was there as a warning that they should remain loyal to the Chinese.

Ming Dynasty, after almost three centuries of glorious rule and prosperity, was beginning to collapse. Tibetans kept their nominal independence, but China was in turmoil. The Chinese Emperor was dead, the empire was beset by peasant rebellions and Jurchens (now renamed to Manchus) were invading from north (with the excuse of 'avenging' the dead Chinese Emperor). The Manchu armies conquered all of northern China, and then moved into southern China, completing the conquest of the Chinese Empire and founded the last Imperial Dynasty of China, the Qing Dynasty. They also reduced Tibet to a puppet state, and Tibet was essentially nothing more than a province of the Chinese Empire.

Tibet was only nominally independent from China by this time, and even day-to-day administration of Tibet was actually in the hands of Chinese administrators and the Qing Resident who kept a check on native Tibetans. Qing Dynasty ruled for almost three centuries, repairing the Chinese economy after the chaos of Ming collapse and ensuing another period of peace and prosperity, at the same time expanding China to it's greatest borders. But by mid-19th century they too were beginning to crumble. Greedy Europeans invaded and the technologically inferior Qing lost. Tibet clamoured for full independence. British invaded Kashmir and Tawang (known as Arunanchal Pradesh in India) as a part of British India, and Tibet signed a separate peace treaty with the British handing over these lands. This greatly angered the Chinese, because Tibet (and all it's lands) were considered parts of China. At the same time, borders of Chinese Empire shrunk as Russians took large parts of northern China which they still hold to this date.

Qing Dynasty collapsed in 1912, and chaos ensued. China had no experience in democracy and republicanism, and central government collapsed as China was overrun with warlords. This became advantageous to Tibet, they now had full independence and Dalai Lama was absolute ruler. Mongolia and Xinjiang broke away too. Chaos continued in China, with the last Chinese Emperor reduced to a fraction of territory in the far north and only saved by the Japanese who invaded China.

Tibet kept it's independence, until Republic of China in 1949 collapsed after defeat in Chinese Civil War, and was reduced to the island of Taiwan (where it is still situated), by communist rebels. The communist rebels under Mao Zedong founded People's Republic of China, while the original government still continues to rule Taiwan having lost all the mainland.

Tibet continued to remain independent, but the communist Chinese governemnt invaded Tibet and massacred and genocided a whole lot of population. Tibet remains under communist control to this day. Dalai Lama fled and now resides in India. Tibetan government is now in exile.

Mongolia is a landlocked country, dominated by plains/grasslands, squished between the behemoths of Russia and China. It is a relatively poor and low-technological country, though it has numerous mineral resources it could develop and that the world wants. Most Mongolians still live in yurts and use horses for work. Their history consists of building the largest land-based empire during the 1200s C.E., which then split into various khanates, all of which slowly declined. In short, Mongolia is a relatively boring country in my opinion.

A state founded by Frankish tribes (who were actually Germanic) who invaded the collapsing Roman Empire's Gaul region in 5th and 6th centuries. Their empire originally started from a large tribal confederation in northern Gaul, free from a lot of foreign intervention now that Roman Empire was gone. This confederation grew into a kingdom under Merovingians. Under the leadership of Charles Martel, this kingdom became vast and expanded south, and at Tours/Poitiers defeated the biggest threat to Europe and the western world after Roman collapse - invasion of the vast Umayyad Caliphate that stretched from Lisbon to Sindh and controlled almost all of Iberian peninsula. Successors of Charles later founded the Carolingian dynasty and consolidated into an empire all their territories. Then they expanded eastwards and controlled what is today Germany. And finally, they went south into Italy around modern day Spoleto, defeating the Lombards.

Their empire oversaw a new resurgence in many parts, especially the economy that had went totally broke after 476 AD, but it was too short lived and plagued by internal strife. Charlamagne was a great leader, but he proved himself to be yet another false wannabe usurper trying to pretend to be Roman, by having that utterly idiot Pope crown him 'Roman Emperor' when he was nothing but just another barbarian chieftain, and the real Roman Empire was reduced to Greece, parts of Balkans and Anatolia.

Barbarians are barbarians after all. After the death of Charlamagne, his sons fought bitterly over the throne. Eventually, at the treaty of Verdun, the Carolingian Empire was partitioned among his sons. East Francian King tried to again usurp the title of 'Roman Emperor' and the fools pretended to be 'Caesars' and their empire was called 'Holy Roman Empire'. Lotharingia existed for some time until HRE took over them. West Francia and Aquitaine came to be separated into two big kingdoms, until they were reunited after some time, and then turned into the Kingdom of France. Finally, Italy became a separate kingdom (the second one of three total Italian kingdoms in history) until it fragmented into little city states and many parts of it's land was taken over by HRE.

Texas is not a country, but it could be if it chose to leave the United States. And some Texans do want to separate from the Union. It would have a strong enough economy to survive on its own. It has oil and cowboys as well as space centers. If it became a country, it would be a very interesting country indeed.

A kingdom in central Anatolia, founded after Gallic invasions. It was a mix of Celtic, Hellenic and the original Anatolian population. Galatia played a major role in politics of the area, but after two centuries it was reduced to a client state of Roman Republic. Galatia even had a Legionary army of it's own, modelled after Roman Legions. As a client state, it helped Rome in the east. It remained a powerful but loyal client state once Rome turned into an empire, but was later annexed and turned into a province. The Celtic population slowly got assimilated and mixed with local population.

OOC: Warrior Cat my friend, it turns out that Texas was actually a country before being annexed by USA. It was originally a Spanish territory, then it came under Mexico when the colony rebelled against Spain, and then in 1830s Texas itself rebelled from Mexico.

A poor, poor nation in Africa. And recall how a bloodthirsty cannibal tyrant took over the nation and renamed it to 'Central African Empire' when it was not even half close to the size of a proper empire, or had anything like established bureaucracy and provinces and governors. It reverted back to a republic not long afterwards, but it doesn't seem like to be in a good state right now.

The smallest nation in the world, or what remains of the notoriously arrogant Papal States. It lies not far from the tomb of Roman Emperor Hadrian, and has little land outside the palace of the Pope and the courtyard and offices. It doesn't have any military in itself (except Swiss Guards, Pope's bodyguards) although Italian army unofficially protects the Vatican. A good example of how you carve artificial nations out of little city districts.
