Sirius Black joins the website for the sole purpose of playing it.

Sirius Black becomes a LM for the game.

Sirius Black helps co-found another RPG several months later.

Sirius Black joins several content staff branches

    Sirius Black becomes a citizen.

Sirius Black starts participating in the Curia

Forgive me for using my own client as an example, but I think this clearly demonstrates that RPG play does not solely benefit the RPG forum. It attracts new members which benefits the whole site and clearly keeps members around long enough for them to make great and recognizable contributions to the forum as a whole.

I fear we are veering off track here; the proposal is about medals for a competition that has yet to begin, not the Role-Playing community as a whole.

    I stand corrected.

It is about medals for a competition that has yet to prove itself.

I also started off in RPGs and gained skills to contribute elsewhere from there, I think this would have been great motivation for anyone in our situation. And is a good way of saying thank you

I can safely say I wouldn't have stayed if not for YATS. After all, it only takes a few minutes to download a mod. But a YATS speech...now that takes hours

As I said when some earlier iteration of this was initially proposed in the root RPG forum.

The issue is, when you consider it, that the RP community numbers at most 50-60 individuals who are regular, of those there are maybe twenty to thirty that regularly check the base forum and would notice anything like this. And of those any nominations process would be little more than a farcical popularity contest.

It is a good idea, just don't place too much stock in the verdict. This would be for fun, not for "prestige".
The idea has merit but I think I'd rather see at least two rounds of it go ahead smoothly, if only to lend it some degree of credibility.

^ This is a good point.

I am not entirely sold on the comparison to AARs though. However if people want to consider that, MAARC victories are as much a function of the entry pool composition as the quality of the story. AAR medals are better indicators as they require a consistent quality with multiple MAARC top 3 places, BAARC or TotW wins etc and have a quite steep climb from one level to another (6-12-24).

Certainly there are limits to the comparison, but if you were given some specific examples such as this, (I would have been willing to patronize Decado on the spot) would it change your perception at least a little? The RPGs have potential to breed stocatto roleplay or very longwinded posts and battle threads comparable to modest AARs. YATS and GSTK are treasure troves of these longer post styles as they are meant to expand RP. I have to admit I find my own games (BP and TRS) lacking in these 'epic' posts, but once some pvp starts happening I'm sure it will happen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm more like thinking about these as apples and oranges. I'm not an expert of RPGs as I have never participated in one, and there is of course a wide variety of quality and style in AARs. My point was purely technical about the usefulness of some RPG contribution indicator in citizen applications and the incremental point increase for various medals.

I'd like to see this in operation first as well. One point per month for all participants is very low and it'd take an age for a number of people to receive this award. The higher end ones would be very tough. To get the amethyst you'd have to be voted as the best every month for a year and a half, which denies points going to anyone else. Depending on the involvement with the voting and nominations, I think increasing the number of points needed to get to the levels and staggering the points received for first, second and third might be a good idea. As it stands, I can imagine movers and shakers in particular months getting the points while some more consistent members who might also deserve the award would miss out on a month-by-month comparison.

At any rate, I'm with Legio. For giving the competition a couple of runs to see how it goes, of course.

Man, I half expected someone to yell "veto" and then I'd have to go to the rostra and give some sort of inflammatory speech.

    I like GotR's idea of 1st 2nd and 3rd, giving everyone points

Give me medals for HS players (an already established forum\competition) first & then we shall talk about this (which has just begun), until then oppose.

This will get my support (the point system needs some re-thinking, I agree with GotR) - when it is demonstrated that a competition of this kind is operational and functional. Isn't is customary to design and distribute medals AFTER something outstanding has been achieved?

My suggestion: shelve this proposal, hold one or two competitions, present the proposal again and add the supporting material to it. It should have a promotional (and inspiring I would presume) effect as well if the proposed medals are mentioned as a possible reward. I don't think it is a problem to award the medals 'posthumously' once they are sanctioned.

Good point about the point system, I've changed the OP to assign points to 1-3 places and then changed the point values for the awards themselves.

Of course now we all have to annoyingly reaffirm support.
