Default Stopping Steam Updates on Initial Installation

Is there anyway to stop a new install of Shogun from downloading all the updates? I'd rather not have it break for a third time and cause me to download another 25gbs for nothing.

As much as I've enjoyed the TW games over the years this one has been more frustration than fun.

    Impossible. It cannot be done.
A plea to CA: Please give us NON-STEAM OPTIONS such as with GOG.COM`s Alan Wake and Witcher 2, etc. Even allow a system such that Mount and Blade Uses. Many of us will pay extra for a Steam-free version of RTW2.
The use of STEAM-ONLY by CA is ethically wrong because:
    1. It does not need to be forced. It could be optional as other games have proven.
    2. It discriminates between internet users and non-users or those who simply do not want it.
    3. The `advantages` are only advantages in a very small and superficial manner. They do not counter the disadvantages.
    4. It suits the company way more than the user. We are simply told it`s better for us
Finally,I shall not give CA|SEGA my money for RTW2 while it forces Steam on me. They have given us no good reason why it must be so. Basically they don`t care.

Oh good. Well I guess that's it for Shogun. I'm now on my fourth complete download of the files. Once it updates I'll get to play it once then, after saving and exiting, on return the save file will be missing and all the campaign options will be faded out.

Sadly, after this experience, this will be the last game I purchase from CA. I don't have a lot of time to play so when I do I want things to work.

With steam, we have less choice with our games not more. Now, if you already have the main game installed you can avoid new patches by simply not logging into Steam, but once you do a new install, Steam will force everything down your throat. there is no option to install separate patches or not. Before steam you could install a fresh game and choose to have or not to have a patch.

That`s how it is. Perhaps if more people had complained about this in the early days something might`ve been done about it, but since no one cared, we now must live with the consequences of less freedom in gaming. Steam has made people love Apathy.

Interesting... I've only just had this issue occur and I'm quite confounded as to why, though I have my suspicions.

Did the Awesomium process usually crash before your game closed before you experienced this issue?

My problem isn't with Steam. Generally I have no complaints and this.one isn't Valve's fault it's CA's. The new patch broke things.

When you've done these reinstalls, have you deleted your scripts folder?

Yeah I've progressed. First time it broke I deleted scripts then verified the cache. Didn't work so I deleted the entire Shogun 2 folder under the AppData directory then verified, didn't work. So I uninstalled the game, deleted all remnants from the install directory and the AppData directory. Reinstalled and it worked. Played a couple hours, saved, exited. Came back a few days later, PC had been turned off the entire time so nothing changed, broken again. Repeated entire process. Got back today, tried to play, broken. I've now spent 76 hours downloading a game I've played for 40ish.

Never had this problem prior to the FoTS prepatch.

I don't mind steam, but let's not pretend steam does not have problems.

    Anyway, OP:
    How does you game break?
What happens when you try to open your game?

It does. You have to start it as administrator though.
    Tools: MMS 1.3 - PFM 2.4.1 - EditSF 1.0.7

Minor TW Tools: Savegame Autobackup, RandomSeedChanger, Replay Browser, Preference Editor
My mods: Extended Camera - No Handicap on Normal - Add occupation resistance to AI - FotS Defenses Rebalance
If you're artistically inclined, I could do with some icons for my mods and tools....

Hopefully I'll get around to posting vids in my YouTube channel at one time.

The ridiculous thing about Steam updates is that they actually have the option "Do not automatically update this game." BUT each time after you launch the game, Steam resets it to "Always keep this game up to date".

I backup all my Steam games after bigger patches. Fortunately, I have a backup from before the FOTS release.

Well, I'll tell you this: I don't mind Steam as an idea, a platform for games distribution, etc. It's not perfect, It has it's downsides, alright.
But it really pisses me off how CA uses it. Now I have over 30 GB of data in Shogun2 folder, even if I use only half of it. I didn't wanted to buy FOTS, but hey, I downloaded it anyway when I wanted to patch my orginal Shogun game. Same thing with that other expansion. And I can't get rid of it if I want to play Shogun.
Same thing if you buy "standalone" FOTS. You will have to install all other crap as well, but you'll play only one campaign. Who designed this?
It's like buying only suit pants with jacket sewn into pockets. You don't get to wear the jacket, but you have to carry it all around all the same.

Yet most people never have problems or if they do are pretty minor.
