Have anything to contribute? Thanks, great list. Know half of the movies already, and will watch the other half sometime
Aye, haven't seen any myself, but there are several samurai movies out there about a historical blind samurai named zatoichi. Example: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363226/
Not a bad rating. I very much liked "Love and Honor", which tells the story of a blind samurai as well. Good stuff
EDIT: Oh, and Rashomon, which tells a weird story, by Akira Kurosawa.

You are welcome Darth. Maybe you have something to contribute as well?

Heroes and Villains: Shogun

I'm not a fan of any action movies, so my favourite ones are the annual 47-episode-ish historical TV series on NHK. These TV series are quite long because each one typically covers the entire life of the protagonist from his/her birth to death. A new episode comes out almost every week every year. This year it's Taira no Kiyomori.

Although the audience is mainly the hardcore history fans and Japanese housewives.

How could I forget. Didn't watch the shogun series as a kid since I'm 24 now, but I watched it one year ago, great series with great japanese atmosphere, it feels very authentic. And that's where my nick comes from BTW, since the main character gets the japanese name Anjin-San, which means Honorable Pilot. They couldn't pronounce his Name (Cpt. Blackthorne), so they had to rename him
I don't mean to be a killjoy but.....I think there should be like....standards. I mean....the Richard Chamberlain 'Shogun' series and 'The Last Samurai'......gah....
But I recently saw 'Ichimei', the 2011 remake of Kobayashi's 'Harakira/Seppuku.'
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1728196/
Not as good as the original, sadly. It's a faithful adaptation in terms of the narrative, but the rampant cynicism of the original is....just not there. But still, it's worth a watch.
