I find them "viable" as well. Consider that you can build the Large Foundry in Rome immediately, and start pumping out 2 red chevrons with silver sword and silver armor Cavalry within a couple turns. Capua has no improvements at start of game and often rebels with the first scripted rebellion, meaning you get units with no experience that have to retrain in Rome... so stat wise they are comparable (other than Armor I'll grant you). Lastly, it might be a personal preference for some, I tend to prefer cavalry with shield/spear combo, after the reforms, Germanic Mercenary Cavalry are a mainstay of my numbered Legions (those in the east will use more archer and cataphract type cavalry when available). Just my 2 cents

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, sed dulcius pro patria vivere, et dulcissimius pro patria bibere. Ergo, bibamus pro salute patriae.

Campanian and Ligurian are superior and just as easily recruitable. Retraining isn't any sort of issue for the good players either.

My penny, I hope it drops.

I use merc cavalry often as well. But I enjoy using auxiliary cavalry just because it gives my legions standard looks.

Hehe - just read the sentence again - RafoutRoud - 0-turn means the speed of recruiting (option in the RSII launcher) and 4 turns a year should explain itself ;-) - its a submod...actually quite self explaining...

I dont think so I have taken all of Greece and Sicily and am now slowly working my way up the Italian Peninsula and unifying my borders against the Dacians. I did most of that with only one army but now that I have a two front war I have raised three more.

    1) Usually 4 for me, 2 Polybian, 2 Allied. Generally I find that provinces such as N.Africa rarely need a full legion, instead I keep major garrisons strong and Generals loyal. For example, Carthage will have quite a strong garrison usually local or allied troops.Whereas Hadrumentum will have a weaker garrison. This way I can respond to Brigands in the general area and crush rebellions where needed! And it keeps the cost down, which is a bonus for me as I horde gold('Tis a problem I know)

I have however had to recently increase the number of troops in Spain, simply because of massive insurrection across the province. Essentially I keep 4 standing 'campaign' legions and rely on allied units for local fighting.

    2) No idea(Sorry!)

    3) I divide the Mediterranean between Sicily and Gadir, this is my Sphere of influence currently, and as a result I keep Naval bases and standing fleets at choke points. On top of that I have a few Biremes detached to ferry troops, and keep up regular naval patrols!

Remember that not many Romans at that time had horses and their early cavalry was quite bad. Maybe Latin cavalry was the best they can recruited back then.
